MANY SHADES OF GREEN

Program Objectives Introduction to the Fundamentals of the USGBC LEED and GBI Green Globes building certification rating systems Understand the Certification and Administrative Delivery changes between USGBC LEED 2009 and LEED v4. Understand the GBI -Green Globes Certification and Administrative Delivery Process. Review a comparison of the Pricing and Project Certification Administration Delivery Flow between the two building rating systems. Learn some Tips and Recommendations for successful project certification delivery.

Disclaimer This presentation is based on USGBC LEED and GBI Green Globes for New Construction. Specific building type ratings and rating systems such as Schools, Hospital, Retail, Existing Building, Interiors Residential etc. are not included or referenced in this presentation.

Program Objective - One Introduction to the Fundamentals of the USGBC LEED and GBI Green Globes Building Certification Rating Systems

USGBC LEED v2009 MAIN CREDIT CATEGORIES Sustainable Sites Strategies that minimize the impact on ecosystems and water resources. Water Efficiency Promote smarter use of water, inside and out, to reduce potable water consumption. Energy & Atmosphere Promote better building energy performance through innovative strategies.

USGBC LEED v 2009 MAIN CREDIT CATEGORIES Materials & Resources Encourage using sustainable building materials and reducing waste. Indoor Environmental Quality Promote better indoor air quality and access to daylight and views. Plus Innovation in Design and Regional Priorities

USGBC LEED v 2009 LEED rating system has 100 base points plus six Innovation in Design points and four Regional Priority points, for a total of 110 points: Certified: pts. Silver: pts. Gold: pts. Platinum: 80+ pts.

Green Globes is a web-based program for green building guidance and certification that includes an onsite assessment by a third party. Current version launched on June 4, 2013

Changes to the current version: Criteria developed by ANSI-approved consensus body Focus on Energy with 4 paths for performance Increased Focus on Materials & Resources Emphasis on LCA (life cycle assessment) New approach assessing building assemblies, furnishings, finishes, and fit outs utilizing multi-attribute certifications and/or third-party assessments by approves organizations. Coverage of federal government Guiding Principles for New Construction, with separate compliance detail report

The program includes: A environmental assessment protocol Software tools to simplify online assessment Best practices guidance for green construction and operations Third-party assessors with green building expertise A rating/certification system

Environmental Assessment Areas: Project Management 50 Site 115 Energy 390 Water 110 Materials and Resources 125 Emissions 50 Indoor Environment 160 Total Points 1000

Green Globes Rating Scale 35 54% = One Globe 55-69% = Two Globes 70 84% = Three Globes % = Four Globes

Green Globes Program Features: Weighted Criteria and Flexibility No Perquisites Green Globes recognizes that each verified achievement should count according to its assigned points.

Green Non-Applicable Criteria N/A option includes all technical criteria except: actual energy and water performance, and management type criteria. Primary reasons for the N/A designation are regional variations, building occupancy type, and conflict with state or local jurisdictions.

Green Non-Applicable Criteria The credits associated with third-party assessor verified N/A designations are deducted from the total applicable points to avoid penalizing the owner/user. Green Globes limits the award of N/A designations to a total of 100 points for each building/project.

Partial Credit Includes several criteria with incremental credit depending on the level of achievement. Many criteria have built-in point award methodologies that incorporate threshold energy and water performance. Third-party assessor allowed to award partial credit for any criteria where practical, based on professional judgment.

After achieving a minimum threshold of 35% of the 1,000 total points in the preliminary self-evaluation, buildings are eligible to seek a Green Globes certification and rating for their environmental sustainability and achievements.

The process utilizes third-party assessors (GGA) with expertise in green building design, engineering, construction, and facility operations. These professionals interface with project teams and building owners to review documentation and conduct onsite building tours.

Program Objective - Two Understand the USGBC LEED Certification and Administrative Delivery changes between LEED 2009 and LEED v4.

USGBC LEED v4 Key Changes

Stage 1 Report Sample

Stage 2 - Report When construction and commissioning (if applicable) are essentially complete, GBI will schedule a third-party assessor to perform the Stage II Site Assessment for your project. Whenever possible, GBI will assign the same assessor for both your Stage I and Stage II assessments. Note that the site visit typically must be scheduled at least 30 days in advance. In the weeks leading up to the site visit, your assessor will contact you to discuss the itinerary and specific details of the assessment.

Stage 2 - Report After the visit, the assigned assessor will create a report of his/her findings that contains the recommended Green Globes score and rating. GBI will review the report and issue the appropriate Green Globes certification.

Program Objective - Four Review a comparison of the Pricing and Project Certification Administration Delivery flow between the two building rating systems.

USGBC LEED v4 BD+C Registration is a flat fee paid up front at the time of registration; rates are based on the date of registration. The certification fee is based the project's rating system and size; it is calculated and paid when the project team submits documentation for review in LEED Online. The fees for either the standard and split review cover both the preliminary and final reviews.

Program Objective - Five Learn some Tips and Recommendations for successful project certification delivery.

Common Green Building Tips IDP/Early Project Charrette Include Owner, A/E Design Team, Constructor and any project specific consultants for specialized project elements Include Commissioning Agent (CxA) and Building Element Commissioning Agent (BECx). Their review and input on the design details will go a long way towards the construction of a successful building that performs as anticipated. Assign champion for each credit or specialty element that will be included in the building certification. The more complex the project the more this group need to be aware and able to understand the goals of the project and the expectations of the Owner.

Common Green Building Tips Utilize add-on modeling tools for developing Energy Performance strategies, Daylighting configurations, Site selections and building alignment, Water Use measurement and effective utilization. These can include Sketch-Up and REVIT Add ons, Sefaira, Energy Star Target Finder, WaterScore, etc. Gather and Evaluate Life Cycle Assessments, use Energy Star rated appliances, convert to LED lighting and design exterior lighting to be sky and adjacent property friendly, Plant local trees and vegetation that uses little or no irrigation.

Common Green Building Tips Design and Build with the whole building performance and end user requirements as a constant realignment of the design element strategies and selection. Owner/End User Training and System Demonstration of the working elements is critical to achieving the intended performance and durability of the building.

Green Globes NC Tips Include Green Globe Professional (GGP) on Project team and encourage other project team members to get certified as a GGP; i.e., Engineers, Owners Representatives, Construction Professionals, and other key Building Element professionals. Utilize the Green Building Initiative online and call in interpretive resources. The assigned GGA can also be a resource and assist with decision making during the review process.

USGBC LEED v4 BD+C Tips Determine the expertise of the individuals on the project team including the Designer, Owner, & Constructor; including LEED GA/AP/AP with Specialty LEED User: Subscription site includes overview of each credit with supporting forms and tools for compiling documentation require for LEED On-Line submittal for each credit.

USGBC LEED v4 BD+C Tips GreenWizard: Online site developed to compile and document materials as they are selected for a project and then be directly submitted to the project LEED On- Line credits as completed.

Program Objectives Introduction to the Fundamentals of the USGBC LEED and GBI Green Globes building certification rating systems Understand the Certification and Administrative Delivery changes between USGBC LEED 2009 and LEED v4. Understand the GBI-Green Globes Certification and Administrative Delivery Process. Review a comparison of the Pricing and Project Certification Administration Delivery Flow between the two building rating systems.
