1 Case Study - Flooding SCA Hygiene Products UK
2 SCA Hygiene Products - Floods During December 2015 the North of England suffered from severe flooding. SCA had 2 sites affected by flooding: Prudhoe Mill in Northumberland and Stubbins Mill in Lancashire. The following is a presentation of the flooding, issues arising from the floods and actions implemented to reduce the impacts of flooding in the future. 5 Prudhoe Mill discharges effluent into an on-site culvert, which then runs into a stream and eventually into the river Tyne. On the night of December 5 th, Unifibres and the effluent plant were severely flooded. This was caused by: Recent drainage work outside the mill resulting in additional water entering the Prudhoe site via the culvert. Water backing up from the stream, due to the high levels in the river Tyne June 26, 2017 Change Footer with Header & Footer button on Insert Ribbon 5
6 Emergency plans were put in place to protect transformers and workshops. During the morning the site received a delivery of reductive bleaching chemicals. There was no storage available in the dedicated chemical area and so the containers were stored in the pulper shed. The flooding covered the waste paper yard and the pulper shed. The flood water reached the valves on the bottom of the containers, resulting in thermal decomposition of the chemical and emissions of Sulphur Dioxide gas. 12 Site Actions and Improvements Adherence to chemical storage locations and quantities. Revised emergency information to include chemical storage location map and SDS for chemicals available for emergency services. Identification of hazards in flood risk areas. Cleaning and maintenance of discharge stream. June 26, 2017 Change Footer with Header & Footer button on Insert Ribbon 12
13 SCA Hygiene Products Stubbins Mill Stubbins Mill is located near the town of Ramsbottom in Lancashire. The mill is build into the side of a hill. This site also has a culvert, which takes excess water from the hillside. The site has been know to flood and there was a procedure to deal with floods. If actions are not taken during high rainfall the water floods electrical and product storage areas. June 26, 2017 Change Footer with Header & Footer button on Insert Ribbon 13

15 SCA Hygiene Products Stubbins Mill On December 26 th 2015 the North West of England suffered it s worse flooding for 40 years. The local area made the national news with the collapse of bridges and a pub over the river Irwell. The Stubbins Mill started to flood. Here is an account of the flood. 17 SCA Hygiene Products Stubbins Mill Mill On the day of the flood the paper-machines were closed. Thankfully the people on site knew the emergency procedure. Written procedures are not always suitable for this type of emergency. So the mill decided to produce a video procedure. This video plays on the screens around the site. Recently the site received a flood alert from the Environment Agency and the staff on site immediately installed the flood defences. Everyone on site knows what actions to take in case of flooding. June 26, 2017 Change Footer with Header & Footer button on Insert Ribbon 17
18 Flooding Advice Have an emergency plan for flooding, you never know when it might happen (next week, or in 35 years!) Firstly part of the procedure stay safe. Risks are different when an area is flooded. Assess which areas might flood. Protect electrical equipment and storage areas.
