3 Introduction New and refurbishment waterproofing fast The Alsan RS range of cold-applied liquid resin systems offers costeffective, loadbearing, high-performance, seamless, waterproofing ideal for roofs, general waterproofing, parking decks, balconies, patios, terraces, pedestrian areas, wet rooms and repairing existing roofs. The Alsan RS range uses PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) resin technology. The dramatically fast cure time ensures that the installation can accommodate tight construction schedules. The waterproofing system is extremely flexible and adheres fully to the substrate, creating a homogeneous waterproofing layer, perfectly fitted to the contours of the roof. This means that applications can be warranted for up to 20 years (for details, please contact Flag-Soprema Technical Services). The Alsan systems in principle The basis of all Alsan RS systems is a highly stable UV-resistant PMMA formulation, which is applied to the substrate, if necessary using a primer. It can be reinforced with a polyester fleece and is laid in a number of layers according to the application. Where there is to be pedestrian or vehicular traffic, an Alsan RS 233 self-levelling mortar is added to provide resistance to mechanical stress. Finally, a sealer coat is applied to give an easy-to-clean surface with a range of decorative options. Applications Alsan RS systems are typically used to waterproof: New build roofs, including warm roofs, protected/ inverted roofs, and roofs with top loading, such as pavers, ballast, or timber decking Existing worn-out roof coverings, eg, asphalt or single ply Green roofs (eg, beneath the Flag-Soprema Optigreen system) Flashings and upstands of SBS-modified bitumen roof coverings (eg, Sopralene) and single ply systems (eg, Flagon) Balconies and terraces Parking decks and ramps Surfaces exposed to a wide range of harsh chemicals Roads Internal flooring and wet rooms YOUR ROOFING AND WATERPROOFING PARTNER T:

4 Cold-applied liquid systems with a wide colour range Introduction The Alsan RS product options Primers A primer is required for all substrates, other than those that are completely non-absorbent, such as glass, metal or plastics surfaces. The following primers should be used: Alsan RS 276 for synthetic resin-modified substrates and absorbent substrates, such as concrete, screed and timber. The components of Alsan RS systems Alsan RS systems comprise: Primer resins different types depending on whether the substrate is highly absorbent, asphalt, or other materials such as concrete or timber. The main ones are RS 222 and RS 276 Waterproofing membrane resins of different grades, for main horizontal areas and for vertical upstands and flashings, including low-odour versions, if necessary reinforced with a polyester fleece. The main formulation is RS 230 Wearing surfacing for pedestrian or vehicular traffic includes standard and low-odour self-levelling screeds, as well as base resins for mixing with a powdered filler compound. The most common product is RS 233 Finishing/sealer coats both pigmented and translucent, the most common product is RS 288 Complementary products include surface repair mortars, slip-resistant coatings, curing agents and decorative chips for adding to sealer coats. Alsan RS 222 for asphalt, hot and cold bitumen coatings and tar substrates. Waterproofing membrane resins Two basic formulations are available, one of which is a low-odour option. Within each formulation, there are two different grades, one for horizontal surfaces, the other for vertical surfaces and flashings. All are reinforced during installation with Alsan Fleece. The main membrane resin is: Alsan RS 230 standard formulation for horizontal surfaces Other formulations are: Alsan RS 230 Thix a higher viscosity version of the standard formulation, eg, for upstands Alsan RS 230 TT a version of the standard formulation, which can be applied at temperatures down to -5 C Alsan RS 260 a low-odour formulation for horizontal surfaces mainly for internal use Alsan RS 260 Thix a low-odour version of the higher viscosity formulation Wearing surfacing Where the waterproofing is due to receive pedestrian or vehicular traffic, a wearing surface is required. The main wearing surface product is: Alsan RS 233 Self-levelling Mortar standard wearing surface formulation, consisting of Alsan RS 210 base resin mixed with Alsan RS 223 blended powder filler The low-odour version is: Alsan RS 263 Self-levelling Mortar low-odour wearing surface formulation, consisting of Alsan RS 240 base resin mixed with Alsan RS 223 blended powder filler 4

