The session will feature keynote speakers from Evonik Degussa, BP, and Microsoft that you won t want to miss. Keynote Speaker: Kai Dadhe, Evonik Degussa Advanced Process Operation: Experiences and Challenges Increasing energy, raw material and labor costs; the demand for high operational uptime and flexibility; and increased worldwide competition require that chemical manufacturers achieve continuous process improvements. Sophisticated advanced process operation strategies serve as tools to meet these challenges. One key factor for the success of advanced process operation projects is the people working within our chemical plants. In addition, the technical systems need to be of the highest standard to meet upcoming challenges as process- and DCS-related tasks will be increasingly interlinked with plant and enterprise tasks. Open system communication, high security standards and future-proof investments play a major role in the decision-making process. The presentation will focus on our strategy for both operational and technical aspects, and will give examples and best practices of advanced process operation strategies across Evonik Degussa. Keynote Speaker: Malcolm Woodman, BP Modelling and Optimisation in BP Exploration and Production: Case Studies and Learnings This presentation will address the role of modelling and optimisation in BP s field of the future Short-Loop optimisation programme. The focus is on the short-term optimisation of oil and gas production subject to the constraints imposed by hydrocarbon reservoir management and the associated protection of reserves. Reservoir modelling itself is not discussed; rather it is assumed that an effective reservoir depletion strategy has been defined and can be used to set boundaries for the short-term optimisation of production. The primary objective of the presentation is to support the case for the widespread use of mechanistic modelling in support of operational decision making. Past experience in BP, with modelling and optimisation technologies, has shown that there is a huge potential for increased production from the use of models in support of daily operations, once the quality of these models has been assured. We will review the current business drivers for optimisation in BP and summarise some of the historical experience with model-based optimisation in BP s Exploration and Production segment, with a particular focus on the use of Aspen HYSYS. 41

The project also entailed the use of Aspen HYSYS simulation to verify models and determine sources of error in the controller. Lunch 12:00 13:30 ECC1 Interfacing Issues for Implementing DMCplus Controllers Time: 13:30 14:15 Anand Shah and Dr. Pranob Banerjee, ATME AspenTech Middle East (ATME), Kuwait, has been implementing Aspen DMCplus controllers in Middle East GCC countries such as Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. This session summarizes issues related to the systems and interfaces for the Aspen DMCplus projects. To date, ATME has implemented projects on Foxboro, Honeywell and Yokogawa DCSs that are mainly available in the GCC countries. Implementing an Integrated, Real-Time Decision Support System Time: 14:15 15:00 Hennie Jacobs presenting for Pieter Viljoen, BluESP/Sasol Traditional PM&E solutions include system integration, visualization, event management, and performance monitoring but are based on current and historical data. To meet a specific business imperative, Sasol implemented a world-first solution that combines a traditional system with a real-time site-wide model, creating a decision support system that enables the organization to anticipate business-critical events before they occur. The session will discuss Sasol s business imperative, the functionality that the decision support system provides, why AspenTech technology was chosen for the project, and the modeling approach that was followed to deliver to Sasol s specific requirements. This project was nominated for Sasol s corporate project of the year. 45

Recycles, heat integration, and minimum hold-ups are common design features. While such designs provide for optimal steady state operation, they present particular challenges for dynamic control. Steady state simulation based on first principles has underpinned process designs for many years, and only recently has dynamic simulation become a mature, desktop technology. Typical applications of dynamic simulation are relief studies, operator training, testing DCS configurations, development of operating procedures, and more recently, advanced process control applications (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). This session explores the use of dynamic simulation for development and analysis of the basic and model predictive control (MPC) scheme for a propylene/propane (PP) splitter. In Control! Cruise Control at DSM Elastomers Time: 16:00 16:30 Marc Pijpers, DSM Elastomers Jos Schmitz, DSM Elastomers The concepts of semi-automated recipe management and grade transition management have been in operation for a decade at DSM Elastomers. The software used had become obsolete, so the company needed to upgrade the system. The upgrade also created the opportunity to take the next step: Cruise Control, an integrated solution of enhanced recipe and transition management, advanced process control and role-based information management. This session will present an overview of the project. Aspen DMCplus Implementation at LNG Trains 1 & 2 in RasGas Time: 16:30 17:00 Mayan Kumar Shah, RasGas Pranob Banerjee, ATME To maximize benefits from LNG production assets and stabilize the operation, RasGas implemented APC on LNG manufacturing trains. Aspen DMCplus controllers were implemented and subsequently revamped on Trains 1 and 2, and RasGas is now implementing Aspen DMCplus controllers in LNG Trains 3, 4 and 5, and the NGL units associated with Trains 4 and 5. The Aspen DMCplus controllers were implemented in 2003, and then revamped in 2006 to account for process changes. After revamping, the controllers produced substantial benefits. This session will summarize the benefits achieved after revamping the Aspen DMCplus controllers and the challenges in maintaining them to sustain the benefits. 46
