10 TANZANIA: Olkokola School, town of Arusha The only water source for the Olkokola village was a single standpipe with contaminated water more than 1,000 feet from the school. Thanks to this privately funded project, 900 children enjoy clean and safe drinking water right at the school. Even though the students don t have desks, pencils or paper, at least they have clean water to drink. Before the solar water pasteurizer was installed, about one-third of the children were sick at one time. Zablon Ole Muterian, Community Leader. Approximately 1,000 people live in the Commune of Miragôane, Department of Grand Anse, Haiti. At the Lhomond Health Station, the staff of 1 nurse and 2 health officials provide first aid, prenatal care, newborn vaccination, etc. Ms. Beneese Ferus, the nurse at the health station reports: 80% of the cases are children with diarrhea, diphtheria and other diseases, which have caused the death of several children. In March 2000, four Family Sol*Saver pasteurizers were donated by Safe Water Systems, in partnership with LiFA ( Pasteurized water is now used at the health station and also given to patients. when they come for consultation. 11 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Vuelta Larga, province of Puerto Plata Tristam B. Johnson Jr., of Brattleboro, Vermont, has overseen the installation of 15 Sol* Savers in El Salvador. This is an ongoing project sponsored by various Rotary Clubs in Vermont. He writes: This project has contributed to much better health. In Palo Grande, prior to 98, the incidence of cases of diarrhea was 25 per day on average at the primary school. Since installation of the system, the incidence has dropped to zero. The children are more energetic and attentive in school, and have the energy to participate aggressively in sports. Incidence rates have dropped in other communities as well. The Rotary Club of Grosse Pointe (Michigan) donated a Sol* Saver unit to a school in Vuelta Larga, in the Dominican Republic. The club was so happy with the performance of the system that they recently purchased another system to donate to a second school. According to Gross Pointe Rotary member Mr. Ralph Basile: The first system is now in operation for about 8 months and working quite well. The results of field-testing this unit showed that this system can be relied on to completely disinfect fecal indicator microorganisms naturally found in cistern waters, stream waters, and sewage waters. Thus, this system can be expected to render water safe for drinking based on the concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria. 15 THE SAFE WATER STORY In a slum near Bombay, India, thirsty children eagerly drink water flowing from a cracked pipe that runs through a sewage-filled ditch. In Cambodia, it s not uncommon for children to get their drinking water from ponds or slowmoving rivers used as a toilet and bath tub by neighbors and livestock. The story is the same all over the world. Diseases and parasites in untreated sewage-laden water kill more than three million people annually, most of them children. In India alone, three children die every minute from drinking unsanitary water, according to the Worldwide Fund for Nature. Many impoverished urban and rural dwellers know they ought to boil water before drinking it, yet in many cases they do not. The cost of kerosene or firewood, when available, can eat up a third of a family s income - money that would otherwise buy them food. These fuels also harm human health and the environment. Enter John Grandinetti and Will Hartzell, co-founders of Safe Water Systems in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1994, John Grandinetti attended a solar cooker conference in Costa Rica. There, he learned that water could be disinfected at temperatures lower than boiling, by pasteurizing it. A solar water heater contractor for more than 18-years, John immediately saw the potential for using conventional solar water heating technology to pasteurize water. Returning home to Hawaii, John designed a proprietary thermal valve to control the flow of heated water. He then combined it with a solar water heating collector and heat exchanger to invent the Sol*Saver - the world s first commercially available Solar Water Pasteurizer. Reliability, durability and extremely low maintenance were my primary design criteria while developing the Sol*Saver system, says John. He then brought in Will Hartzell as President, to initiate business development operations.