5 Finishing/sealer coat resins An additional finishing coat is often required to provide a non-slip surface or an aesthetically pleasing decorative surface where slabs or tiles are not added to the final membrane resin coat. The options are as follows: Alsan RS 288 Finish pigmented sealer resin, available in most RAL colours Alsan RS 281 Finish translucent sealer resin Alsan RS 920 Care finish un-pigmented resin with slip-resistant properties for application to smooth sealers Sopracover warranties Flag-Soprema provides a range of comprehensive warranties from 10 to 20 years as standard on all our systems under the name of Sopracover. This insurance-backed warranty covers both product and workmanship, depending on the design life of the system. There is no minimum surface area treated or project value required to qualify for the warranty. Textured coatings provide long-term good grip both on parking areas and access stairs. The application of a self-levelling PMMA-based mortar increases the amount of mechanical stress that the system is able to withstand. Wide colour range ultimate design flexibility Apart from the standard range of colours, almost any RAL colour can be provided with no minimum purchase, subject to the minimum 10kg package size. Also, special formulations (eg, with modified viscosity) can be supplied for specific projects, if required. The finishing coats are UV resistant. Range of guarantees for long-term peace of mind Alsan systems are guaranteed up to 20 years, depending on the number of resin layers used, and are covered by our insurance-backed Sopracover warranty scheme. Certified to ISO ecologically sustainable Flag-Soprema was the first company in its field to obtain ISO certification, as early as January Reinforced systems substrate cracks bridged The PMMA resin technology, in conjunction with a polyester embedded reinforcement fleece, gives the Alsan systems the flexibility to ensure that any cracks in the substrate that might appear in the future will be safely bridged. Resistant to chemicals ideal for car park surfacing The Alsan RS PMMA waterproofing system has outstanding hydrolysis and chemical resistance, making it an ideal surface for car parks, vehicular routes and other locations where there are vehicle emissions or harsh chemicals in the environment. For the installer Low temperature application no delays A special formulation of the Alsan RS waterproofing resin can be applied in temperatures as low as -5 C. Low-odour formulation no unpleasant smells Special low-odour versions are available for use on roofs close to the intake vents of air conditioning units and when used internally. It is also beneficial for building occupants. 6

7 Rapid curing speedy completion There need be only minimal delay (in many cases, no more than 15 mins.) between the application of individual resin layers making it possible for balconies, for example, to be completed from primer to finish in a few hours, ensuring that installation can meet tight construction schedules. Cold-applied benefits for Health and Safety All layers are applied cold so there is no need for bitumen boilers or open-flame torches, with the consequent advantages for Health and Safety. Alsan products contain no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Fully bonded makes a monolithic construction Using an appropriate primer, the PMMA resin adheres to almost any substrate, creating a homogeneous waterproofing layer, perfectly fitted to the contours of the roof. Primers can be used as temporary waterproofing for six months. Liquid application ideal for complex detailing The liquid application process allows simple and effective weathering at drainage channels, roof penetrations and detailing, such as 'I' beams, upstands, pipes, handrail posts etc. It avoids the need for pitch pockets and caulked terminations to seal roof penetrations. For refurbishment Re-roofing on existing cost-effective solution In refurbishment projects, the cost and disruption from the removal and disposal of existing roof coverings can be eliminated, bringing clear financial benefits. 