Institute of Applied Data Analytics Formerly known as UBD IBM Centre 10 Staff Members Achievements Past Projects, more than 30 high-impact research papers published & 11 patents filed Facilities include Bluegene /P Supercomputer (1 Rack System) 2 High-End Graphics Workstations ( Each having 256 GB RAM) Several machines having 32 GB RAM
Past Projects
Weather Model Configuration for Brunei Model Details - Three 2-way nests at and 1.5 km horizontal resolution focused on Brunei. Temporal resolution of 10 minutes vertical levels. - Using high resolution SRTM topography data. Computing Platform 1-rack BG/P (1024 nodes) Each compute node with GHz containing 2GB (13.9 TF peak) Potential Impact To be used for weather forecasting (can be used for improving efficiency of weather sensitive operations), coupled weather-flood (disaster management), weather-wind models (renewable energy forecasting and eventual integration with grid). 5
Deep Thunder + FloodSim for Flood Forecasting Operational Weather forecasting: Using Deep Thunder once daily for high resolution forecasting for next 48 hour period at a spatial resolution of 1.5 km and temporal resolution of 10 minutes Deep Thunder: Weather Model Flood forecasting: Flood model using SRTM 90m (coarsegrained) data, integrated with 1.5km weather output from Deep Thunder Lead time of 48 hours at 90 m spatial resolution and temporal resolution of weather forecast (10 min) FloodSim: Hydrology Model Water accumulation regions for 2009 shown (calibration with ground truth / data required) Potential Impact: Improved disaster management.
Climate (Regional) Modeling for Brunei / Borneo Objective : To perform regional climate simulation of Borneo rainforests one of worlds most pristine tropical rainforests, to capture its regional climate variability and predict the future climate of the region. Model Details Outer Domain: 30km x 30km horizontal with 30 vertical levels. Inner Domain : 10km x 10km horizontal with 30 vertical levels. Potential Impact Ecology: Carbon cycle of rainforest, effects of deforestation on rainfall patterns, frequency and intensity of extremes events Monsoon : Monsoon variability, El-Nino and other large scale phenomenon. Sea Level: Sea level increase and its impact.
Crop Modeling: Agrometeorology for Rice / Paddy Yield in Brunei Multifaceted solution required for increasing yield e.g. Soil treatment. Identify appropriate rice variety. Improved crop lifecycle management. Use agrometeorology for improved crop lifecycle management. Help with making decisions on best time to plant rice crops by using long term (6 month) weather model. Help irrigation planning using short term (2 days to 7 days) weather model. Advance alerts on weather conditions conducive to pests, disease. Potential Impact Increased rice yields.
Agro-meteorology: Collaboration with MIPR Water levels during rice cycle for transplanting system Stage Water Level (Required) Rotovation 5 cm Transplanting 3 cm 7 days after transplant 5 cm days before harvesting Drain Conditions favorable for spread of major paddy diseases Rice Disease Relative Humidity Temperature Leaf and Panicle Blast 90% and above o C Sheath Blight 96% -100% o C Deep thunder weather forecast for irrigation planning, disease forecasting. Stage Water Level (Required) Water Level (Estimate) Temperature Humidity Water from Irrigation Rotovation 5 cm 4 cm o C 85% - 88% 10 M Cu ft. Transplanting 3 cm 4 cm o C 84% -89% - 10 M Cu ft. 7 days after transplant days to harvesting Panicle blast condition. 5 cm 5 cm o C 85% -88% 0 M Cu ft. Drain 3cm o C 89% -92% - 30 M Cu ft Cell with blue fill are part of proposed UI. Not Implemented yet. Workshop & discussions with MIPR Agriculture team. MIPR has provided data on water requirement for paddy. Also conditions for two diseases provided. User interface requirements and timeline discussions in progress.
Energy Management and Optimization: The KBFSC Project Challenges Location deep in the pristine Borneo forests. No electric grid. Use of diesel generators (DG) Pollution of the pristine ecosystem, limited power supply for researchers. Technologies Use of smart meters for monitoring power consumption of appliances. Use novel appliance scheduling techniques and battery storage to improve DG efficiencies. Upgradation of energy inefficient appliances. Motion activated systems. Renewables for reducing dependence on DG and for renewables (dispatch) research. Potential Impact Greening KBFSC: Less pollution of pristine Borneo ecosystem. Energy Efficient Technology Development: Micro-grid research platform for energy efficiency technologies and renewables integration.
Renewables: Short Term Wind Energy Forecast and Power Dispatch Modeling Wake model Terrain model DT output NOVELTY High resolution (1Km 1Km) weather forecast from 15 min to 48 hours- helps in easy integration of renewable Uses wake modeling, terrain modeling incorporating 3D effects for high accuracy forecasting and siting. Potential Impact Integration of renewables: Develop a high accuracy wind forecasting system. Farm 3D Micrositing: 3D models in novel micrositing algorithms for space constrained sites.
Renewables: 3-Dimensional Siting Optimization Problem: Wind-sites in Brunei and many parts of the world are moderate and space-constrained Approach: Maximize the wind energy generation from the 3D resource through siting optimization. Takes into account 3D wake effects, interference between turbines etc. Potential Impact Using 3D modeling with wake effects etc lead to a 54% more efficient solution.
Capacity Building Initiatives Research Collaboration: - On-site visits by IBM researchers - Bruneians visit IBM labs (India, US, Brazil) - IBM Co-advisors for PhD students - IBM Mentors & Coaches for staff - Apprenticeship on-the-job coaching for students staff (KBFSC project) - Video & audio conference meetings - Stakeholder officers affiliated w/ Centre - Course guest lectures, course content - Joint papers, patents, coaching on presentation Stakeholder Events, Visibility: - Workshops: HPC, Weather, Hydrology, River Modeling, Oil & Gas, Energy efficiency, Renewables - Global Sustainability Summer School HPC Summer School planned UBD IBM Featured in talks in topuniversities, conferences in Australia, US, Canada, India, Singapore
