3 Thick walls absorb the sound better! this is a fact which for years now has been clearly proven from a physical point of view. And this is why we have equipped our complete range of Skolan-dB original soundproof pipes, from DN/OD 50 to DN/OD 150, with thick walls and a substantial weight per unit area (1.59 gr./cm 3 ). Only the wall thickness and density of the original Skolan-dB guarantee genuine sound absorption without any additional measures needing to be taken. Why soundproof? In drainpipes, sound occurs which is transmitted by air and conducted by solids (for example, as a result of waste water impacting the walls of the pipes), particularly in gravity-feed pipes in the region of branch pipes and bends in the pipes. The special molecular structure and the great weight per unit area of the material polypropylene, reinforced with minerals with an extremely high molecular weight, come to bear here. 11 Fire Protection In many cases, fire protection requirements are already met by the constructor in the case of multi-storey buildings. Whenever active fire protection is required, Skolan-dB offers you practicable, inexpensive solutions. The new Skolan-dB fire protection seals are soundproof. In the case of the R90 sleeve, the piping in the region of the ceiling is sheathed with a commercially-sized 4 mm thick structureborne soundproofing, at least B2. The structureborne soundproofing is already integrated in the factory, making any insulation measures for fire protection purposes at the construction site unnecessary. R90 fire protection sleeves for plastering (ceiling and wall installation), fire resistance category R90 d 1 D D d kg DN mm mm mm unit Registration number: Z The basic principles of fire protection for buildings are regulated as minimum requirements in the standard building code. In Germany, fire protection laws for buildings are regulated individually by the federal states; the respective state building codes are therefore to be observed. In addition the provisions of DIN 4102 apply. Buildings in which no additional fire protection measures are needed with Skolan-dB: Free-standing residential buildings comprising not more than one apartment; ow residential buildings (up to 7 m. top edge of finished floor), comprising not more than two apartments; ow buildings of up to 7 m. top edge of finished floor (Hamburg, Bavaria and Baden Württemberg; BW = 8 m. top edge of the parapet). Buildings in which additional fire protection measures are required only in the area of the basement ceiling with Skolan-dB: ow buildings of up to 7 m. top edge of finished floor (does not apply to Hamburg, Bavaria and Baden Württemberg), Buildings of medium height < five full storeys (only Berlin). The basement ceiling must be constructed in R90 quality. For this purpose, fire protection sleeves approved by the DIBt may be used (see page 12), Buildings medium height of between 7 m. and 22 m. top edge of finished floor, in which, for Skolan-dB, fire protection separations (see page 12) are caried out only in the region of the basement celing, and in which the piping is carried out as a concealed installation in accordance with DIN 4102, part II. Ceilings are closed. There is no risk of fire and smoke transmission in the case of ceiling piping entrances using pipes of the B2 construction materials category in accordance with DIN 4102, provided that the pipes are consistently, on every floor apart from attics on the upper floor, coated, sheathed or covered with mineral plastering > 15 mm thickness on a non-combustible plaster support or with an equivalent covering made 11

