LED Lighting Applications What Works & Why It Was Chosen Presenter Information Randall S. Johnson, LC President US Lamp, Inc. Green Bay, WI Presenter Information Kerm King Energy Manager School District of La Crosse La Crosse, WI
Presenter Information Don Keck Buildings and Grounds Manager Stevens Point Area Public Schools District Stevens Point, WI Agenda Lighting Trends LED as a technology Why choose LED over other lighting? Examples and strategies LED advantages High Efficacy Fixtures can achieve LPW efficacies 5 10 LPW for incandescent Longevity Useful life of 25,000 to >100,000 hrs <1,000 for incandescent Environmentally Friendly No hazardous materials ex: mercury vapor in CFL lamps 2
Reasons to choose LED Desire to be Green Reducing energy, not financially driven Reducing pollution-good for the planet To be on the Cutting Edge Federal, State, Utility grants to help with First Cost Why do we light a space? To provide the correct seeing environment to properly perform your activity Create an aesthetic, pleasing space Provide a safe environment NOT to save energy-lighting consumes energy! Industry Trends for LED Light Source Efficacy LPW
LED s or SSL: Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are solid-state semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy directly into visible light Heart of an LED is composed of combinations of these elements, often called a die or chip Actual junction of the elements is called the P/N junction Where is LED lighting headed? Current products are at LPW-depending on category Everyone is making LED products-pick vendors wisely! Strong emphasis on increasing efficiency Cree has 305 LPW in the lab Many good point source products Industry push to replace general lighting products- most product improvement is evolving here LightFair International has >500 manufacturers - all but a handful display LED products DLC (Design Lights Consortium) MA-Clearing House for rebates Summer of ,000 LED products 9,403 TLED bulbs listed October of ,709 LED products 12,893 TLED bulbs listed LED Product Categories T8 bulb retrofits Fluorescent fixture replacements Outdoor wall pack fixtures Parking lot fixtures Task lighting Landscape lighting Flood and spotlight fixtures Canopy lighting Cooler/Freezer lighting Retail store lighting sending ads to iphone 4
Critical issue with LED Performance- Heat dissipation LED s produce heat into circuit board Heat management and removal is critical to proper performance and life ratings 50,000 hr. rating in laboratory setting-may be considerably shorter if heat is not addressed LED s work better, in colder ambient temps. Proper fixture design must address heat removal Be careful of new product with 5 or 10 year warranties from 2 year old companies! Make sure you select the right equipment for the right application! LED T8 Retrofit Tubes: Generation 3, 4, 5, 6 Improvements: Lower watts (Gen 3) External driver (Gen 4) White plastic tube (Gen 3 & 4) Equivalent to 32-w T8 (Gen 4) DLC (Design Lights Consortium) rated (Gen 4 & 5) Key to rebates Driven by existing T8 Instant-Start ballast (Gen 5) Simple tube replacement Above bulb attributes in glass(gen 6) 5
Gym night light application TLED with ballasts Retrofit: Incandescent Sockets Accent Lighting For highlighting artwork or merchandise Auditoriums and Atriums Retrofit with directional LED bulbs - R, BR, PAR or MRbulbs Or, consider LED track heads Select wattages and beam spreads that provide the needed light on target LED Retrofit Kits - Swing Up Kit For 2x4 recessed troffers 4,000 Lumens at 36watts 112 LPW LM 70 = 70,000 hrs CRI = K,4000K, 5000K 5 year warranty DLC Listed Philips EvoKit LED Retrofit 6
Retrofit: Reflectors Fluorescent kits available Example: 2x2 w/2, U-tubes to 2 or 3, 17-w T8 tubes Improve troffer efficiency Relocate tubes for max performance Perform trial installation Evaluate cost of retrofit fixtures versus replacement - Alternative could be LED panels or retro kits Retrofit or Redesign? Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of the existing lighting system. A retrofit may replace lamps, ballasts, or fixtures but must not drastically change the overall lighting function. A redesign will involve a whole new lighting system, often with quite different components and performance characteristics than the original. The cost of a lighting system improvement is often proportional to its permanence! Redesign-HID to HIF T5HO 7
Replace Metal Halide Fixtures with HB Fluorescent/LED Gyms, warehouses, manufacturing High-Bay fluorescent-now LED Typical: 400-w MH to 6-L Super T8 or 4-L T5HO, shifting to LED solutions-sometimes! What is your decision based on? Payback? About 50% savings, but determine footcandles needed! More with controls-programmable Can turn off & back on with no delay-dimmable Fixture mounted PIR sensors SSL Troffers: A Better Option? Higher-quality, higher efficiency, similar-cost to retrofit kits or LED tubes Classrooms, Libraries, Offices, Hallways Potential advantages of SSL fixtures Optical Thermal Electrical School District of La Crosse Replacing w Mercury recessed hallway cans with LED Par lamps. (125 system watts) Challenge was finding equivalent light. Tried CFL s with poor results. Challenge of 277v. Line voltage. Identified product in 19w Par 38, 277v., 4100K Great results: 81% energy reduction 2.3 year payback Great light coverage vs. Mercury 8
School District of La Crosse Logan H. S. Pool Energy hog with w MH, 2-400w MH Light was not evenly distributed across the water Maintenance issues to access pool fixtures Solution: Installed 253w High Temp LED Fixtures Light was evenly distributed across the water/room Eliminated maintenance bulb issues Side benefit: eliminated bleacher soffit downlights Led the way: 1 year later, local Y did their pool! Logan High School Pool Before w HM After 253w LED School District of La Crosse Recent lighting upgrade at Summit Elementary Utilized Fluorescent in Classrooms, due to first cost and longer payback Utilized 2x2 LED flat panel troffers in hallways Principal called immediately on how great the appearance and quality of light are Other examples: 9
