2 Monday 2/27/ :00:00 AM 12:30:00 PM Is Your EQ OK? Exploring and developing our emotional intelligence not only makes us happier, it makes us able to motivate ourselves, manage stress in our lives, and resolve conflict with others. It gives us the skills to be able to encourage, comfort, discipline, and confront different kinds of people appropriately in different situations. It determines how effectively we express our emotions within the cultural contexts of our family, our workplace, and our community. It determines how well people listen to us and how well we are heard. Experience a brief overview of Maricopa County Adult Probation Department s Leadership Academy curriculum in this essential area. Assess your EQ and learn areas that are strengths and areas that you can improve upon. Describe Emotional Intelligence/ EI Competencies. Conduct an Emotional Intelligence Self Assessment. Complete an Emotional Intelligence Development Plan. s Barbara Broderick, Chief Adult Probation Officer, Maricopa County Adult Probation (AZ) Zachary Dal Pra, Deputy Chief, Maricopa Co. 3 Monday 2/27/2012 1:45:00 PM 3:15:00 PM Gang Reentry: The Safety Aspect As agencies attempt to assist gang members in the reentry process, probation and parole officers are confronted with unique challenges. Supervision efforts involve not only providing a wide array of services, but also working in environments that present safety risks for officers. This program provides safety techniques, from the application of Zoning in approaching a residence, vehicle or office, to techniques that increase speed in identifying and reacting to threats. Through the use of computerized audience response technology, participants will view various scenarios and have the opportunity to respond regarding what they observed and how they would respond. This program discusses resources available through the Bureau of Justice Assistance Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Corrections and Reentry Strategies National Training and Technical Assistance Program and is supported by Grant No GP BX K005 awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Identify the 6 threat zones in approaching and entering a residence. Discuss the most effective skills in assessing a threat, in and out of the office. Evaluate their personal responses to threat scenarios through the use of audience response technology. List the steps necessary to apply for technical assistance through the PSN program. s Robert L. Thornton, Director, Community Corrections Institute (WA) Ron Scheidt, Senior U.S. Probation Officer, District of Nebraska (NE) Moderator Lori Huff Herald, Supervisory CSO, Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (DC) Workshop Keys: Line Staff, Health and Safety, Research
4 Monday 2/27/2012 3:30:00 PM 5:00:00 PM Keys to Successful Community Corrections Partnerships There was a time when various agencies within the justice system worked more independently through different means to achieve their common goal public safety. However, working in isolation is often counterproductive and can unnecessarily create a competitive environment. As such, it is important for justice agencies including community corrections supervision agencies to move away from this fragmented approach to business and move toward a more collaborative approach. This session will explore characteristics of successful community corrections partnerships and offer participants a chance to engage in dialogue about the status of partnerships among their departments and other agencies. This workshop is sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Identify the types of community corrections partnerships. Describe common barriers to successful partnerships. Identify the characteristics of successful partnerships. Discuss the purpose and features and functionality of a new web based learning and collaboration portal that APPA is developing with funds from the Bureau of Justice Assistance that will provide online training and create online peer to peer learning comm. Robert P. Boehmer, Director, Institute for Public Safety Partnerships, University of Illinois at Chicago (IL) /Moderator Tracy Mullins, MS, Deputy Director, American Probation and Parole Association (KY) Workshop Keys: Federal, Collaboration, Technology