12 Rooms with a high risk of fire (e.g. business premises and warehouses which serve as their own fire cut) require in the case of all buildings that the walls and ceilings be constructed in F90 quality. Further info on fire protection can be found in detailed publications by the sanitary/heating/air-conditioning trade associations. Branched piping which only runs within a single floor and does not lead through dividing walls, does not need to be covered. In the case of wall entrances through dividing walls, which must be fire-resistant, the piping can, in accordance with the 4-meter regulation, be provided with a non-combustible covering of a thickness of at least 15 mm. over a total length of 4 m, but not over a length of less than one meter on either side of the wall. Branched piping which only runs along one side of dividing walls and is not lead through ceilings does not need to be covered. 13 Installation-Instructions 1. Transport and storage Skolan-dB pipes must not be bent during transport. The full length of the pipes should be supported during transport. The pipes are to be laid down in such a manner that no damage occurs through deformation. Sockets must be unencumbered all around. At the construction site, stacking should not be carried out in excess of 1.50 m., even if wood is laid down in between layers. Sealing elements may not be stored outside for longer than two years. 2. Cutting the pipes to length The pipes can be cut to length with a commercial pipe cutter or with a fine-toothed saw. The cuts are to be made at an angle of 90 to the pipe shaft. Remove any trimmings or bumps at the disconnecting point. The cutting edges are to be smoothened on the inside and on the outside. Trim the spigot end of the pipe and clean if necessary. Chamfering is not required. Remove the sealing sleeve from the socket and, without any lubricant, pull it onto the shank of the pipe. Coat the seal with a lubricant from the outside (do not use oils or greases) and also provide the inside of the socket with lubricant. In the case of adapting lengths, push the shank with the sleeve into the socket. Slip-on sockets are pushed onto the spigot end until they resist. Check that the sealing sleeve is in the correct position. 3.2 Other plug connections Plug connections between pipes and fittings which are not produced with a slip-on socket must, in the case of a pipe length of a maximum of 3 metres, incorporate thermal changes in t t 1 t 2 DN mm mm mm mm Skolan-dB connections 3.1 Plug connections with sealing sleeves arger sealing sleeves are appropriate for slipon sockets and for adapting lengths. These seals are the standard connections between pipes and fittings. They are equipped with an extension compensator so that no measures need to be taken to allow for changes in length. The following procedure is to be observed: length of up to a maximum of 10 mm. For this reason, subsequent to producing the plug connection, pipes are to be pulled back 10 mm into the socket. Plug connections between fittings do not need to take any changes in length into consideration and can therefore be fully inserted. If necessary, clean the shank, the socket and the seal to remove any dirt. Check the position and the perfect condition of the lip sealing ring in the socket corrugation. Put lubricant onto the shank. Place the shank in a central position and push it into the socket until it resists. Pull the pipe not the fittings back by 10 mm and in a vertical position protect the pipe from subsequent slipping by means of clamps. 13

14 4. Installation Skolan-dB pipes are to be installed in such a manner that they are free of tension and are not inhibited by changes in length. The Skolan-dB drainage pipes are to be installed using commercial sound-absorbing pipe clamps with inserting tapes made of profile rubber. Pipe clamp with inserting tape as a loose clamp Slip-on socket with the possibility to stretch Additional connection couplings (such as those required in the case of cast-iron pipes) are not necessary with Skolan-dB. Plug connections are easier and quicker to produce, thus saving time and material required. Arranging the pipe clamps The distance between the pipe clamps in the case of horizontal piping is approx. 10 x the exterior pipe diameter. In the case of vertical installation, the space between clamps should be 1 2 metres, although 2 m. should not be exceeded. If possible do not install pipe clamps in the direct region of pressure areas. A fixed clamp and a loose clamp per pipe length (storey height of more than 2.50 m.) are recommended for drop pipe lines. Fixed clamps are fixed points in the piping system. In the case of pipes without sockets, clamps are to be placed direct above the fitting on the bottom end of the pipe. Fittings or groups of shaped parts are always to be located as fixed points. Even when they are installed, loose clamps enable unhindered lengthways movement in order to allow for thermal changes in length. In multi-storey buildings, drop pipes are to be secured against subsidence. The use of an adjustment length with a fixed clamp under the socket is recommended. 14

Installation in concrete / brickwork Skolan-dB pipes and fittings can be directly set in concrete or plaster provided that adequate care is taken. In order to prevent the concrete mixture from seeping into the socket gap, it should be sealed with adhesive tape. Open piping components are to be closed. The piping is to be installed in such a manner that it is prevented from moving during the cementing process. Should the piping be plastered under a gap in the wall, a layer of plaster of at least 1.5 cm should be applied onto a plaster support (for example, metal mesh). No acoustic bridge for structure-borne sound should be allowed to develop between the piping and the plaster support. In order to prevent this, the piping should be fully covered with sound insulation material (e.g. mineral wool or insulating sheaths). 6. Rainfall drainpipes Should rainfall drainpipes run through living rooms, perspiration insulation is also recommended for Skolan-dB. 7. Ceiling pipes Pipes installed through ceilings must be soundinsulated with structure-borne sound insulation material and be damp-proof. Should melted asphalt be put onto floors, the piping parts in the region where the pipe runs through the ceiling must be protected by means of protective pipes or by means of being wrapped in heat insulating materials. 8. Subsequent installation of piping Subsequent connections can be produced by means of the installation of a branch or by using sleeve sockets. In order to install, a sufficiently long piece of pipe ( = length of the shaped part d) is removed and the branch is inserted. Cutting edges are to be cleaned and smoothened. A sleeve socket is pushed onto both the remaining pipe without a socket and onto a piece of pipe equivalent to the gap. The piece of pipe is then inserted into the piping and the sleeve sockets are pushed over the cutting edges. The sleeve sockets are to be secured by means of clamps. 15
