(A) (1) (i) Regional approach focuses on a particular area of the earth. (ii) It studies all its physical as well as human factors which interact with each other and work in unison (union). (iii) They provide homogeneity which is the foundation of regional approach. (iv) It is an organized study of various phenomena spatially related to it. So, it is very important. (2) (i) The soils from the Eastern Ghats are mostly developed over ancient rocks like granite and gneisses. (ii) These are mostly in the form of different variants of red soils. (iii) Most dominant amongst them is red loamy soils. (iv) Being loamy or sandy in nature they do not retain moisture for a long time. (v) So, these are generally not very fertile soils. (3) (i) The vast expanses of beautiful sand dunes in the Rajasthan Desert are enchanting sites. They fascinate tourists by giving them amazing opportunity to enjoy the world famous Camel Safari. (ii) Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur, the three historical popular cities in the Rajasthan Desert form a tourist circuit where Camel Safaris are available. (iii) During the Safari treks, tourists are able to view the beautiful ecosystem of the Rajasthan Desert. (iv) The tour operators also arrange campsites replete with banquets and cultural performances. (v) A special luxurious train called Palace on Wheels passing through this region, is very popular especially with foreign tourists. All these attractions of the Rajasthan Desert fascinate tourists. (4) (i) Forest cover in this region is shrinking due to indiscriminate cutting of trees. (ii) Development projects, mining activities and transport development have led to the loss of thousands of hectares of valuable forests. (iii) Some valuable forests have been lost due to expansion of agricultural activities. 4 (B) (1) Evironmental problems in the Assam Plain : (i) The Assam Plain is prone to natural disasters with annual floods and frequent mild earthquakes. (ii) Brahmaputra river is flooded every year, resulting in heavy loss of property and life. (iii) Salinity is another problem faced by the farmers due to over irrigation. (iv) Andhis, loo, hot winds are common in May and June. (2) Maharashtra Plateau : (i) The northwestern part of the Deccan Plateau is known as the Maharashtra Plateau. (ii) The western limit of this plateau is marked by the Western Ghats. (iii) The hill tops of Maharashtra Plateau are generally flat. The altitude of the plateau ranges from 400 m. to 600 m. (iv) A number of offshoots from the Western Ghats run in a west to east direction and form the divisions between different river basins. (3) Fisheries in the Indian Islands : (i) Being rich in marine life, fishing is the main occupation of the people in the Indian islands. (ii) Numerous varieties of fish such as tuna, sharks, shrimp, lobsters etc., are found in plenty around the Lakshadweep sea. (iii) Tuna fish and fish products are exported from these islands. (iv) Fisheries are developed on the large scale around Andaman and Nicobar islands. 4

(ii) In their young stage, they have carved erosional features like deep gorges, V-shaped valleys, rapids and waterfalls. (iii) The main river systems are : (a) The Indus (b) The Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna. (iv) The Indus rises near Mansarowar in Tibet, flows through India and Pakistan and meets the Arabian Sea near Karachi. Its important tributaries are Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum. (v) The Ganga originates from its headstreams Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. After they join at Dev Prayag, their course is called Ganga. It travels through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and enters Bangladesh. (vi) The rivers Yamuna, Ramganga, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda and Son are the main tributaries of the Ganga. (vii) The Padma and the Jamuna join in Bangladesh and flow as the Meghna till its mouth. (viii) The Brahmaputra rises in Tibet and runs a long distance eastward till it enters India in Arunachal Pradesh. It passes through Assam before it enters Bangladesh to join the Ganga. 4 (2) (i) The Upper Ganga Plain was earlier forested. But, with the expansion of agriculture and human settlements, the area under forests has been shrinking. Comparatively, the Bhabar and Tarai tracts have more area under forest. (ii) The Bhabar and Tarai forests have a dominance of Sal and Semal trees. The drier western area of the plain has Shisham, Babul, Khair and Semal.

Only the uncultivable tracts have Bargad, Pipal, lmli, Mahua, Neem, Babul, etc. (iv) In the lower Ganga Plain, three types of natural vegetation are found : (a) Mangroves or Sundari are dominant in the delta region of West Bengal. (b) In the tropical evergreen forests of the Duar tracts in the north, Sal and Shisham are the main varieties. (c) In the deciduous forests in the west, Teak, Shisham and Bamboo are the main varieties. 4 (3) (i) The Western Ghats have great water resources owing to high rainfall. Their rugged topography, deep valleys and high relief provide ideal sites for constructing dams for multipurpose projects. (ii) They have large reserves of minerals. They have biodiversity. Hence, they have tremendous ecological value. (iii) The region with such a wealth of natural resources has many environmental problems. It has to protect its forest area cover to maintain its biodiversity. (iv) The forest area cannot be used simultaneously for agriculture, mining or other development projects. (v) In the coastal regions of high population density, the level of human intervention in the fragile coastal ecosystems goes on increasing. It is likely to lead to environmental problems (1) In a capitalist economy, means of production are owned, controlled and operated by private individuals. (2) An economic problem mainly arises due to scarcity of resources (1) It means the government of the country has the supreme power to make rules and to enforce laws (to govern the country). (2) It is a food security system launched by the government of India to distribute essential items like foodgrains, sugar, Kerosine etc., at subsidised rates among the needy people in India. (3) Industrial disputes lead to loss in the production of goods, leading to fall in supply and rise in prices. (4) Duties of a consumer : (i) Be quality conscious and aware of rights to restrict business malpractices. (ii) Beware of misleading advertisements. (iii) Insists the seller to give a bill, receipt and guarantee / warranty card. (iv) carefully inspect variety of goods and make the best choice. (Any two) (5) It is the rate of interest at which a central bank lends money to commercial banks (1) Causes responsible for increase in demand are : Increase in Public Expenditure : This leads to increase in the demand for goods and services in the country. This takes place because of the transfer of purchasing power to the household through Public Works Programmers. Increase in Consumer Spending : When there is an increased demand for goods and services, the consumer spending also increases. This happens because of the rise in the money income of the factors of production. Reduction in Taxation : This is due to the emergence of excess demand in the country. When the government reduces the direct taxes, more disposable income is left in the hands of public. Increase in Population : The fast increasing population puts a lot of pressure on demands for goods and services in the economy. This increases the price level. (2) Some remedial measures are : Food Bank : It is essential to establish food banks and to modernise godowns in every state. So that, foodgrain can be properly stored. Extension of the coverage of PDS : The coverage of PDS has to be extended, so that no needy person will be deprived from the benefits of PDS. Restructuring of PDS : It is necessary to check various malpractices in PDS. Rationing officers must visit fair price shops frequently to know their problems. It is necessary to eliminate bogus ration cards by raids of flying squads. 4
