In order to reach this specialized group, an online survey was conducted. In total, 154 high performance computing experts were surveyed. The survey took place in.

3 Plans for the Future 3 Almost half of high performance computing experts report customer demand is what s driving future growth of their firm s high-performance computing needs. One in five HPC experts plan to expand capacity by 1,000 nodes or more in the upcoming months. Performance, not price, is the most important factor when selecting an operating system application. The possibility of using unused desktop cycles as part of a HPC environment is strong with almost half exploring this option. Company size plays a major decision in the likelihood that a HPC expert is exploring using unused desktops. The larger the company, the more likely they are to be open to this idea. A Microsoft HPC solution is in the consideration set for most HPC experts with almost all saying they would consider a Microsoft HPC solution for their next appropriate project.

4 Company Size Influences Many Components of High Performance Computing 4 Microsoft Excel is both the most used and most desired product in an HPC environment. Other products, such as Calypso, Summitt and Xenomorph find few current users but moderate interest in future packaging. The inclusion of algorithmics in an HPC package is much more important to HPC experts employed by companies with 2,500 or more employees. The majority of HPC experts are using the larger 64-bit system as opposed to the 32- bit. This is especially true of employees of larger companies. More than half of those employed by companies with fewer than 2,500 employees are only using a 32-bit system. A centralized or shared utility is the most common way most experts are deploying HPC.
