1 Soybean cyst nematode-resistant soybean varieties for Iowa Prepared by Gregory L. Tylka, Department of Plant Pathology Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is widespread in Iowa. The nematode reproduces quickly (several life cycles per season), survives in the soil for up to 10 years in the absence of a soybean crop, and can cause substantial yield losses, particularly in dry years. Resistance is very effective for managing SCN. The results below illustrate how SCN-resistant varieties maintain acceptable yields and keep SCN populations in check. The data are average yields and end-of-season SCN population densities from two locations of the ISU SCNresistant Soybean Variety Trial Program in 2007 in which resistant and susceptible varieties were grown. On average, the SCN-resistant soybean varieties yielded 7 to 15 bushels per acre more than the susceptible varieties in the variety trial experiments. In addition to yielding more, the resistant varieties kept the SCN population densities from increasing, but the susceptible varieties allowed the SCN populations to increase to 4,700 to more than 15,000 eggs per 100 cc at harvest. Yield (bushels per acre) End-of-year SCN population densities (eggs per 100 cc soil) Variety trial location SCN-resistant SCN-susceptible SCN-resistant SCN-susceptible Albert City, IA ,004 15,188 Urbana, IA ,126 4,781 The number of soybean varieties with genetic resistance to SCN available in maturity groups O, I, II, and III has increased dramatically since the early 1990s (Figure 1). Today, most soybean seed companies have SCN-resistant soybean varieties available for Iowa growers. Most of the SCN-resistant varieties now possess the Roundup Ready trait, and several of the resistant varieties possess the low-linolenic acid trait Figure 1. Number of maturity group O, I, II, and III SCNresistant soybean varieties available to Iowa soybean growers, (data unavailable for 1992 and 2005). What should one consider when choosing an SCN-resistant variety? Yield Potential: The most important characteristic of SCN-resistant soybean varieties is yield potential in SCN-infested fields. The yield of SCN-resistant varieties can vary greatly and cannot be predicted by yield performance in non-infested fields. Consequently, many SCN-resistant soybean varieties are evaluated each year in the Iowa State University (ISU) SCN-resistant Soybean Variety Trials. The results of these variety trials are published annually in ISU Extension publication IPM 52, which can be obtained by calling the ISU Department of Plant Pathology ( ) and on the Internet at Iowa soybean growers are encouraged to consult this publication for guidance on the relative performance of SCN-resistant soybean varieties. However, the variety trial data are from a limited number of locations and should be used only as a beginning point for developing an SCN management program for any specific field. The performance of individual SCN-resistant soybean varieties will vary PM 1649 Revised December 2007

2 among locations and years, so growers are encouraged to evaluate several SCN-resistant soybean varieties at their own locations to determine the best varieties for their local conditions. Effect on SCN Population Densities: In addition to yield, growers must consider the effectiveness of the varieties in suppressing reproduction of the nematode. SCN populations may not be kept in control despite high yields because SCN-resistant varieties (even high-yielding varieties) can vary considerably in how well they control population densities. For example, the yields of the top three conventional (non-roundup Ready ) soybean varieties that were evaluated in the north-central Iowa location of the ISU SCN-resistant Soybean Variety Trials in 2001 are shown in Figure 2 below. Note that there is no significant difference among the yield of these three varieties. However, one of the varieties did not control the nematode as well as the other two, as illustrated by the end-of-season SCN egg population densities (shown in Figure 3). Such a large difference in nematode control among high-yielding soybean varieties is not rare. Consequently, growers should consider how SCN-resistant soybean varieties affect SCN population densities in addition to how well they yield in order to ensure maximum soybean productivity of their land for years to come. Yield (bu/acre) Three of the best-yielding conventional non-roundup Ready soybean varieties, 2001 Figure 2. End-of-season SCN egg population densities in plots of the three best-yielding conventional (non-roundup Ready ) soybean varieties in a north-central Iowa variety trial location in The least-significant-difference value was 5,430. Other Defensive Traits: SCN population densities tend to be greater as soil ph increases from 5.5 to 8.0, and iron deficiency chlorosis can be a problem once soil ph rises above 7.4 or so. Soybean varieties vary in their sensitivity to high ph soils and iron deficiency