10 Cold-applied liquid systems with a wide colour range Installation Substrate and general requirements The substrate should be sound, dry and free from loose or adhesionresisting particles. Where necessary, Alsan RS Mortar should be used for patching repairs of the substrate. The Alsan resin-based products (primers, waterproofing membranes, mortars and finishing coatings) should be applied at substrate and ambient temperatures between 0 C and 35 C. NB: For the Alsan RS 230 TT membrane resin, a correspondingly lower temperature range of between -5 C and 35 C applies. Priming the substrate Where necessary, a primer should be applied using a lambswool roller, the type being selected according to the substrate material, as follows: For synthetic resin-modified substrates and absorbent substrates, such as concrete, screed and timber an even film of Alsan RS 276 should be applied, leaving a period of 30 minutes before access or the application of subsequent layers. For asphalt, hot and cold bitumen coatings and tar substrates an even film of Alsan RS 222 should be applied, leaving a period of 30 minutes before access or the application of subsequent layers. For substrates that are completely non-absorbent, such as glass, metal or plastics surfaces no primer is necessary, although the surface should be rubbed down with abrasive paper, then cleaned with Alsan RS Cleaning Agent for a better key. The substrate adhesion should always be tested on site. Levelling Where necessary, levelling should be carried out to smooth any rough areas and differences in height, as well as imperfections in existing roofing or negative gradients, as follows: To smooth out unevenness in substrates, particularly at small cracks and joints, and to level out fleece overlaps, ready-mixed Alsan Surfacer should be applied using a brush or trowel. For the repair of broken-up areas of a depth >10mm and for levelling gradients, Alsan RS 242 Mortar should be poured onto the prepared surface, compacted immediately and smoothed out using a trowel. For the repair of broken-up areas of a depth 10mm and for levelling gradients, ready-mixed Alsan RS 233 Self-levelling Mortar should be poured on the surface and spread evenly using a trowel. 10

11 Expansion/working joints Expansion or working joints in the substrate should have additional reinforced resin coats between the primer and the main waterproofing coat, as in the following example: For expansion joints in a horizontal concrete deck, the joint should be pointed with Alsan RS Mortar, then covered with a 100mm wide strip of Alsan Joint (sliding) tape, followed by two fleece-embedded coats of Alsan RS 230 Membrane Resin, the first 200mm wide (at 1.5kg/m 2 ) and the second 350mm wide (at 2kg/m 2 ). Finally, a fleece-saturating layer (at 1kg/m 2 ) should be applied, followed by a top coat (at 1.5kg/m 2 ) of Alsan RS 230 Membrane Resin, both 350mm wide. Waterproofing Once the primer and any expansion/working joint coats have cured, a generous amount (approx. 2kg/m 2 ) of Alsan RS 230 Membrane Resin should be applied to the surface followed immediately by Alsan RS Fleece, which is embedded into the resin using a lambswool roller to remove any air pockets. If necessary, a further coat of Alsan RS 230 Membrane Resin (approx. 1.5kg/m 2 ) to saturate the fleece from above so that no more than the tips of the fleece are visible. Sealer coats Once the wearing surface of Alsan RS 233 Selflevelling Mortar has cured (after minutes), it should be finished with one of a number of sealer coats, as follows: If the wearing surface has been topped with quartz sand, or similar, a pigmented sealer coat of Alsan RS 288 Finish (at approx. 0.7kg/m 2 ) should be applied to fix the topping using a short-pile lambswool roller to distribute it evenly and roll it into the surface. For an enhanced finish, the Alsan RS 288 Finish (at approx. 0.6kg/m 2 ) should be applied using a rubber squeegee and smoothed over with a short-pile lambswool roller. If the wearing surface has not been topped with quartz sand, or similar, a pigmented sealer coat of Alsan RS 288 Finish (at approx. 0.6kg/m 2 ) should be applied and subsequently finished with Alsan RS Deco Chips. If an abrasion-resistant and slip-resistant surface is required, a layer of Alsan RS Textured Coating should be applied to the self-levelling mortar. Note: The reference above to Alsan RS 230 should be replaced by Alsan RS 260 where a low-odour formulation is required. Wearing surfacing Where necessary, and once the waterproofing layer is fully cured (approx. three hours), a wearing surface of Alsan RS 233 Self-levelling Mortar should be distributed evenly across the surface using a stainless steel trowel or float (at approx. 4.0kg/m 2 ). If required, the mortar should be topped immediately with a generous quantity of quartz sand, or similar with a grain size of 2-6mm, the sand should be spread over the surface, the excess being vacuumed off once the mortar has cured (after 30 mins). 