5 WHY IS SUPERSMART IMPORTANT? Supermarkets require up to 4% of all electricity used in Europe. Supermarkets cause about 1% of the global warming in Europe. Less energy demand less global warming Higher energy efficiency and environmentally friendly solutions could reduce these problems. We will make supermarkets start using efficient heating and cooling solutions QUICKLY so that less harm is done to the environment. 5

6 MAIN OBJECTIVES 1. Remove non-technological barriers to efficient heating & cooling in the European food retail sector 2. Raise the expertise level for energy-friendly supermarkets among technical and non-technical staff members, through promotion and training 3. Support the introduction of a new EU Ecolabel for food retail stores, by developing draft criteria for such a label 6

7 PROJECT STRUCTURE WP2: REMOVING NON-TECHNOLOGICAL MARKET BARRIERS 1. Find and remove barriers to SuperSmart supermarkets 2. Make information, training material and training sessions about efficient heating and cooling solutions 3. Make supermarkets able to achieve the future label WP3: DEVELOPMENT OF EU ECOLABEL 1. Make a proposal for an EU Ecolabel for supermarkets 2. Make two reports to back up the proposal 3. Suggest how the label could be developed together with project partners WP4: COMMUNICATION, PROMOTION & DISSEMINATION 1. Ensure good communication with everyone involved, including non-project partners 2. Spread information about SuperSmart 3. Tell the public about the project results 7

17 RESULTS FOR DEFINITION AND SCOPE Definition: Food retail stores include all store formats in the retail trade with at least 50% of annual turnover for groceries, except those specifically excluded. 20 RESULTS OF LIFE CYCLE STUDIES Case study #1: Supermarket in the UK opened in 2010, data from 2012 single-storey building construction with steel structure, 1824 m 2 sales area condensing gas boiler, indirect R404A/CO 2 refrigeration units use stage: highest impact along the life span of the building (91 %) manufacturing of the building materials responsible for 9 % Primary energy consumption of the supermarket (life span 15 years) Primary energy consumption in the use stage 20

21 RESULTS OF LIFE CYCLE STUDIES Case study #2: Food discounter in Germany opened in 2010, data from 2012 stand-alone, single-storey building with timber frame, 1103 m 2 sales area Nearly Zero Energy Building, transcritical CO 2 packs, heat recovery, heat pump impact of the manufacturing stage is more pronounced (23%) due to low energy consumption in the use stage high embodied primary energy and GWP of the roof construction keep the manufacturing stage s primary energy consumption and GWP values high Primary energy consumption of the food discounter (life span 15 years) Primary energy consumption in the use stage 21

23 RESULTS OF LIFE CYCLE STUDIES Best practices related to LCA INSTALLATIONS AND FACILITIES: Priority Best Practice Use of natural refrigerants Reduction of refrigerant charge and leakages High efficiency equipment Monitoring and management systems Renewable energy systems LIFE SERVICE Priority Best Practice Accomplish design building s life span (min. 50 years) BUILDING FEATURES: Priority Best Practice Reduce roof surfaces Avoid stand-alone buildings in order to reduce the surface of outer enclosures and dispense with roofs Have preference for non-asphalt-based materials, (such as EPDM) Reduce height of spaces Contribute to natural lighting Environmentally friendly materials Reduce thermal loads from the outside focus for EU Ecolabel criteria to be developed within the SuperSmart project 23

25 PROCEDURE/STEPS FOR CRITERIA DEVELOPMENT SuperSmart partners define draft criteria and draft compliance verifications for the EU Ecolabel for food retail stores Basis: Existing criteria of national type I ecolabel (Ecolabel Regulation, Article 11) LCA analysis (Ecolabel Regulation, Article 6) Recommendations from a majority of experts Aim: Criteria are applicable in whole of Europe Compliance verifications are applicable in whole of Europe Proposals are discussed with supermarket stakeholders at SuperSmart workshops and via surveys 25

27 DRAFT CRITERIA ON HVAC&R Result of 3 rd SuperSmart workshop in October nd survey Criterion 1: Refrigerants Focus on use of halogen-free refrigerants (different percentages for new vs. existing, centralized units vs. decentralized plug-in equipment) Criterion 2: Energy Efficiency of the Refrigeration System Reduction in key energy efficiency index (differentiation between new and old units) Evaporation temperature of the refrigeration unit Active control of high pressure and evaporation pressure high efficiency equipment (expansion valves, internal heat exchanger) Criterion 3: Heat Recovery Installation fitted Heat transfer capacity of the installation for utilizing waste heat 27
