What is the French Revolution? France was a monarchy Debt, crop failures, and an unequal tax system made the king very unpopular The French Revolution was when the French people overthrew their king

Turn and Talk Is a monarchy a bad idea or a good idea for a government? Why? ANS: Answers vary

Causes of the French Revolution Ideas from the Enlightenment: All people have rights and governments are responsible for protecting those rights

Causes of the French Revolution Debt from helping fund the American Revolution Crop failure causes the price of bread to rise beyond the ability of peasants to pay (starvation) Unfair tax system

Causes of the French Revolution 1789: Louis XVI calls the Estates General (representatives from all three estates) because he needed their permission to impose taxes Each estate s representatives met in different halls to vote, and each estate got one vote

Causes of the French Revolution The Third Estate (peasants) wanted to change the rules- all estates should meet together and each representative should get a vote Reps from the Third Estate declared themselves the National Assembly, separate from the Estates General. This was the first act of revolution.
