The woodland is rectangular in shape and the main access track runs alongside Margaretfield Wood giving access to most parts. A fast flowing beck passes just outside the eastern boundary separating woodland from the meadow when in summer Red Poll cattle contentedly graze. The ridge and furrow field pattern, a relic of Middle Ages agriculture, seen in the field can also be detected within the wood. A central band of open ground is perfect for absorbing the atmosphere whether by day or night and for camping and woodcraft activities. Beech, oak, ash and sycamore contrast with the Norway spruce. The first Hall was built as a hunting lodge in the 1620s and no doubt the woodland was an important part of the hunting landscape. Kiplin Hall is now held in trust and on display in the Hall there is some interesting history - including papers relating to the

2 formation of the state of Maryland in the US. In the woodland itself there is evidence of its use during the last war when Kiplin Hall was occupied by the RAF as a maintenance location, including the well-stoned hard tracks and the bays used for concealed storage. A1 road works at Catterick: route travelling southbound from the north via the A1 is unaffected from A1 northbound use either the Leeming exit or the south Catterick exit. This will take you to the main entrance between the two bungalows. Satnav: the postcode DL10 6SY is for the point shown by the red dot on the location map/s. Travelling west on the B6271 from Great Langdon, look for the 'Woodlands for Sale' sign on the right. Take the next right turn signed to Whitwell and Forest. From Bolton-on-Swale direction take this left turn a short distance after the entrance to Kiplin Hall (on the right). These directions are to access the woodland from the north - it is also accessible from the road directly off the B6271 next to the "Woodlands for sale" sign. Continue along this lane, past the Ecolodges then turn sharp right. The entrance is straight ahead (where the lane turns left) > drive up this private track between the two bungalows > through the open gate > past the large wooden building > travel a short distance along the woodland track and park on the right by the small 'For Sale' sign. Please do not park on the concrete area. Take the right hand track walk down here for about 200 metres and Margaretfield Wood is on the left and identified by the name sign and red boundary markings.

3 Boundaries: Are indicated by red markings on posts and trees. To the north and west the boundary is the edge of the tracks, to the south it's the roadside fence and to the east the hedge line by the stream.
