Craig Venter Institute (JCVI): Labs, and in particular genomic-focused ones, traditionally consume large quantities of energy to both run energy intensive scientific equipment and for heating and cooling. The new J. Craig Venter Institute features all of the latest design and construction elements, exceeding LEED Platinum certification requirements in a state-of-the-art, ultra-green, highly adaptable lab building. Designed by ZGF Architects, the JCVI building incorporates all typical wet and dry services found in biology labs and is one of the first, true net-zero energy biological labs in the world, generating 100% of its power on site. Other sustainable elements incorporated into the building include: natural day lighting and views, natural ventilation/passive cooling, a 90,000 gallon rainwater harvesting system reduces City water demand by two-thirds, heating and cooling with thermal energy storage consumes 80% less energy than traditional heating/cooling, native low-water landscaping, use of regional materials, green roofs, recycled content and sustainably harvested wood. Founded by J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., the JCVI is a not-for-profit genomic research institute engaged in some of the most exciting areas of genomic research including: human genomic sequencing and analysis, synthetic genomics and environmental genomics. The building is a unique design that will meld the environmental philosophies of our genomics research with the sustainability goals that I believe must be part of all of our lives. (J.
