FUTURE OF CROP NUTRITION A little history New fertilizers old technology New technology for nitrogen Agrium

First Patent issued by the U.S. government was for the improved production of potash (signed by George Washington)

A LITTLE HISTORY In 1960 s one farmer fed an estimated 25.8 people Today that number is estimated over 155 people In 1964 farmers used 125 pounds of fertilizer/acre In 1982 farmers used 300 pounds of fertilizer/acre In 2007 farmers used 225 pounds of fertilizer/acre We ve improved on the mechanisms (equipment, EEF s, GPS) over the past years - we need to continue to improve on delivering nitrogen when the crop needs it.

New Fertilizers Old Technology Essential nutrients in one granule This has been around for 100 years not new technology Market seems to be coming back to this old technology Mosaic and Yara Helps keep the nutrients needed by the crop in balance Agrium s Rainbow Plant Food has been around for 100 years can formulate grade specific fertilizers we have special grades for tobacco and cotton

Figure 3 from 50 year trends in nitrogen use efficiency of world cropping systems: the relationship between yield and nitrogen input to cropland Luis Lassaletta et al 2014 Environ. Res. Lett doi: / /9/10/105011

EEF S FOR NITROGEN 3 modes of action: Inhibitors or stabilizers reduce loss by slowing the conversion of N to forms that can be lost protection time of days to weeks Uncoated, slowly available compounds complex compounds that require some kind of decomposition protection time of weeks to months Coated, water soluble fertilizers sulfur coated and polymer coated sulfur coated needs mainly microbial activity to release N protection time is determined by thickness and environmental conditions polymer coating allows diffusion thru the coating protection time is determined by thickness and soil temperature for ESN it s 2-3 months of protection

TOP 5 FINALISTS FOR TULANE NITROGEN REDUCTION AWARD ADAPT-N: company that is developing a cloud-based computer modeling program to optimize the delivery of fertilizer onto cropland by farmers. The Adapt-N tool uses computer models and biophysical data to simulate field conditions and provide farmers with the optimum rate of nitrogen delivery. AgDNA: company based in Brisbane, Australia, has developed a similar system using GPS and internet connectivity to provide real-time sensor data to farmers, giving them the ability to monitor and adapt their nitrogen management practices throughout the growing season on a site specific basis. Cropsmith: company based in Farmer City, IL, is developing a microbiology-based soil testing system that will help farmers better identify the amount of nitrogen already in their soils, and how much more they need to maximize crop yields while limiting nutrient runoff. Pivot Bio: a Berkeley, CA based firm, is using microbial technology designer microbes to help the plants create more of their own nitrogen per acre, reducing the amount and cost of synthetic nitrogen used. Stable N: developed by Hubele-Tomm Farm LLC in Carmi, IL, uses electric impulses delivered to the soil by existing fertilizer applicators to decrease the leaching of nitrates from fertilizer from the soil. Electrical charges are introduced to the narrow band of the soil where fertilizer in the root zone of the row crop until its consumed by the plants.

MICROBE-BASED TECHNOLOGY and N-FIXATION Monsanto and Novozymes collaborated to form BioAg Alliance BioAg has a dozen microbe-based products on the market that include fungicides, insecticides, and bugs that liberate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from the soil, making them soluble. Biological nitrogen fixation in non-legume plants being done in England. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of biological nitrogen fixation in legumes and transferring that to non-legume plants.

NANOTECHNOLOGY Carlos Montreal, researcher with Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada and adjunct professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON, CA Nanotechnology is being used to insure nitrogen is released from the fertilizer only as the crop needs it. This smart fertilizer will save farmers money while reducing water pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. First coined in early 1980 s ability to control individual atoms and molecules was the first working prototype now working on an advanced prototype. 3 ways that nanofertilizers may deliver nutrients: nutrient incapsulated inside nanomaterials or nanosporous materials coated with a thin protective polymer coating delivered as particles or emulsions of nanoscale dimensions Also working on a project to identify which bacteria in the rhizosphere (soil and water zone around the roots) are important for nitrogen mineralization during crop growth. Also looking at how OM stabilizes soil.

AGRIUM LOVELAND Investing in plant health (i.e. plant stimulants, specialty nutrients) and new CPP formulations Over 20 new high-return products and formulations under development Agricen, a Loveland company, using ag biostimulants to enhance nutrition, health, growth, & productivity ECHELON Precision ag platform Invested as a limited partner in Finistere Ventures II ag tech venture fund focused on identifying and investing in world class technologies Expansion of potash mine and ammonia plant PCS merger still ongoing share holders have agreed to merger to form the largest crop nutrient supplier

Product Innovation Strategic Priorities Develop and maintain long term competitive advantage Technology Improvements and Product Development Support ESN Growth (International and North America) Evaluating Emerging/Disruptive Technologies Monitor Competitive Technologies and Products Leverage Synergies within Agrium

ESN (Environmentally Smart Nitrogen) Is an environmentally responsible nitrogen source that increases profitability through lower application costs, increased yields, and increased use efficiency. ESN is the only agricultural-grade controlledrelease nitrogen source. Learn how ESN provides: Extended nitrogen supply to the crop Environmental stewardship through reduced losses by leaching, denitrification, and volatilization. Greater N-use efficiency - produce more crop for every pound of N applied Greater value and increased profits