16 Cold-applied liquid systems with a wide colour range Other Flag-Soprema systems Sopralene Sopralene elastomeric waterproofing is a comprehensive range of torch-on heatactivated membranes comprising two principal components: Expertly blended SBS elastomeric bitumen High resistance polyester reinforcement Sopralene is used for roof and general waterproofing, including basement walls, in both new and refurbishment projects. Products are covered by BBA Certificates and are also technically approved by national test laboratories in France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, USA and Japan. Flagon Flagon membranes represent a new generation of synthetic liners made using PVC and an innovative formulation of TPO, using EPR (ethylene propylene rubber) modified polyolefin. The systems are used for ballasted roofs (with and without pedestrian traffic), roof gardens, inverted roofs and roofs where the waterproofing membrane is exposed. They are also used in the engineering and hydraulic sectors. Flagon systems have a life expectancy in excess of 40 years (PVC) and 30 years (TPO). The product range also includes Copper Art and Silver Art, easily installed membrane systems that reproduce the beauty of traditional metal and standing-seam metal roofing at a reduced cost. Duoflex The Duoflex Structural Waterproofing System is a hot-melt system, which provides a strong, durable, flexible, lightweight and self-healing monolithic barrier to the transmission of water and water vapour. Designed to last the lifetime of the structure to which it is applied, it eliminates future maintenance and gives rise to particularly low life cycle costs. Duoflex is an environmentally friendly formulation of rubberised bitumen, modified with SBS styrene butadiene polymer resins, supplied in solid blocks ready for melting on site. It offers superior mechanical properties and has minimal environmental impact. Duoflex is designed to retain its durability and elasticity, absorbing repeated movements and stress within the structure. 16

17 Metadeck Metadeck profiled metal roofing systems are manufactured to provide optimum performance combined with a high degree of design flexibility to realise exciting construction opportunities. They are manufactured from the finest, high quality galvanised steel and aluminium and are available in both un-perforated and web-perforated forms. The steel is galvanised to EN S320GD + Z275 and can be supplied in a range of gauges, including 0.75mm, 0.88mm, 1.00mm, 1.13mm, 1.25mm and 1.50mm. The aluminium 3004 grade is available in 1.25mm and 1.5mm gauge, with a standard internal finish of off-white 15-micron RAL 9002 polyester. Optigreen Optigreen systems are the perfect way to create sustainable green roofing solutions, promoting biodiversity and incorporating thermal insulation, vapour control layers, drainage and filtration layers. Optigreen Extensive roofs are low-maintenance, eg, with grasses and sedums, and are accessed for routine maintenance only. Optigreen Intensive roofs can include shrubs and small trees, and are intended for frequent recreational use, eg, roof gardens. Modern green roofs have been in existence for around 35 years and Optigreen was one of the first major innovators in green roof design. All Optigreen roofs are backed by a comprehensive quality system in accordance with ISO 9001 and are certified to FLL standards for green roof systems. Sopracover offers major advantages over other warranties of a similar type, covering consequential loss, product liability, design liability and workmanship. Sopracover warranty scheme It is more than a marketing tool, being based on proven world-class products. The waterproofing materials have been independently tested and have been shown to have a life expectancy of 'at least 30 years'. Cover is maintained if Flag-Soprema or the roofing contractor cease to trade. The insurance cover is transferable to any new building owner. An individual warranty certificate is issued for every project, complete with component listings. No compulsory maintenance agreements are required from the installer, and no costs relating to the warranty are demanded from the beneficiary. Inspections are carried out by Flag-Soprema throughout the warranty period, at year 10 and 20. Sopracover includes: Payment of the cost of materials and labour to rectify any failure in the waterproofing products or their design and resultant damage to the roofing system.
