They intend to: Serve as a platform for regional technical exchanges on forest cover monitoring, carbon stocks assessment and drivers of deforestation in the Guiana Shield; Build the capacity of targeted countries through sharing of good practices and lessons learnt, as well as through the intervention of external experts; Identify needs in terms of capacity building and technology transfer, including in the perspective of developing joint efforts on REDD+ and Land-Use Planning through the creation of regional tools. Targeted audience: Project partners technical experts and managers
Working Groups until now Since the last SC meeting in December 2013: Terms of Reference developed and shared, based on SC members feedbacks List of priority topics shared with participants, based on SC members feedbacks Organization of 2 WG meetings A total of 3 WG meetings until now: Georgetown, 5-6 December 2013 Paramaribo, February 2014 Cayenne, April 2014 Topics discussed: WG1: REDD+ MRV implementation and drivers of deforestation WG2: Mapping for REDD+: tools and classification methods for forest cover monitoring WG3: Design of a multipurpose National Forest Inventory 3 more meetings predicted until beginning of 2015
Presentation of Working Group Meetings 2 & 3
WG2: Mapping for REDD+: tools and classification methods for forest cover monitoring The two days of work were divided in four sessions, each one developing a specific sub-topic: Use of optical imagery for MRV Use of radar imagery for MRV Defining classes of land use Dealing with shifting cultivation in forest monitoring 4 experts invited to contribute to the discussions: Anne-Cécile Capel, ONFI s Geomatic unit manager Anoumou Kemavo, ONFI s Forestry and geomatic expert Anwar Helstone, CELOS Maureen Playfair, CELOS 28 participants All presentations and WG2 report can be downloaded at

WG4 planning two alternative topics Slash and burn agriculture and forest degradation Assess carbon fluxes in selective cutting concessions Monitoring options for forest degradation Slash and burn agriculture (is it forest or non forest? Based on practices, what are the carbon stocks and losses, how to discriminate it through remote sensing) Ideas for invited speakers Tropical agronomist Specialist of carbon stock assessment Carbon stock enhancement
WG4 planning two alternative topics Drivers of deforestation Quantifying the impacts of drivers of deforestation in the Guiana Shield current situation and needs and challenges How to assess and monitor drivers of deforestation in the REDD+ context? How to anticipate drivers of deforestation/degradation evolution? How this anticipation can feed a RL/REL? Use of knowledge and understanding of drivers of deforestation to improve land-use planning Ideas for invited speakers Environmental economist and specialist of RL/REL Land-Use planning expert Example of activities to address drivers of deforestation
Allocation of saved resources TOTAL available budget for 6 WGM Spent budget for 3 WGM Remaining budget 2.a Supporting expertise % b Logistics for WGM % % Organization of previous WGM enabled to save money comparing to the scheduled budget (about ). How to use this remaining budget: Organize longer or other type of working group meetings (e.g. including field work NB: to be put in perspective with Training and Technology Transfer Plan)? Organize 2 additional WG meetings? Organize discussion meetings (not necessarily working group but can start discussing beyond the initial purpose of WGM)?
