1 Page 1 of 6 American Society for Quality Section 1005 Newsletter November for the most current information ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Newsletter Editor I would like to thank Gary Reese for filling in for me last month. Once in a while I do get a vacation from the Elkhart area. I really don't find the present election to be any fun. As auditors and quality managers, the election could be very trying on our nerves if we are looking for truth, evidence and the root cause of the problem. (Surprise, that is all I am going to say about that!) Please note we have a seminar coming up. Well, have a great day in the quality of your life. Don Greetings From The Chair Welcome to November! I want to start off by saying that we have filled the slots for Program Coordinator and Treasurer. All SLC names will be released next months. Again, I would like to thank those members for coming forward to help of local ASQ 1005 Section. At our last SLC meeting we discussed membership and what we can do to encourage our members to attend meetings and help support events. I spoke to the SLC and got an overwhelming response. The approach will be a personal one versus going in a direction of just sending a letter. I will
2 Page 2 of 6 personally be contacting members via phone and reaching out. If you see a phone call from an 860 area code (CT) that is me. I am a one on one person. I don't like texting or hiding behind an . I look forward to reaching out and talking to a sample of the membership to discuss this important topic. As the year draws to a close, let us reflect on how we as quality professionals have impacted the world of quality. Change in the quality culture of our companies starts with us. Be proactive, be patient, be the change. The ASQ Headquarters is offering a free 6 month membership to colleagues to try. Go to to download the tool kit and also read up on it. I will call headquarters for the free trial membership information. Please contact me via for any questions about ASQ and how we can help you. Happy Thanksgiving! Thank You in advance for your help, George ASQ Section 1005 Chair November 17th Meeting The Center for Business Excellence- How it can work for you One of the objectives of our monthly meeting programs is to highlight local resources that are available to help our companies to remain competitive in the global market. Working through the Greater Elkhart Chamber, the vision of the Center for Business Excellence is to make North Central Indiana a more vibrant economic region by helping businesses excel through continuous improvement and strong leadership. This untapped resource works with For Profit and Not-For-Profit businesses to transform their
3 Page 3 of 6 cultures and results through training and implementing continuous improvement principles, Lean tools and organizational skill building. Merritt will share the Center's core mission, how to can help you and some success stories in Lean Transformations. The Center for Business Excellence hosts the Michiana LEAN Network, serving Elkhart, St. Joseph, Marshall, Lagrange and Kosciusko counties. In addition, the organization offers more comprehensive Lean Enterprise training, including Lean Transformation Design and implementation services, Leadership and Team Building Training, organizational design support, metrics tracking and score card development. "We want to teach and implement the principles of continuous improvement to help organizations transform their current strengths into even greater value to their clients and customers," explains Dilts. "We will continue that support for area manufacturers but will also reach out to Service providers and Not-For-Profit organizations who provide tremendous value to this community. We want to do this in a collaborative approach to help increase this region's ability to compete internationally while improving lives locally." While manufacturers have utilized Lean principles for many years, Not-For- Profits and Service organizations are part of a growing trend of new adopters. Leaders in these organizations realize the positive impacts these principles and tools can have in providing greater value to their clients and customers. Merritt Dilts - Bio Merritt is a Vice President with the Cent er of Business Excellence, a Not for Profit organization directly affiliated with the Greater Elkhart Area Chamber of Commerce.
