2 REPORT ON RURAL HOUSING TECHNOLOGIES, RURAL TECHNOLOGY PARK, NIRD, HYDERABAD A Visit was done by ASPA (Ashoka school of Planning & Architecture ) students of B Arch 1 st& 3 rd Sem along with faculties to The National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) on at about 9:30am to 4:30pm as part of academics so as students can learn various building construction techniques and various materials available for construction. The National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), is a autonomous organization of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, is the apex body for undertaking training, research, action research and consultancy assignments in the rural development sector in India. It is located in the serene rural surroundings of Rajendranagar about 15 kms, away from the city of Hyderabad. As a think-tank for the Ministry of Rural Development, NIRD acts as a storehouse of information on rural development and assists the Ministry of Rural Development in the policy formulation and choice of options in rural development to usher in the desired change. The Rural Technology Park (RTP) spread over 62 acres of land was established at NIRD campus in 1999 as an instrument for transfer of technologies to the villages. The RTP aims at spreading awareness on current rural technologies and promoting sustainable rural development. It has established affordable and cost effective technologies for rural areas. The RTP showcases a variety of low cost Rural Technologies and also provides for capacity building in terms of skill development and entrepreneurship. National Rural Building Centre, Rural Sanitation Park, Bio-Sanitation, Water Harvesting Technologies, Solar Energy, Bio Gas Plant, Rural Technology Entrepreneurship are the key elements of RTP. Housing is central to enhancement of quality of life for accessing all basic amenities and facilities. Rural habitants prefer to build houses with locally available materials that are the cheapest with their house building skills and knowledge relating to the aspects of availability, utility, workability, cost and durability. Rural Building Centre in RTP acts as a platform for exhibiting field tested flooring, walling and roofing technological options that are marked by feasibility of construction in rural areas blending old and new techniques, for diverse social groups, cost effective, stable and durable models withstanding the vulnerabilities of monsoons, various geo-climatic conditions and disaster prone locations like earth quake, cyclones, floods and fire across rural India and resistant even in multi hazard conditions. 2
3 The Rural Building Centre was further developed by taking in to consideration the different typologies that are existing across the country for specific typologies of Himalayan, Sikkim, North eastern side housing typologies like Bamboo walling structures, Wardha type of houses in Central India and the famous Laurie Baker designs from South India. The plans of the structures are replicable to the typology of the concerned region. These structures so developed save the cost of construction to an extent of 25 to 40% less than the conventional costs. Observations on different types of technologies adopted in construction at RTP were made by students and recorded and made a brief presentation on NIRD. Housing technologies adopted in construction at RTP were STONE PATTI HOUSE, TRADITIONAL MUD HOUSE, RAT TRAP BOND HOUSE, MUD BLOCK HOUSE, BRICK PANEL HOUSE, STABLISED MUD BLOCK HOUSE, BRICK DOME HOUSE, FILLER SLAB HOUSE, JACK ARCH HOUSE, WATTLE AND DAUB HOUSE, STONE MASONRY HOUSE, BAMBOO HOUSE, FERRO CEMENT CHANNEL HOUSE, Etc were seen. Main concept, features, plan, areas, materials and technology of construction were detailed studied by students. The development of a country lies when its majority of population living in rural areas becomes part of the growth. The development requires an integrated and comprehensive programs, technology and strategies in building construction. Comprehensive rural development identified as one of the main approaches towards achieving the objectives of reducing poverty, expand employment and enterprises creation and enhancing livelihood opportunities in the region to improve the wellbeing of people living in the rural areas. To address the above issue, identification and transfer of existing rural technologies available in India and other countries will have a great potential to enhance the livelihood and habitation in the rural areas. Therefore, it requires a platform to create to show case a large number of rural technologies for its demonstration, dissemination, adoption to benefit a larger group of people hence the Rural Technology Park. The Rural Technology Park would lay emphasis on the introduction of appropriate technological inputs for improving the productivity and quality of construction with different building materials, techniques and construction technology at the same time helping for skill enhancement of the labour with vigorous trainingprograms and capacity to build with better use of local resources with concurrent energy and ecomanagement, development of management and entrepreneurial skills. It is a platform for introduction of newand innovative technologies those have been developed by young and rural entrepreneurs etc. 3
4 There is a huge scope for delivering such interventions as it has been amply demonstrated the technologies developed by different stalwarts like Laurie Baker etc. It is sincerely envisaged that the establishment of such Rural Technology Park would go a long way in creating concrete and tangible socio-economic benefits for the rural people through providing financial assistance to demonstrate such types of housing in the Rural Technology Park. The objective is also to spread awareness and promote the concept of transfer of appropriate rural technologies to the rural mass with the support of NIRD. Through the brief pictorial presentation is displayed at the entrance of each construction with model showing the techniques and technology is also displayed in each construction with the display of actual materials used in that construction and is more educating and aspiring to learners. 4
