1 Strategies for supply and disposal in the rural and urban living environment coupled with the transfer of knowledge Dr. Gunnar Hädrich GmbH Cleantech Made in Germany Industry Symposium IC, April 9 th 2013, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia What are we talking about? Example: Disposal of municipal solid waste uncontrolled disposal of municipal solid waste in the environment because of missing disposal infra structure Germany (former GDR, 1990) dumping of municipal solid waste without barriers, treatment or separation [Bundesarchiv, Bild , R. Hirschberger] Cambodia (2013) dumping of municipal solid waste of capital Phnom Penh in a sand/clay dig (incl. cut aquifer)

2 What are we talking about? Germany today - existence of complex recycling, re-utilisation and disposal system to warranty a more environmental friendly disposal Material + energy recycling (resources management) Pre-treatment (e.g. separate material flow management org. waste) Landfill facility (several diff. barriers) incl. emission treatment Sorting and incineration Technical landfilling Resource utilisation What are we talking about? Germany today - existence of complex recycling, re-utilisation and disposal system to warranty a more environmental friendly disposal Material + energy recycling (resources management) Pre-treatment (e.g. separate material flow management org. waste) Landfill facility (several diff. barriers) incl. emission treatment GDP-Proportion on waste disposal Germany < 1 % in 2008 Cambodia ~ 10 % in 2008 Malysia ~ 3 % in % 5% 10% GDP-Proportion 15% 20% [%] 25% GDP-Proportion spend for waste disposal in Germany Necessary GDP-Proportion to finance a similar waste management

3 What are we talking about? Germany today - existence of complex recycling, re-utilisation and disposal system to warranty a more environmental friendly disposal Material + energy recycling (resources management) 1:1-Implementation of German standards not everywhere Pre-treatment immediately (e.g. possible separate material flow management org. waste) But the wish for a clean environment exists Landfill facility (several diff. barriers) incl. emission treatment Answer questions and develop solutions: How should be GDP-Proportion adapted options on and waste how disposal the performance of such option on environmental protection considering of Germanycomplex < 1 % in systems? 2006 CambodiaWhere are available resources ~ 10 % in are 2008 used most effectively? Malysia ~ 3 % in 2011 Technology- but also transfer of knowledge is essential! 0% 5% 10% GDP-Proportion 15% 20% [%] 25% GDP-Proportion spend for waste disoposal in Germany Necessary GDP-Proportion to finance a similar waste management What is GmbH? Founded 1999, registered office in Weimar in Thuringia Since 2001 status as institute at Nationally and internationally active engineering company Intention: development and offer of optimal solutions from ecological and sozio-economical perspective to improve the infrastructure in field of waste, waste water, energy for the individual local situations Currently cooperation with partners from i.a.
