2 Maritime and Big Data-Linked Data Marine areas cover almost 72% of our planet, yet 95% of this realm remains unexplored! Big data technology and services are expected to grow worldwide at a compound annual growth rate of 40% about seven times that of the ICT market overall. Around 80% of global trade by volume is carried by sea, and around 70% of global trade by value. Developing countries are estimated to have seaborne trade by 90% The overall data market is estimated at already more than 50 billion Euro and will get to 111 billion in 2020 under high-growth conditions. The assessment of the overall economic impacts produced by the adoption of datadriven innovation in the EU (i.e.: Data economy ) is estimated at about 255 billion Euro in 2014, representing a contribution to the EU GDP of approximately 1,8% - a value that could rise to 4,7% in 2020 if highgrowth is confirmed in Europe. 2
