1 Seminar on Yeast Biotechnology: from Fundamental to Industry September 2013 Sirindhorn Science Home, Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Organized by (BIOTEC) National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Rationale and background Yeast biotechnology is gaining much attraction because yeasts are widely used as workhorses for academic research and industrial application for production of a wide range of products, including biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuel, bioactive compounds, enzymes, food and feed supplements. A range of yeast platforms, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Pichia pastoris, Hansenula polymorpha, Kluyveromyces lactis and Yarrowia lipolytica, has been shown to be potential hosts for particular purposes. The efficient systems for heterologous expression and excellent features of yeast cells, such as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, substrate utilization and ease of fermentation regimens, have been recognized. With the advances in recombinant DNA technology, heterologous expressions in such yeast systems have been developed. Yeast-based production processes have been also established to offer economical advantages for industrial uses. In recent years, a wealth of yeast information at omics level leads to a revolution for development and improvement of yeast platforms in terms of cell factories to overcome some drawbacks in biotechnological applications. By combining with the metabolic engineering, bioinformatics and systems biology, the new technologies arisen from the emerging tools have a direct impact on the design of cell factories used by several industries. The main objective of this training course is to illustrate a comprehensive view of advances in yeast biotechnology. This advanced lecture course will cover the following topics; heterologous expression in different yeast systems, fermentation processes and systems biology as well as high-throughput technologies to enhance industrial production of desired products. Objectives To provide current status of yeast biotechnology, including advances in expression systems, fermentation process and systems biology as well as high-throughput technologies, and to facilitate a basis for a collaborative network of researchers, professors and students, who are interested in yeast expression systems and their potential biotechnological applications.
