Upcoming UMTRI-AF Conferences November 8, 2017: Inside China: Understanding China s Current and Future Automotive Industry. Our 10 th annual Inside China conference has traced the rapid rise of the Chinese auto industry. The largest automotive market in the world is such a unique market that it demands that we continue to examine both its current and future trends from a variety of perspectives: consumer choice, marketing, product development, government support and regulations, alternative energy, automotive research and development, industry structure, labor, economic impact, and manufacturing. February 14, 2018 New Mobility: Examining the Ways Entrepreneurs and Established Companies Are Changing Our Views on Transportation. Our 4th annual New Mobility conference will evaluate the many different visions of the future of mobility from the perspective of new entrants as well as established players to see where we are headed over the next 10 years.
Upcoming UMTRI-AF Conferences April 18, 2018: TBD July 18, 2018: Powertrain Strategies for the 21 st Century. Our 10th annual Powertrain Strategies conference comes on the heels of the US government s decision to keep or change the fuel economy goals for manufacturers for the 2022 to 2025 timeframe. We will examine the responses by manufacturers, suppliers, and the government in the context of the global powertrain strategies that are playing out particularly in the EU and Asia.

Conference Questions How will connected vehicles create new business models? What different devices will provide data that can be integrated and provide safety and services for consumers? How will Cloud services be able to support the potentially 250 million connected vehicles? What is blockchain and how can it be used within an automotive context?
Conference Questions How long will it take for blockchain to penetrate the automotive value chain? Where will be the first applications of blockchain in the auto industry? Are manufacturers using New Mobility as a platform for changes in their IT strategy? How will manufacturers leverage IT to support connected and autonomous vehicles?
Conference Questions What experiments and testing are in progress for connected vehicles? How is connected vehicle testing linked to new traffic models? What are the current strengths and weaknesses of connected vehicle technologies?
2008 IT as part of the Age of Innovation IT Across the Years Global IT / IT for Emerging Markets Product Lifecycle Management IT as part of global mergers and acquisitions Vehicle to Vehicle and Vehicle to Infrastructure / Connected Vehicles In vehicle consumer services require advances in distributed storage, networking, and middleware
2009 IT Across the Years Companies building internal IT capabilities, identifying process inefficiencies, investing to grow global, and drive global processes and tools Enterprise Resource Planning to manage supply chain and manufacturing Using IT to drive down costs in design and product development Companies still using decades old legacy IT and trying to migrate to IT platforms that allow the integration of best in class IT Open source, integrated mobility using IT Vehicle-based crash avoidance technologies and connected vehicles V2V and V2I
IT Across the Years 2010 Analysis of Japanese use of IT shows much costly customization and weak status of CIOs The introduction and testing of lidar to generate advanced mapping for autonomous vehicles App stores for autos Unification operating model, consisting of globally leveraged processes, data definitions, applications and infrastructure Telematics creating new integration opportunities Collaboration of automakers, suppliers, state and federal government on DSRC System Integration Architecture and Physical Architecture make complexity manageable (PLM)
IT Across the Years 2011 Moving from distributive computing to IT everywhere supported by cloud computing and real time analytics Introduction of mobile apps to vehicles through open source hardware, software, and collaboration with non-auto companies UMTRI s use of naturalistic driving studies that lead to field operational tests that measure V2V and V2I operations Auto companies trying to determine new revenue models from IT-based in-vehicle services Early research into autonomous vehicles focus on reliability The role of IT in how consumers shop for vehicles changes dramatically
IT Across the Years 2012: Auto company IT changes from service providers upon request to prioritizing high impact cross functional needs Linking structured and unstructured data with an integrated customer-centric system that better connects a customer to the manufacturer The success of in-vehicle communication systems based on cloud communications that support APIs, data services, entertainment, vehicle diagnostics, and crash support The vehicle as the 4 th screen (TV, Phone, PC) must be safe, but it also must provide services within the context of driving Human factors research shows the science behind measuring the success or failure of the design of in-vehicle infotainment and safety technologies
IT Across the Years 2013: Big Data Facebook realized early on that insights derived from simple algorithms on more data was better than insights from complex algorithms on smaller sets of data. Big Data use cases based on a navigation system s ability to accurately predict how long one will be Stuck in Traffic Automotive Big Data opportunities are where there is lots of data: sales logs, transaction logs, phone logs and combining them to create new insights UMTRI uses Big Data in the form of datasets of all crashes across the US across many years, vehicle simulations of vehicle dynamics in crashes, and the effects of crashes on a multitude of body types
IT Across the Years 2014: The Internet of Things opens the door for Big Data analysis as well as greater cybersecurity risks Big Data challenges include integrating insights into business processes with existing assets and finding people to support Big Data initiatives Companies moving to in-sourcing IT from outsourcing Enterprise scale requires IT to work across all global locations and across all functions, while also supporting customer engagement in purchasing, diagnostics and repairs.
IT Across the Years 2015: Cybersecurity becomes a top technology initiative within organizations and within vehicles Hackers will go after vehicles if there is a financial motivation, but there may be attacks for fame and targeted paid attacks, followed by organized actions. There is a need for secure hardware, software, and CAN (Controller Aided Network). IT must be aligned with engineering. The introduction of 3-D mapping for autonomous vehicles, yet challenges of adverse weather and interacting with people continue
IT Across the Years 2016: Auto companies are challenged to move outside designing, manufacturing, and selling vehicles into the world of a continual relationship with customers that offers proactive customer care across the customer lifecycle Social media offers a new mode to connect with customers The Internet of Things has reached the plant floor, allowing companies to use Big Data for HR, plant visualization, maintenance, quality, and logistics Autonomous vehicles gather enormous amounts of data that cannot be transferred to data centers wirelessly Machine learning/ai is learning through simulations to improve object detection
IT Across the Years 2016: Platooning and eventually autonomy allows trucking to reduce the need for scarce labor while also reducing fuel costs A new IT-based integrated mobility project in Ann Arbor will optimize transportation and provide on-demand service for first/last mile mobility
