Hench, Editor Note: The textbook [1] includes a CD that contains 60 hours of illustrated lectures that cover topics in this course as well as self-paced study questions and answers. The textbook and CD module is specially designed for continuing education students that are off-campus or part-time. An additional instructional book is available for supplemental reading for each of the modules. It is listed as [3] Supplementary Readings in Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Healthcare Socio- Economics and Ethics. Course assessment will be based upon the content presented in the lectures, textbooks and supplemental reading material. Overall Objectives To introduce the students to recent developments in materials science and engineering directed to solve problems of survivability of biomaterials and devices in an aging population. The technological advantages and disadvantages, costs, risks, potential benefits and limitations, ethical and other healthcare issues associated with novel, molecularly tailored third generation materials and nano-materials are analyzed and compared with first and second generation biomaterials currently used for prostheses.
2 Specific Instructional Goals 1] Learn methods to analyze survivability, uncertainties and risk assessment of medical devices and compare with patient lifetimes. 2] Develop knowledge of new materials with bioactive properties and mechanisms of bonding and up and down regulation of genes to control cycles, proliferation and differentiation of cells. 3] Establish an understanding of the clinical applications of bioactive materials and their potential benefits and limitations based upon age and medical condition of the patient. 4] Develop knowledge of the effects of composition, size, surface and molecular structure of new nano-sized materials on their biological behavior and potential toxicology. 5] Learn and compare the concepts, processing, advantages and limitations of materials designed for use in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and protein therapeutics. 6] Develop knowledge of types of stem cells available for repair and regeneration of tissues and the effects of materials and scaffolds on control of stem cell proliferation and differentiation. 7] Develop an understanding of bio-photonics methods developed for testing safety, toxicology and efficacy of new biomaterials and nano-materials without use of animal testing. 8] Analyze the potential use of new materials in healthcare with respect to economics and ethical issues compared to present generations of biomaterials and medical devices. 9] Learn to compare the relative efficacy of alternative means of repairing tissues and organs by researching the literature and writing critical reviews. Course Assessment 1] The course is composed of three modules composed of nine hours of lectures per module; there are also four self-paced instructional hours per module using programmed text, CD, supplemental readings and study questions. 2] Three quizzes per module. (5% per quiz; 15 % of grade per module) 3] One Exam per module; (60% of grade per module) 4] One 1000 word essay per module (25% of grade per module) 6] Final Grade is based upon sum of % grade per module divided by 300%. 7] Grade scale: A=85-100, B= 70-84, C=55-69, D= 40-54, E=<39 Essays An essay containing approximately 1,000 words will be required for each module. The content of the essay is to be based upon the subject matter presented in the module. Select a topic of personal interest related to any of the lectures or reading assignments. Discuss the topic from your personal perspective as to why it is important and the scientific, technical, legal or moral issues involved. Include at least 4 recent references published in 2010 or 2011 that address the position you take regarding the topic. Internet references are acceptable but must include details of the site and date of access. Limit any quotes to no more than 40 words per quote. For full marks you must include at least one graphic illustration, figure or table (with citation) that supports the position you take in the essay.
