32 Growing Seasons Comments 2011: We begin all our Growing Season Summary Comments with the same statement since we opened in 1994, Every Growing Season is Different no matter whether it is a short warm spell, a cold spell, temperature swing, etc. each can have a major impact on yield, disease, plant health, insect population, grain moisture, test weight, and nitrogen availability. I could go on and on about this. The 2011 Growing Season is being referred to as the year of late planting, intense heat and humidity, and a very dry July and August. The year began with a record cold and snowy January. The soil froze very deep requiring frozen hydrants to be repaired. March, April and May presented many challenges to the grower in the form of tillage and drying conditions. Rainfall was normal during these three months but cool, damp, and cloudy days were many, slowing the drying process. Some corn was planted in April some in May but the majority was planted in the first two weeks in June. Soybeans immediately followed. Growing conditions from June to mid July were excellent. From then on a record setting heat spell and no precipitation set in lasting until mid September. Here at the research facility there were many day the interns were sent home at noon because of the danger of heat stroke. Collection of data fell behind. Mid September brought on a sudden change in temperatures as both night and days dropped to record lows in the 40 s to 60 s and eased a lot of the stress on the crops. Yield checks at the time of this writing are average to below average. A late flush of ear worms did cause some yield loss. The hay and vegetable experiments suffered the most. The first clipping of hay was plush and quite tall, good tonnage but the feed net energy was down considerable. The second clipping was well short of normal yield, was stressed and full of aphids. The third cutting will only be clipped to even the stand for next year. No matter how hard we worked on irrigation, the amount applied would not be enough. Vegetables came on very strong when temperatures began to cool. Bell peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, and late sweet corn will be short in yield and quality. A large number of trials have been affected in this area. Turf trials also received a hit in August. It seemed like all we did was mow and collect clippings for data, but toward the end of July we quit mowing for four weeks. The Coffee shop talk we are all familiar with will refer to 2011 as having a cold icy winter, couldn t shut off the rain, then desperate for rain, to unbearably hot and humid, the crops did well for the stress they have been through. Geological History of Research Station:

33 Arise Research and Discovery, Inc. is located in Clark County in East Central Illinois. Geologically, the research station acreage is located at the southern edge of the Wisconsin glaciation and extends into the Shelbyville moraine at the north edge of the Illinois glaciation. Glacial spurs are visible on the station. The north side of the farm was formed under prairie grass vegetation that followed the Wisconsin period of glaciation. It has dark colored soils consisting of Piasa types, which are similar to the Drummer soils to the north. These soils have a high water table, and are tiled and surface drained. The balance of the station runs into transitional soils between prairie timber and straight timber soils. The soil series classification is Cowden. Soil texture is silty clay loam with varying degrees of sand. All of the station is under intense conservation management with tile and surface drains. Windblown material, loess, is mapped into the 3 to 5 foot zone, but glacial till can be found most places on the station at the 36 to 42 inch level. A small lake with an adjoining sediment retention pond is located in the northwestern part of the station s acreage. Bordered by the established wildlife habitat of a neighboring hunting preserve, the lake is utilized for irrigation, fishing and wildlife support. Trial Summary Comments The use of beneficial soil microbes accompanied by liquid humates is increasing in acreage every year. New stacked genetics have brought about the term genetic expression, meaning yield efficacy through a catalytic fertility program. The catalytic fertility programs are designed and formulated to aid in the favorable genetic expression of the plant. SumaGrow is a synergistic group of microbes with a broad spectrum efficacy to enhance plant growth and development. SumaGrow is very flexible in both organic and inorganic agriculture. This product is multi tasked by its capabilities to increase food production, remediation of the soil and water and promotes health and well being. To identify some of its remediation capabilities, Bio Soil Enhancers of Hattiesburg, Mississippi has began an intensive investigation into soil nitrate reduction by auditing nitrogen from the start of the growing season until the end of the growing season. An Evaluation for SumGrow on Nitrate Leaching in Field Corn, is a multiple discipline study. This is year 1 of a 5 year study. The disciplines of rate structures and timing of applications are examined. is applied at two rates to statistically analyze variances. The validations for this experiment are as follows: 1. Grain yield, grain moisture, gain test weight, and gross $ value 2. Germination and Stand Counts at designated timings 3. Water volume, water nitrate harvesting at designated timings 4. Tissue Test at designated timing 5. Leaf Chlorophyll 6. Sugar Brix at Designated Timing 7. Formazon Soil Test 8. Soil Nitrate Testing at Designated Timing 9. Bulk Density Testing at designated intervals 10. Crop Health Ratings 11. Root Mass 12. Fall Nitrate Test 13. Ear Length and Rounds 14. Ear protein.

34 Being the first year of this study, what is reported can only is an interim report and not conclusive, however there are a number of validates that indicate direction. The bulk density decreased as the growing season progressed. This movement was consistent and gives indication of the soil microbial activity being favorable. Properties such as this promote soil and plant health. The growing season was short due to the time of planting and protocol initiation. Normally this decreases a plant tolerance to insects and disease. The end result is the death of the plant creating further problems with the rotten plant residue. The plants populations with SumaGrow did decrease but not to the magnitude of the control plot. Leaf chlorophyll analysis was conducted at V 6, V T and R2 stages of growth. The chlorophyll levels increased at each stage of growth with SumaGrow. Further evidence was the ability to see the change in green color at V T. This indicates the plant is conducting photosynthesis in a manner conducive to high yields. Soil Nitrates were collected at V T down to the 12 inch level. This is as deep as we could take them due to the rigidity of the soil due to dry weather. Iowa State University states a level of 15 PPM of nitrates can produce a good crop. Color differences were still noted at this stage of growth. Plant health ratings were conducted at three stages of growth, V 6, V T and R 5. Significant differences were noted in favor of SumaGrow over the control during the growing season. The differences were more prominent as the growing season progressed. SumaGrow had wider leaf diameters, bigger stalks etc. Stalk nitrates is a puzzling measure. Definition ratings have wide ranges for interpretation. Soil types, soil water all play a roll in this. The readings are extremely low in all plots but the tissue test for nitrates is above normal. It is too early in this investigation to explain the reason for the low readings in all plots. All of the plots were hand harvested. The field corn did make maturity or black layer before the first killing frost arrived. SumaGrow plots yields were superior to the grower standard. The ears were longer and two rows more round. Again this is an indication of plant health making the genetics of the plant express the favorable characteristics. Recommendations for 2012 Continue this experiment as it is presently written. The lab data is very supportive to the objectives of this experiment.
