2 WaStop is a unique patented check valve that stops backflow in drains. WaStop gives reliable protection against infiltration of the pipeline by insects, small animals, flotsam and gases, especially when water levels are high. It can be installed in minutes into new and existing drains or manholes. The elastomer membrane design means there is only one moving part. The valve is self-cleansing ensuring it will not block, which results in low maintenance and therefore low operation costs. The WaStop check valve also boasts one of the lowest head losses on the market which reduces the risk of damming. WaStop check valve is available in dimensions from mm, however, larger or customised dimensions can be manufactured on request. Design Specifications D9.1 Wastop DRAINAGE PG 2 Manufactured using stainless steel EN /AISI 316. PVC, HDPE and SS 304 versions are also available. A range of dimensions available, from 75 to 1800 mm (depending on the body, material). Larger or customised dimensions can be manufactured for individual requirements. The flexible membrane design means there is only one moving part. The membrane flexibility can be varied, according to the required function. (E.g. To stop odours, a softer elastomer for easier opening and closing is used). Can be designed to withstand up to 8 m back pressure. The unit can be installed either horizontally or vertically and either at an inlet or outlet. Standard anchors and a seal are included for installation in drains. Flanging is standard on SS units from DN1000 and above. Custom flanging available on request. Joint connections are available for purchase upon request. CE Approved CE-approved models from mm are tested and approved for up to five meters back pressure. Function The WaStop check valve consists of just two parts a elastomer membrane and a pipe. The function is simple pressure from flow in the normal flow direction causes the valve to open just enough to allow the flow through. If there is no flow through the pipe, the valve closes. The valve also closes if there is negative pressure or backflow. Fig. 1 Valve opens with normal flow and closes with backflow Maintenance Occasional maintenance, rinsing and checking for the valve is recommended. Care should be taken if high pressure flushing is used. WaStop should be installed in a position that enables inspection, for example, in close proximity to a manhole. Low Head Loss WaStop check valve has the lowest head loss in the market, reducing the damming in the drainage system. Flow tests are conducted by Vattenfall Utveckling AB. 3 Application Storm Water and Waste Water Outfalls Protect waste and surface water drains from the high water levels of rivers, lakes and the sea, by installing a WaStop check valve in an outfall. Odour Control The discharge of aggressive gases from older sewage systems can be a major problem in built up areas allowing odours to pass through drains on street level. By installing WaStop, discharge can be stopped or redirected to a less sensitive area. Softer versions of the membrane are available specifically for this purpose. Fig. 2 Wingwall installation at Mana, Porirua Basement Flooding Installing a WaStop check valve in a buildings drainage system or basement can protect the property from flooding. Installation time and costs can be kept to a minimum by installing the unit in an existing drainage system. Pump Stations Back flow in pump stations caused by overflow outlets is avoided when a WaStop check valve is installed. Wetlands A WaStop will avert the flooding of wetlands or other flood sensitive farmland, by preventing salt water and other unwanted water from forcing back in through an outlet. 6 Installation Options WaStop can be installed at any angle, from vertical to horizontal, at both the inlet and the outlet. The greater the angle, the more efficient the self-rinsing effect. A minimum incline of 1.5% is recommended when installing WaStop in a sewage drain, or 1% for installations in stormwater drains. 7 Case Studies Porirua, New Zealand WaStop DN1300mm Location: Semple St Porirua. Client: Porirua District Council Problem: Due to limited fall in stormwater lines running into the harbour, high tide / heavy rain occurrences would fill the outfall pipes. This led to surface flooding in low lying areas around the city centre. Solution: The 1300 mm flanged WaStop valve installed in a stormwater outfall pipe prevents tidal encroachment into the stormwater system. This allows the full capacity of the pipe system to be used for stormwater retention during high tides. Design: 1300 mm stainless steel WaStop valve with rear nest flange to locate valve in pipe and full face flange to secure valve to pipe end. New Brighton Christchurch, New Zealand WaStop DN600mm Location: Admirals Way, South Shore, New Brighton Christchurch Client: Christchurch City Council Consultant: GHD Problem: Due to earthquake damage a stormwater outfall had sunk below river level causing flooding. Solution: Originally a PVC flap gate was installed however this was unsuccessful due to debris and seaweed causing the flap valve to jam open. Upon discussion with consultants the PVC flap gate was replaced with a WaStop. Design: An 1800 mm manhole chamber was installed 30 metres upstream from the outfall and a 600 mm WaStop was then installed in the pipeline (via the manhole). 8 Thames, New Zealand WaStop DN225-DN600 mm D9.1 Wastop DRAINAGE PG 8 Location: Thames Coromandel Coast Client: Thames Coromandel District Council Problem: High tide occurrences invading stormwater system via coastal outfalls. Being very flat and at sea level parts of Thames and the surrounding coast were subjected to high tides filling the stormwater system and causing flooding. Solution: A number of WaStop valves ranging in size from 225 up to 600 mm have been installed on problematic outfalls and have stopped the ingress of sea water giving the local authorities full use and capacity of their stormwater system. Design: Te Puru Boat Ramp Thames. Malfunctioning flap gate (frame still visible in photo) replaced by an inline WaStop secured to the inner wall of the pipe. Cochrane St Thames. 600 mm WaStop inline and bolted to the end of the pipe. Albert St Thames. 600 mm WaStop installed in end of outfall pipe. New Plymouth, New Zealand WaStop DN1400 Location: New Plymouth Client: New Plymouth District Council Contractor: City Care New Plymouth Problem: High river levels forcing back up into the storm water outfall causing regular flooding. Solution: A DN1400 WaStop was adapted with a special PE flange to suit the DN1600 concrete pipe. The WaStop was installed smoothly and quickly using a digger to lower it into position. Design: DN1400 WaStop with PE adapting flange installed in a strom water outfall.