chlorosis. Because high population densities of SCN frequently occur in high ph soils, many growers need SCN-resistant soybean varieties that also have good tolerance to iron deficiency chlorosis. Iron deficiency chlorosis tolerance scores are provided for most of the SCN-resistant varieties listed in this publication. Minimizing the effects of iron chlorosis will reduce the overall stress of the soybean crop, thus also reducing the yield-reducing effect of SCN. SCN is not the only soybean pathogen that occurs in Iowa soybean fields. Other common soybean diseases in Iowa include brown stem rot, Phytophthora stem and root rot, sudden death syndrome, and white mold. Consequently, a soybean variety with multiple disease resistance is often needed. And some diseases, such as brown stem rot and sudden death syndrome, are made more severe by SCN. Growers must observe their soybean fields for the presence of all common soybean diseases and then decide which of the diseases cause the most severe and consistent yield loss from year to year. SCN is among the most damaging and persistent soybean pathogens that occur in the state. 2

3 Should growers attempt to manage the different types of SCN resistance that are used? Currently, there are three main genetic sources for SCN resistance genes in commercial soybean varieties, namely PI88788, Peking, and PI (also known as Hartwig and CystX resistance). Each of these sources of SCN resistance contains several genes that confer resistance to the nematode. Consequently, soybean varieties developed from the various sources of resistance may not all contain the same genes in the same combinations. All sources of SCN resistance allow limited reproduction of only a few nematodes, and limited reproduction by a few nematodes on a resistant soybean variety does not pose a problem in a single growing season. However, if soybean varieties containing the same source of resistance are grown repeatedly for many years, a population of nematodes that readily feed on that source of resistance may build up. Thus, use of resistant soybean varieties, particularly any single SCN-resistant variety, should not be considered the sole solution for managing SCN. Reports of SCN populations able to reproduce well on SCN-resistant soybean varieties with PI88788 source of resistance has increased dramatically in the past few years. This may be a consequence of using resistant varieties with PI88788 source of resistance numerous times in the past several years. Unfortunately, of the 763 SCN-resistant soybean varieties included in this publication, only 16 have something other than PI88788 listed as a specific source of resistance. Iowa State University recommends growing non-host crops, such as corn, in conjunction with soybean varieties with different sources of resistance in a crop rotation scheme to discourage the buildup of nematode populations that reproduce readily on resistant soybean varieties. If growers cannot utilize soybean varieties with different sources of SCN resistance in successive soybean crops, they should try to grow different SCN-resistant varieties derived from the common source of SCN resistance, PI88788 (Figure 4). When should growers begin to use resistant soybean varieties for management of SCN? Iowa State University recommends that SCN-resistant soybean varieties be grown in fields with low or moderate SCN population densities, even fields with very low levels Year 1 PI88788 SCN-resistant soybean Year 6 Nonhost crop Year 2 Year 5 Nonhost crop SCN-susceptible soybean of the nematode. The reason for utilizing SCN-resistant soybeans in fields with low population densities is that the nematode can reduce soybean yields significantly at low population densities under hot, dry weather conditions. Furthermore, ISU SCN-resistant Soybean Variety Trial data show that many currently available SCN-resistant soybean varieties have high yield potential even when grown in fields with low population densities of the nematode, so there s not much of an economic risk in using an SCN-resistant soybean variety in a field with low population densities of the nematode. Using SCNresistant soybean varieties immediately once an infestation is discovered will stop the increase in SCN population densities and allow for greater success at implementing the recommended crop rotation scheme (Figure 4). The following list is a compilation of soybean varieties in maturity groups O, I, II, and III that are marketed as having resistance to SCN. The resistance ratings reported here were provided by the seed companies offering these varieties for sale. Iowa State University has not verified the resistance claims. Different seed companies may use different criteria and have data from different locations, so it is not recommended to use these ratings for comparisons between companies. Keep in mind that companies may not use the same standards to develop these ratings. Varieties are arranged in tables by maturity group and brand.
