3 Our energy sources are going to change significantly in the coming years. The accelerated introduction of renewable energy is associated with stronger price fluctuations and reduced consistency of supply. For further acceleration towards reliability, efficiency and a faster introduction of renewable energy ATEPS offers the following products: Energy Storage Systems The scope of the energy storage systems in recent years has increased substantially. The focus of ATEPS is currently on energy storage combined with local energy production (>100kWp), energy storage combined with charging infrastructure and industrial peak shaving. Ateps also delivers small-scale energy storage (5-40 kwh) for households. Hydrogen Generator Ateps has, in cooperation with partners,developed a highly efficient hydrogen generator. ATEPS mixes the produced HHO-gas into cogeneration systems (CHP s) to reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions. 3

4 About ATEPS Mission ATEPS Nederland BV is a new and growing company in the field of energy storage and energy efficiency. The main objective of ATEPS is to developand market new technologies that accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy system. Staff Jos Theuns Jos Theuns manages ATEPS. Jos has a broad network of suppliers and specialists in Asia and Europe. Spends much time in Asia to improve knowledge and understanding of new battery technologies. His main goals are offering the right solution for the customer/user and not only for the supplier. As such he worked on high energy peak shaving projects with high voltage/high current battery systems including their microprocessor control equipment. Specialties: New battery technologies and their implementation. Peaks shaving and Smart Grid applications EV applications with new lithium battery technologies and super capacitors. Diversified into ESS systems using high power, high capacity Lithium system in combination with high speed DC/DC and DC/AC converters for peak shaving and energy storage. Delivered several systems and working on further improvements for remote monitoring and control of these systems. Jaap Willems Jaap was trained as environmental and innovation manager at Wageningen University -specialization conversion of biomass into energy and valuable flow-. His passion lies with social issues that make a fundamental contribution to the transition towards sustainability. He spent eight years at Royal HaskoningDHV innovative issues of environment, transport andenergy, and then moved to ATEPS, where he currently leads projects in the field of smart energy and smart mobility. Striking examples are electric car-sharing projects in s-hertogenbosch and smart-grid projects at the High TechCampus in Eindhoven. 4

5 Jaap Langius Jaap has been working for six years in the renewable energy sector, the first three years in Ladakh (India) where he was involved with the development and implementation of Micro Hydro Power Units (in the range of 3-30 kw), Photo Voltaic solar panels and hydraulic ram pumps. In Indonesia he became part of the ENDEV (ENergy and DEVelopment) program, a collaboration between the European Union (represented by G.I.Z) and the Indonesian government. Goal of this program was the electrification of disadvantaged (rural) areas by means of hydropower. From technical perspective Jaap enjoys finding smart solutions and properly applying theoretical concepts to get to practical results. Combining different kind of engineering and sharing this knowledge with the team is very rewarding to him too. Since Jaap has been involved in small and medium scale off-grid systems, he has been looking for solutions for electrical storage systems. By joining ATEPS he has found several solutions for this challenge. 5

6 Energy Storage Our energy system is going to change significantly in the coming years. The accelerated introduction of renewable energy is only beneficial with increased energy storage so energy is available on demand. Therefore energy storage is crucial to the success of the transition to a sustainable and reliable energy system. Both the generation and consumption of energy will become more localized issues whereby the existing grid is used to balance power between multiple locations. This provides unique opportunities and solutions for problems such as climate change, geopolitical tensions and future energy insurance. The energy storage system (ESS) of ATEPS can be easily integrated with other intelligent systems. The ESS can be used for: Trade on the imbalance and spot market (APX) Frequency control of the grid Peak shaving Charging large numbers of electric vehicles Energy-neutral neighbourhoods and communities Business models Keeping control of your own energy is profitable. On the large-scale consumption market energy prices differs per quarter of an hour. These fluctuations are between 30 and 60 per MWh, but peaks and valleys far beyond these averages are no exception, certainly not on the imbalance market. Energy storage makes it possible to make profit out of these price fluctuations. 6

7 Besides earning potential in the imbalance and spot market, a user of a storage system can also save by having short-term peaks loads absorbed by the storage system and not through the public network. In other words, the peak load is reduced in the power purchase contract and this may be a substantial saving on the contract value. Such a peak shaving system has been installed to reduce the peak load in a harbour crane delivering 1,2MW during hoisting of containers of up to 42 tons. The third interesting business model is the combination of storage, decentralized energy generation and sale of electricity to electric vehicles users. The Dutch spent a relatively large amount of money on energy for being mobile. In this way, the energy delivered back from the storage system not only goes to the grid when prices are high, but can also be delivered to owners of electric vehicles. The business case for energy storage on households level initially seems more difficult to reach due to the current tariff structure but anticipated changed in this will make these application more economically viable in the near future. For smaller systems, 5 kw (normal home) to 30 kw (large villa) ATEPS focuses on: Holiday or remote homes - where connection to the public grid is not possible. The combination of decentralized generation (co-generation, solar and / or wind) and energy storage provide a reliable small-scale energy supply. Energy storage in the district - For this application the network administrators (DSO s) are our main customers. 7

