About the Speaker Brad Lawrence - Supervisor Records, Survey & Land Management (GIS & Drafting) ENMAX Power Corporation - Support Services Electrical Field Experience - 13 Years (Power Lineman) GIS Projects Related - 11 years (Data Conversion Coordinator, Y2K GIS Project Manager / GIS Development / Systems Integration / Sustainment and GIS Strategic Planning) GITA - Board of Directors (Alberta Chapter for past 3 years) SAIT - GIS Advisory Council Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Bachelor of Applied GIS Degree program GIS in Electrical Utilities Utilities require a spatially enabled technology infrastructure on which their operational, customer, and decision support systems can leverage the information they have about their existing assets, from all perspectives: Engineering, Operations, Marketing and Finance Utilities need access to their operational information from the office, the field, or anywhere the data is required. - GIS WORLD Magazine Calgary, Alberta Canada
ABOUT ENMAX Municipally Owned Utility (City of Calgary) Serving Calgary for over 95 years Service Territory of approx. 1050sq km Employees Customer Base of 360,000+ Generation (Wind) Transmission, Distribution Contracted for LRT / Streetlight Services 65,000 utility poles / 70,000 STL poles 42,000 Transformers 37 Substations 6,200 km of conductor ENMAX GIS Drivers Consolidation of all mapping records: reduce 65,000+ paper records reduce the backlog of over 6,500 outstanding asbuilt maps (what is an as-built map?) reduce & eliminate discrepancies provide accurate inventory records of all electrical infrastructure and associated assets Provide Asset Management Tools: Analyze assets and inventory Data for establishing maintenance and replacement programs
GIS Background at ENMAX Facility Systems on Mainframe ( ) Transformer Management System was developed and implemented Work Order Management System developed and implemented Computerized Mapping CADD (Computer Aided Drafting Design) is introduced Large Expensive VAX Intergraph Workstations ( shift work is implemented for the drafting group) AM/FM/GIS Development (initiated in 1991) Creation of the FIM Project Facility Information Management Project GIS Background at ENMAX GIS Development was started in 1991 Creation of the FIM Project (Facility Information Management Project) FIM Project had 3 major components: 1. Calsim 2. GIS Environment 3. Data Conversion 1. CalSIM CalSIM Project Calgary Spatial Information Management ENMAX contributed in funding and technical expertise to the City of Calgary Corporate GIS Development Corporate Spatial Data Modeling Committee Benefits from CalSIM Landbase in GIS format Translation Tools GIS User Group Support DAS (Digital Aerial Survey)
DAS - Digital Aerial Survey ORTHOSHOP (Calgary, AB.) ORTHOSHOP (Calgary, AB.) Aerial photographs are taken using a modified plane with specialized camera equipment DAS - Digital Aerial Survey 2. GIS Environment Software Costs - VISION* VISION* GIS Software Purchase and Maintenance Based on GEOVISION Software Development GIS Database Modeling and Schema Software Translation Tools Data Query Tools, Rules base development, etc. Hardware Costs Application and Database Servers (Production and Testing environments) UNIX Workstations
3. Data Conversion ( ) ENMAX Data Conversion Team created Scrubbing & verification of existing records Preparing information and researching discrepancies (excluding Network Downtown & Substation Details) Data Conversion Vendors (Geonex & Byers) Digitized Conversion data into GIS Draw facilities & attach related attribute data Quality Assurance/Quality Control QA/QC of Converted Maps & Database Integrity was of the highest quality meeting at least 98% for acceptance 3. Data Conversion Featured on the Cover of GIS WORLD Magazine (March 1995) Article showcased the successes of the Data Conversion Project with the use of Mobile Pen Computing in field data collection applications Hosted GIS demo s for international delegates: China, France, UK, Brazil, Israel and numerous US based Companies 3. Data Conversion Penbased Computer Technology for field data collection efforts was instrumental in time and cost savings for this effort. ( mhz / DOS based application)
