2 4:00-4:15 Wrap-Up and Announcements Local host Session Abstracts and Presenter Bios (as of 25 February 2014) Dr. Rob Shogren, MBA, P.E, P.Eng, Ph.D. Lafarge Portland Limestone Cements, Where We are Today This talk will focus on specification changes to CSA that have occurred since the 2013 Spring Alberta ACI/ARMCA Training. The discussion will also focus on sulfate resistance testing that has been conducted both in academia and private industry as well as improvements to the product that have been realized since that time. I have been working in the concrete industry since 1999 where I worked as a quality control technician for a concrete paving company. Following that I began working for Lafarge in the Pacific Northwest as a Technical Services Engineer where I became very involved with concrete mix design, durability and associations pertaining to concrete science. While working at Lafarge I earned by Ph.D. at the University of Washington under Dr. Don Janssen. When I am not working I enjoy the outdoors, fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, backpacking. I also enjoy time with my wife and three kids, coaching sports, and spending time. Scott Cumming. M.E., P.Eng Levelton Consultants Ltd. Use of High Volume Supplementary Cementitious Materials and other Thermal Mitigation Strategies for Mass Concrete Structures. Scott Cumming is a Professional Engineer registered in British Columbia. He is the Leader of the Concrete Technology Group within the BC Materials Division of Levelton Consultants Ltd. He completed a Bachelor s Degree in Civil Engineering at UBC in 2002 and a Master s Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Florida in 2004 with an emphasis on nondestructive condition assessment of concrete infrastructure. Scott is the current president of the ACI BC Chapter and serves on ACI committees 207 Mass Concrete, 228 Nondestructive Testing of Concrete, 506 Shotcreting, and C660 Shotcrete Nozzleman Certification. In April 2013, he received the ACI Young Member Award for Professional Achievement from the American Concrete Institute.
3 His areas of expertise include: testing of thermal properties of mass concrete, design of thermal mitigation strategies for mass concrete, condition assessment of concrete structures, design of concrete repair strategies, nondestructive evaluation of concrete and masonry structures, concrete mixture proportioning, aggregate testing and qualification, and shotcrete technology. Andrew Sneddon. Graham Piling Design considerations for Piling Concrete. To provide an insight into the concrete requirements for various types of Piling and how differing construction restraints and ground conditions may determine the final mix design. With over 30 years piling experience gained from the UK piling market I recently jumped ship and moved to Canada. My piling experience spans all disciplines of pile installation from Driven to Drilled to CFA. My 30 year s experience has resulted in a working knowledge of pile concrete requirements based upon the simple fact that the UK Piling Contractor is responsible for their own concrete mix design. I am currently employed by Graham Construction in their relatively new Piling Division, overseeing all Rotary and CFA operations. J.D. (Dave) Robson, P.Eng. Principal Specialist; Tetra Tech EBA Inc.) ASR and CSA changes Topic 1: An introduction to CSA A23.1/A The more contentious changes to the code for concrete materials and methods of construction will be reviewed. As always, proposed code changes invoke lively debate between committee members and the public at large. At least 26 items remain to be balloted before this discussion is finished for the current code cycle. Upcoming changes to residential concrete, the use of Portland Limestone cement in concrete exposed to sulphates and mitigation of Alkali Aggregate Reactivity (AAR) will be discussed. Topic 2: Using Standard Practice CSA A A to identify the degree of alkali-reactivity of aggregates and to identify measures to avoid deleterious expansion in concrete will be reviewed using typical Alberta materials. This practice includes new tables 4 and
4 5 to identify the level of ASR (Alkali Silica Reactivity) risk and to classify structures based on the severity of consequences should ASR occur. Mr. Robson has been a consulting engineer for almost 35 years. A 1978 graduate of the University of Toronto, he moved to Edmonton in 1986 and shortly thereafter was introduced to the joys of concrete. Past chair of the Alberta Ready Mixed Concrete Association (ARMCA) technical and training committee, he represents ARMCA as a voting member of CSA Committee A23.1/A23.2 and is involved with the subcommittees on performance, testing, AAR and editing. Oliver Gepraegs, M.A.Sc., P.Eng. Levelton Consultants Ltd. Improving Concrete Durability and Reducing GHG Emissions with Supplementary Cementing Materials Mr. Gepraegs is a Principal with Levelton Consultants and the Regional Manager of the company s Alberta operations. He joined Levelton's Construction Materials Division in 2001 and specializes in corrosion assessment and rehabilitation of deteriorating reinforced concrete structures. While completing his Master s degree at the University of Waterloo, his research focused on corrosion monitoring of reinforcing steel, development of corrosion protection strategies for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and service life assessment of high-performance concrete. Oliver is the current president of the ACI Alberta Chapter and serves on ACI Committees 222 (Corrosion of Metals in Concrete), 345 (Concrete Bridge Construction, Maintenance and Repair), and 365 (Service Life Modeling). His areas of expertise include the assessment and rehabilitation of structures, nondestructive evaluation, service life modeling and life cycle cost analysis, design of concrete and shotcrete mixes, laboratory and field trial mix programs, and quality management. He is a registered professional engineer in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. EDMONTON: GNCTR 2014: Concrete Adventures at the University of Alberta The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race is a national engineering competition. This presentation will outline the team s activities throughout the year and some of the successes and challenges experienced at competition. Thank you for attending this educational conference. Please mark your calendars for the next ACI, AB Chapter Event - Luncheon series Edmonton Wednesday April 9, 2014