Stevens Point Area Public Schools Started with Special Needs classrooms 2014 Win - Win for everyone Energy savings Color and appearance improvement Controllability (dimming) for student satisfaction Color tuning now available New fixtures provide all available benefits vs. retrofit and only realizing some benefits Now implementing into general classrooms Stevens Point-Special Needs Rooms LED troffers and Lutron dimming for teacher control of light levels Stevens Point Area Public Schools SPASH Fieldhouse: Implemented to highlight activities in space, not for payback purposes. High use facility, frequent community attendance Replaced Metal Halide with LED fixtures Increase FC 300%, increased energy 400 watts total! 120 FC on main court, 70 FC throughout 90% of burn time, running at 1/3 light level 12 zones of control Realizing control savings by dimming 10
SPASH Fieldhouse Stevens Point Area Public Schools- Other Benefits User Satisfaction Teachers, students, enjoy quality of light Control allows users to tailor room to their needs Increased Safety Minimize high lift work to increase safety for maintenance staff Maintenance Benefits: High ceiling stairwell applications-ladder accessible High ceiling gym applications-lift accessible Reduced lighting replacement Outdoor Lighting Use appropriate light sources. Consider white light, especially in low-illuminance conditions or for aesthetic appearance. Put light only where needed. Avoid light pollution (lighting up the sky), and light trespass (lighting neighbors property). Avoid glare from floodlights, wallpacks, dusk-to-dawn units and bright post-top units. Use automatic controls. All off or half off after midnight, for example. All off during daylight hours. Good application for wireless controls. 11
SSL Parking Lot Fixtures Many new designs coming into the market Strong claims (hype) Wide variations in performance DOE GATEWAY Reports can help select best equipment Good application for SSL Consider controls & how easy to add later, when codes may require (ex: bilevel w/sensors) Area Lighting outdoor area canopy parking structure bollard wallpack Examples 12
HS Auditorium Back-LED Front-Incandescent H.S. Auditorium-T8 to LED Fixtures Before After Whsg/Storage: 1000wMH to 190w LED 13
Building Entrance - HPS to LED Before After Controls Why Use Controls? Energy and cost savings (35 50%) Reduce time lighting systems on (hrs-of-use) Dim so no more light than necessary produced (reduce power - kw) Code Requirements State and Federal control mandates Productivity When building occupants control their lighting, they are more productive Lighting quality Match appropriate light level to task Increase visual comfort Security Automatic switching or occupancy sensing 14
Lighting Control Strategies Switching (manual or automatic) Scheduling (lights off when not needed) Tuning (ensures right qty. of light at the task) Daylight Harvesting (responds to changing conditions) Lumen Maintenance (compensates for depreciation) Demand Limiting (sheds or dims lighting at peak times) Demand Response (utility requests to shed load or automatic) Tier 1: Occupancy Sensor Controls Occupancy sensors can save 25%-80% or more in energy costs. Infrared/Ultrasonic/Dual Technology/Microphonic Dimming/Daylighting controls can reduce energy costs and extend lamp life. Use ballasts appropriate for switching to maintain rated lamp life! Wireless controls by several Mfg. Occupancy Sensor Types Infrared (PIR) Ultrasonic Sound Activated Dual Technology infrared + ultrasonic infrared + sound activated occupancy sensor + daylight inhibit 15
Occupancy Sensor: Application Savings Tier 2: Why dim LEDs? Dimming LEDs saves energy 50% dimming = 50% energy savings Added savings to an already efficient source Dimming lowers operating temperatures Extends component life (electronics & phosphor) Double or triple lumen maintenance General dimming benefits Enhance ambiance Space flexibility Improve safety Increased productivity Dimming Performance-Potential LED aesthetic issues: Flicker - The unexpected modulation of light level that is perceptible to the human eye (not always visually seen!) Pop-on - The level the light is at when it is turned off is the level it should return to when it is turned back on Drop-out - The light should only turn off when the switch is turned off. Dead-travel - Adjusting the control without a corresponding change in light level Audible Noise - From control or lamp Popcorn - Multiple lamps on the same control turn on at different times 16
Tier 3: Wireless Occupancy Sensors & Relays Ceiling mounted PIR occupancy sensors that communicate with wall-box unit (or wireless relays) using RF Requires NO hard-wired electricity Ideal for retrofit applications Some units use long-life battery Ideal for dimming applications Others use no battery PV cells in sensor keep capacitor charged Relays operated by RF from sensors Wireless Sensor Advantages Competitive cost to wired sensors Same or better coverage patterns 1/3 or less labor for installation Perfect for hard ceilings and inaccessible areas Can be integrated into more comprehensive building-wide energy management controls Extremely flexible, to build as you go Wireless Exterior Controls Lumewave, Inc. by Echelon ROAM by Acuity Brands wiscape by Hubbell Lighting Wireless Network Manager by The WattStopper LightGrid by GE Lighting Smart nodes with intelligence, photocell functions, and GPS location data Many use software to integrate real time data for: energy monitoring, scheduling, maintenance, control 17
