2 SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY IN SENEGAL The solar thermal energy needs are very important because Senegal is facing a strong energetic dependence on imports of petroleum products(over 46% of export revenue has been mobilized to pay this invoice energetic) Solar thermal energy is used for: production of sanitary hot water, drying fruits and fishes, solar cooling, solar cooking, desalination There are other institutions working on solar thermal energy such as: Cifres, Gaston Berger University of Saint Louis, Alioune Diop University of Bambey, Polytechnic School of Thiés, Assane Seck University of ziguinchor, ANER(Agence Nationale des Energies Renouvelables), private companies

There are no statistics on the number of solar water collector installed

5 EXISTING KEY BARRIERS FOR SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY Existing key barriers for solar thermal energy Absence of a national strategy for the development and promotion of solar thermal energy High cost of investment for some solar thermal applications Research is not encouraged and the lack of exploitation of the results of research

6 NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS Needs and expectations of ESP on a ECOWAS solar thermal program? -Strengthen the capacity of stakeholders(technician, architects, developers ) -Promoting technology transfer -Support research Expectations to ministries of energy? -Reduce Taxes and tariffs on solar thermal systems -Promote local manufacturing industry of solar thermal systems Expectations to ministries of housing/urban planning/buildings Integrate solar thermal energy in real estate projects and programs Expectations to chambers of architects?/ Integrate solar thermal energy in the design of architectural plans

7 NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS What needed for dissemination of solar thermal energy broadly? -Awareness on issues related to the use of solar thermal equipement -Reduce the cost of solar thermal systems -Improve the creation of small and medium companies in the field of solar thermal energy -Support research in solar thermal energy