8 Industrial Energy Storage Systems ATEPS focusses and builds large ESS application that are especially designed for fast charging and discharging applications. These systems use Lithium batteries that have a high round-trip efficiency and are able to diver high current. In combination with equally powerful inverters, these systems can be charged in 90 minutes while a discharge in minutes will help in harvesting the best possible reward when selling to energy exchanges or unbalance markets. These systems are fully modular and use battery modules that are build in conformance to the standard 19 dimensions. These are combined in racks and multiple racks are combined into larger systems that can be well over 1MW in a single 40 feet container. For the inverters, industrial bi-directional inverters are used that are able to deliver the required power without distortion to the grid. Being bi-directional, these inverters can also charge the batteries during times that the energy prices are low or negative, adding to the earning potential of the ESS application. Although primarily designed for on-grid applications, these systems can be easily modified for off-grid application. Islands, remote industrial sites and other applications can now be powered by stored solar energy so the use of diesel generators can be minimized. This reduces the cost of electricity and at the same time the noise and smell of running diesel generators is eliminated. 8

10 Home Storage Systems The private storage and use of energy generated by solar panels is of great interest for many. Press releases appear almost daily that must convince the user of the potential of such systems. Indeed, it sounds beautiful, save your own solar energy to use this during the evening and the night and thus be completely independent of the energy companies. However, the practice is more stubborn; unfortunately a large part of the population lives in areas which do not have a 100% sun-warranty. Bridging long periods with little or no sun, requires considerable battery pack and even then the user must often be willing to make concessions to the consumption of electric energy. Does this mean that storing solar energy is not a good idea? No, certainly not, but there must be a well-founded calculation to avoid surprises and disappointments. ATEPS, professionals in energy, uses a number of computational models to look at the possibilities. In these your own consumption, output of the solar panels and peak loads are some of the inputs that are required. The batteries used by ATEPS for its home storage system are the same battery modules as used for its large systems that can store 1MWh and more energy. The modular design of the system makes it possible to connect multiple batteries in parallel to expand the capacity and thereby the autonomy. 10

11 HHO Systems & Applications HHO for CHP s ATEPS Hydrogen Generator In cooperation with a number of partners ATEPS has develop a high-yield electrolyser. Many business models for electrolysers are still dependant of governmental support. The transition towards the so called hydrogen economy has a large number of technical and societal challenges like the compression, storage and distribution of hydrogen. ATEPS delivers his contribution with the development of a high-yield electrolyser. The business focus of ATEPS has been concentrated on the following products: ATEPS Combustion Accelerator System (CAS) Injection of HHO-gas (brown-gas) into Combined Heat and Power systems (CHP s) Power-2-gas Hydrogen production by surpluss of wind-energy Hydrogen for fuel stations Driving on hydrogen ATEPS Combustion Accellerator System (CAS) With the high-yield electrolyser ATEPS has developed the so called ATEPS Combustion Accellerator System (CAS). The AT- EPS CAS produces a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas, HHO-gas or Brown-gas. Injection of this HHO-gas with the right amount into the manifold (air-inlet) of a CHP, causes an improvement of the burning process in the CHP. This results in lower fuel consumption and shift from harmful emissions towards less harmful emissions. What can you expect from us? Each CHP has its own specifications and own field of application. The first step is to analyse these specifications and make a good description about the field of application. Both to determine the optimal amount of hydrogen needed to have the best results on fuel consumption and emission improvement. The next step is to test the CHP in combination with a (test) electrolyser and analyse the results. With these two steps ATEPS determines the specifications of the electrolyser to deliver the optimum unit. 11

12 One of the characteristics of petrol or natural- and bio gas is the low flame velocity. Because of the slow flame velocity, the burning process within the cylinder is not optimal and not complete. By injecting small amounts of the HHO-gas into the manifold, the burning process of the primary fuel is faster and more complete. This results in a higher (electrical) efficiency of the CHP. Positive side-effect is an improvement of the emissions (NOx, CO, CxHy, PM10). Power-2-gas The high efficiency of the hydrogen generator is useful in Power-2 gas applications. Wind turbines only produce electricity when the wind blows and delivers it to the grid without considering the actual need for power on the grid. At times of low feed-in prices, it is more attractive for the windmill owner to convert the electricity into hydrogen, instead of selling this electricity at low prices. Depending on the local situation, the hydrogen can be stored, mixed into the natural gas network or re-formed to natural gas. Hydrogen for fuel stations In addition to the higher efficiency, these hydrogen generators produce H 2 with a pressure of up to 30 bar. Normal hydrogen generators operate with a pressure of up to 4 bar. For the use of hydrogen in mobility, in which the compression of hydrogen is essential, this is a great advantage. 12

13 Other applications The products of ATEPS are also suitable for other applications such as: Electrical transport Battery technology is ideal for the electrification of vehicles or vessels. Since passenger vehicles are already widely present in electrical variants, ATEPS focus is on specialty vehicles and vessels/boats. Accommodations ATEPS works with several suppliers of solar panels and inverters and therefore has developed turn-key solutions for a sustainable energy supply for holiday and outhouses. Production of high-purity hydrogen The hydrogen generator of ATEPS can produce pure hydrogen on location. Pure hydrogen is among other things necessary for the production of semiconductors, hydrogenation reactions such as used in the production of fats and oils, etc. HHO gas for metalworking The ATEPS CAS produces a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen (HHO gas). This gas can be used by a cutting torch in high-quality metal working. Furthermore, this application is cheaper than the use of hydro-propane burners and there are fewer harmful emissions during the production process. Clean Burning engines The HHO gas can also be used to clean internal combustion engines. A minute session whereby HHO is injected will burn away excessive carbon deposits from the valve stems and other areas. 13
