4 Our Business Areas While JGC mainly operates in the oil and gas industries, including oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals, it is also engaged in wide-ranging infrastructure business such as energy, industry and social. P.6 Oil & Gas Since its founding in 1928, JGC has implemented diverse plant and facility EPC projects in the oil and gas field. These cover oil and gas production, separation and integration, petroleum refining, gas processing, LNG, petrochemicals and gas chemicals, and LNG receiving terminals. JGC is known for its global top-class performance as an engineering contractor in the field of oil and gas extraction and treatment, supported by a broad range of engineering technologies and excellent project management capabilities. The shale oil revolution that began in North America is currently bringing about major changes in the oil supply structure amid an outlook for expansion of global oil demand over the longer term driven by rising energy demand linked to rapid economic growth in emerging countries. Meanwhile, natural gas development is requiring projects to exploit gas fields located in challenging 3D (Deep, Difficult, Distant) areas or smaller-scale gas fields. This is because of the industry s exhaustion of large gas fields that can be readily developed. As the oil and gas business area undergoes such transformation, JGC is pursuing a broad range of opportunities from plant and facility EPC to the provision of operation and maintenance (O&M) services after plant completion, and is expanding to business investment and operation. It contributes to the successes of customer capital investment plans as well as economic growth and industrial advancement in resource-producing nations. Infrastructure P.12 Energy-related P.14 Industrial P.16 Social Energy infrastructure is a core component of all industry and people s livelihoods everywhere, and its availability is an important determining factor for a country s advancement. In particular, the development of power facilities is a pressing issue in many emerging countries with steadily growing electricity demand due to increasing populations and rising standards of living. JGC has handled a wide range of EPC work for power facilities, including fossil fuel power plants using oil, gas, and coal as fuel, nuclear power plants, and biomass, solar, and other renewable energy power plants, and also operates its own power and water production businesses and solar power businesses. JGC contributes to the promotion of energy infrastructure policies in various countries by developing power sources that accommodate the unique features of regions worldwide. JGC provides EPC services for non-ferrous metal refining plants, organic and inorganic chemical plants, and other industrial infrastructure and manufactures various catalysts, fine chemical products, and fine ceramic products. For non-ferrous metal refining plants, JGC has a robust track record in construction work for nickel and copper refining plants in Japan and other countries that leverage technology knowhow accumulated through abundant project experience in the areas of nuclear power and chemicals. In its manufacturing of various catalysts, fine chemical products, and fine ceramic products for use in petroleum refining and in chemical and environment areas, JGC aggressively develops technologies that contribute to new product and new material development, responding to the expansion of global demand. JGC has experience in a broad range of social infrastructure fields that support daily lives and enable people to enjoy increased prosperity. It has long and extensively provided EPC services for pharmaceutical plants, R&D facilities, hospitals and other facilities in the life sciences field, mainly in Japan but also overseas including for overseas owners. 6 Oil & Gas Gas Processing LNG The consumption of natural gas, which has the lowest CO2 emissions per unit of heating value among fossil fuels, and allows for stable wide-area supply over pipeline networks, is significantly growing worldwide due to the expansion of electricity demand driven by economic advances in emerging countries. Additionally, natural gas use is likely to further expand thanks to advances in shale gas development, mainly in North America. JGC implements construction projects for large-scale gas processing plants throughout the world, leveraging its excellent engineering technology and project management capabilities. Its activities are supporting the global expansion of natural gas usage. Gas Processing Plant (U.A.E.) Petroleum Refining Oil demand is likely to further increase globally as a transportation fuel and petrochemical raw material amid rapid economic advances by emerging countries. JGC is capable of promptly responding to changes in petroleum refining based on its extensive experience of building petroleum refining plants worldwide. It also has substantial experience in the execution of refinery modernization projects involving reinforcing heavy-oil cracking facilities such as FCCs (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) and hydrocrackers, and green field and brown field projects for sulfur-free gasoline and diesel fuel against a backdrop of stricter environmental regulations worldwide. JGC has designed and built liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants that account for over 30% of the world s current total LNG production volume. As a leading LNG plant contractor, it has helped clients succeed in projects by accommodating their needs. It expects growing demand, mainly in Asia, for LNG, which places less burden on the environment and can be consumed in locations far from the production site. In response to this increased demand, development plans for the exploitation of LNG resources in the polar regions that were previously considered too difficult to access and the development of smaller gas fields are being explored. The company is striving to accumulate a variety of technologies that can expand LNG extraction, such as the utilization of modular construction for facilities, the development of project execution technologies for regions with extreme cold weather, and the practical use of FLNG.
