2 1221 SPOFFORD 1221 Spofford is a proposal for a mixed use development using a modular construction system. Units are prefabricated off-site and plugged into a site-erected steel framework. Interior levels are omitted from the frame to provide daylight penetration and extra public space on the ground. This, coupled with occupiable rooftops, creates an accessible outdoor area greater than the site footprint. Designed in collaboration with David Hupp.
3 1221 CONTD. PRE-K SKIN Light but rigid modules allow for a primary steel system that is correspondingly lightweight. The programmatic bars are varied, but all critical points fall on a 30 x 40 x 13 threedimensional grid to ensure a continuity of structural, egress and MEP systems. MICROHOUSING OFFICE RESTAURANT GROCERY & RETAIL PERFORMANCE MASSING WINTER SOLSTICE 9AM STRUCTURE 12PM Modules are prefabricated in flat-pack assemblies and trucked to the site. Single and double-wide units accommodate the residential and commercial program, while the performance space and grocery use the prefab panels in larger assemblies. Elbow units allow angled segments, adding variation without breaking up interior corridors or MEP runs. GROUND SPRING EQUINOX 3PM 9AM 12PM 3PM MIRCHOUSING LEVEL 5 PLAN SUMMER SOLSTICE 9AM COMMUNITY CENTER SOLAR RADIATION (BTU/ft ²) OFFICE Thin, east-west running program tubes maximize the potential for daylighting and passive ventilation. The double-skin shading system on the south-facing glass is optimized to control solar heat gain with louvers and frit. 12PM 3PM
4 BROADSIDE Inspired by the structural experiments of Robert Le Ricolais and Kenneth Snelson, Broadside is a tensegrity construct cantilevered over Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo, California. The program a restaurant and visitor s center is laid out along a horizontal axis three stories above ground, encased by four compression rings and a network of tension cables. This main arm is hung from a buttressed tower and fixed in place by another web of cables. Broadside was conceived using the 1/10 = 1 model as the primary design tool. The structure was developed by studying the effects of physical forces (pushing, pulling, shaking, hanging) on the model, with structural members added, reinforced or removed until a sturdy equilibrium could be reached. 5 THINK/TANK 54 JEFF Water is an integral part of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Infrastructure, industry, public health, art, recreation, and recent flooding in Grand Rapids are all tied intimately to the water system. Our adaptive reuse proposal for the natural history museum at 54 Jefferson uses the hydrological cycle as a medium to tell the story of the city, highlighting issues that connect Grand Rapids to the region and the global situation at large. biofiltration swale existing Kent County steam connection flood el: -6 el: -4 el: -2 el: 0 channel Melt Freeze Condense Evaporate Water is the center of focus for the exhibits and research conducted on site, and is also experienced viscerally. Rainwater and snowmelt is harvested from the roof by the operable whale, and is released to indoor flood channels, producing a meteorological gauge in a constant state of flux. Alongside this variable system is one unaffected by the exterior climate - three glass vitrines contain a microcosmic hydrological cycle that lets visitors experience water in its three states: solid, liquid and vapor. Designed and modeled in collaboration with Cal Poly Professor Jeff Ponitz dba VERT Studio. Renderings by Matt Catrow, diagrams by Jeff Ponitz.
6 RONX 1 Bronx 1 is a 500,000² ft intervention to the ailing Hunt s Point neighborhood in the South Bronx. As a counterpoint to the maligned midcentury housing projects typical of the area, Bronx 1 aims to create a self-supporting seedling community to spark interest and investment in the area. Contained in the project are various tiers of affordable housing, commercial space, performance areas, food infrastructure, and dining. These diverse programs are stratified, creating a network of interiors linked by terraces and walkways. A south-facing double skin system controls heat gain and daylighting, and its adjustable mounting system allows variety in the panel sizes without the need for extensive design coordination. Selected for Cal Poly s Third Year Best of Show review
