2013 San Francisco Bay Area National Parks Science and Natural Resources Symposium Application of data from the Invasive Species Early Detection Program of the San Francisco Bay Area Inventory and Monitoring Program Eric Wrubel and Robert Steers
The Invasive Species Early Detection program (ISED) completed its first fiveyear survey cycle of all roads and trails in Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA) in The first survey cycle will be completed at Point Reyes National Seashore (PORE) in ,000+ occurrences in GOGA & PORE combined 148 priority ED invasive plant species. Resulting ISED data has a numerous possible applications for Landscapescale analyses and prioritization.
Landscape-scale applications for ISED data Metapopulation Assessment Supports integrated parkwide weed management strategy Is a site at or near an invasion front? Are satellite populations present at a site? Are there patches of vulnerable habitat at a site? Stipa manicata
Habitat invasibility analysis Are certain species are more likely to invade certain habitats? Are certain habitats more likely to be invaded? Water Urban Sand Wetland Grassland/Open Scrub Coastal Scrub Xeric Chaparral Exotic Forest Upland Forests/Woodlands Riparian Forests/Woodlands Number of occurrences by habitat type (raw data)
Prioritization WHIPPET GIS tool prioritizes populations for eradication based on: Impact Invasiveness feasibility of eradication Can be used to set parkwide priorities for eradication of specific ISED populations
Number of ED occurrences Pathway analysis Number of ED occurrences is related to distance from inhabited buildings (preliminary, GOGA). Distance from Buildings (m)
Occurrences per per mile Total occurrences (raw data) Pathway analysis Number of ED occurrences per mile is greater along paved roads (Preliminary, GOGA) Dirt Road Trails Paved Road Road/trail type Occurrences per mile Total occurrences
Risk Analysis* Analysis Information on species traits Matching species traits to suitable habitats Estimating exposure Surveys of current distribution and abundance *Stohlgren & Schnasse Risk Analysis for Biological Hazards: What We Need to Know about Invasive Species. Risk Analysis, Vol. 26:1. Cal-IPC plant assessment form
Risk Analysis* Analysis Information on species traits Matching species traits to suitable habitats Estimating exposure Surveys of current distribution and abundance Risk Characterization Estimates of the potential distribution and abundance Estimates of the potential rate of spread Probable risks, impacts, and costs Risk Management Containment potential and costs CalWeedMapper suitable range projection for Dittrichia graveolens.
