21 Conclusions Interest for unconventional oil resources is growing rapidly Improved new and even future technologies are needed to extract this unconventional oil in a safe, clean and profitable manner. Research on extra heavy oil and bitumen in the nineties has lead us to develop major projects which will represent 20% of our production in the first half of next decade Currently Total is developing R&D on oil shale processes Total is seriously evaluating oil shale as a target for sustainable future projects.
