4 The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) was established by law No. 3 of 2009, issued by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. QCC is responsible for the development of Abu Dhabi Emirate s Quality Infrastructure, which enables industry and regulators to ensure that products, systems and personnel can be tested and certified to UAE and International Standards. Products certified by QCC receive the Abu Dhabi Trustmark. The Trustmark is designed to communicate that a product or system conforms to various safety and performance standards that are set by Abu Dhabi regulators. 1- Foreword The QCC Working Group for Plastic Pipes was established in June 2013 with a view to reviewing the available standards for plastic pipes with all standardization levels (International level, Regional level, National level as well as local level). Recommending the use of particular standards for plastic pipes that satisfy Abu Dhabi local requirements and requirements of stakeholders. 2 - Scope This Abu Dhabi Specification recommends the use of particular standards for plastic pipes. It provides information on the QCC Working Group on plastic pipes that recommends the use of BS 6920 standard (Suitability of non-metallic products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption with regard to their effect on the quality of the water) (parts 1, 2, 3 and 4). 3 - Acknowledgements QCC would like to thank the members of the Working Group listed below 3

Since there is no UAE 4

6 standard in this regard, it is proposed that BS 6920 standard will be an effective reference that satisfies the requirements of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in this field. 4.2 Document Review BS This part of BS 6920 specifies requirements for the suitability of non-metallic (Including cementitious) materials and products, and also water fittings and components, pipes and materials used in coating, protection, lining, jointing, Sealing and lubrication, for use in contact with either hot or cold water Intended for human consumption, with regard to their effect on the quality of the water BS This part of BS 6920 describes the preparation of test samples of all types of nonmetallic (including cementitious) materials and products, including water fittings and components, pipes and materials used in coating, protection, lining, jointing, sealing and lubrication, for their suitability for use in contact with water intended for human consumption, with regard to their effect on the quality of the water. This standard does not cover metallic materials and products, unless they will be used in conjunction with a non-metallic material, e.g. coating BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method designed to access the ability of a product to impart a discernible ordure and /or flavor to water intended for human consumption. The method is applicable for most types of non-metallic products used in contact with drinking water.it is not applicable for testing the products specified in the scope of this standard BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method designed to access the ability of multiy-layered hoses (including reinforcement) and pipes to impart a discernible odur or flavor to water intended for human consumption. 5

7 4.2.5 BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method designed to access the ability of flexible hoses (including reinforcement) to impart a discernible odur or flavor to water intended for use in the preparation of food and drinks. It is applicable only to the testing of hoses intended for installation in equipment used for food and drink preparation BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method designed to assess the ability of a product to impart any noticeable colour or turbidity to water intended for human consumption.the method is applicable to all types of non-metallic product used in contact with water intended for human consumption BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method for assessing the ability of a product to promote the multiplication of aerobic aquatic microorganisms in water intended for human consumption. The method is applicable to all types of non-metallic product used in contact with water intended for human consumption BS This part of BS 6920 describes a screening procedure (simple cytotoxicity test) using a mammalian cell line and a leachate from a product. The results of this procedure will assist in the toxicological assessment of the product for use in contact with water intended for human consumption. This procedure is suitable for all non-metallic materials that may be used in contact with water intended for human consumption BS This part of BS 6920 describes the test procedure for assessing the leachability of metals from non-metallic products when used in contact with water intended for human consumption BS

8 This part of BS 6920 describes methods designed to assess the ability of a nonmetallic product to affect hot and boiling water intended for human consumption by imparting a discernible odour or flavour, or any noticeable colour or turbidity. It is also applicable in assessing the leachability in hot or boiling water of metals from nonmetallic products and the extraction from such products of substances that may be of concern to public health. It is not applicable to the test for growth of aquatic microorganisms (see BS ). Products used exclusively in industrial or steam services are excluded BS This part of BS 6920 describes a method for identifying organic chemicals that are amenable to GCMS analysis using the techniques described and which might leach from a product into water intended for human consumption. A method of calculating the concentrations of the organic substances identified is also provided. This part of this British Standard is not applicable to the toxicological evaluation of chemicals. 5 - Executive Summary and Recommendation The QCC Working Group reviewed the British standard BS 6920 (parts 1, 2, 3 and 4) and found that the BS 6920 is a suitable standard to be used as a reference for non-metallic components with regards to their effect on the quality of water. Due to the absence of national standards (UAE Standard) with this regard; the working group recommends that ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization 4 & Metrology) adopts BS 6920 as a national UAE standard.
