1 China Newsletter May 2009 Alberta China Office (ACO) - An Overseas Representative Office of the Alberta Government albertabeijing@international.gc.ca Fax: Website: Although not a National holiday, the Dragon Boat Festival is known as Double Fifth Day, as it falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, (May 28 th this year.) The traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival, Zong zi, is a glutinous rice ball wrapped in corn leaves with a filling. The fillings can be egg, beans, dates, fruits, sweet potato, walnuts, mushrooms, meat, or a combination of them and are generally steamed. Dragon Boat races are the most exciting part of the festival and draw in crowds of spectators. Dragon Boats are generally brightly painted and decorated canoes. The boats range anywhere from 40 to 100 feet in length. The heads are shaped like openmouthed dragons, while the sterns end with a scaly tail. The length of the boats varies depending on the number of rowers. Up to 80 rowers can power the boat. 2 2 nd Group of MHRSS (Ministry Human Resources Social Security) trainees at NAIT The training of the second group from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security was completed on April 4, 2009 and was a success. A total of 12 automotive and 18 welding instructors took part in the training, held at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) for three weeks. These three weeks represented Phase II of the program. Phase I was a one week training session on Pedagogy in Vocational Training, which they previously received last summer in China. During the three weeks, the trainees were exposed to NAIT s hands-on delivery model. In addition, they visited various labs and shops of related programs such as Heavy Duty Mechanics, Instrumentation, Millwright, Power Engineering and Pipefitting. 3 Western Shandong Outreach April The picture was taken in Yankuang Cathay Coal Chemicals Co., Ltd with part of the delegation. The Coastal cities of Shandong are familiar to most Alberta business and government agencies; however, western Shandong is still regarded as a remote and developing area. In order to promote western Shandong the Shandong Foreign Affairs Office has organized this outreach to Tengzhou, Zaozhuang and Linyi from April David and Sophia were invited to join the orientation trip along with the representatives from UNIDO (United Nations International Development Organizations), the Ontario office, the Quebec office, the Institute of International Cooperation in Brazil and the Government of South Australia. During the visit the delegation met with local industries in coal chemical power sectors. In Tengzhou the delegation visited Yankuang Cathay Coal Chemicals Co., Ltd. The company has a total investment of RMB2.7 billion. It is jointly funded by Yankuang Group and Cathay Coal Chemical Holding Co., Ltd. from the United States. It has a capacity of 240,000 t/a methanol and 200,000 t/a acetic acid. This project is a pilot project for China's coal chemical industry which integrates the new water coal slurry gasification, clean coal gas and methanol production. And if successful, will be duplicated in other plants in China.) New Energy Phoenix Energy Company is a share-holding company with four investors; the ENN group, Shandong Tengzhou Chenlong Energy Sources Group Co., Ltd, Lenovo group and China Oceanwide. The plant is still under construction and is estimated to be finished by July The plant will produce methanol by water coal slurry gasification. 3

4 Huadian Power International Corporation Limited is one of the largest Independent Power Producers in China. The Company was incorporated in Jinan, Shandong Province, PRC and by June 30, 2008, the total installed capacity was 22,335.2 MW. Since June 28, 1994 it has primarily engaged in the construction and operation of power plants and other businesses related to power generation. During the trip, we toured the Shiliquan plant with total installed capacity of 740 MW. In this plant, we noticed they are using wheat straws to generate power. Linyi is located in the middle of Beijing and Shanghai and is famous for its plywood manufacturing and trade. There are eight main industries in Linyi, machinery, food processing, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, building material, textile, tourism and logistics. Linyi's export value amounted to 42 billion USD in The top exports are food, fiberboard, machinery and textile. Linyi's major investment is with the Middle East, Africa, Russia and Southeast Asia. As a wrap-up of the trip, the delegation took the opportunity to visit the lumber trading market and visited one of the plywood manufacturers.
