2014 ANNUAL REPORT GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF CENTRAL FLORIDA, INC.

Tailored to our community s needs Connecting people to jobs for more than 50 years In 1959, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida began providing tools that help people overcome barriers to employment and find meaningful work. Today more than 50 years after our first store opened in downtown Orlando s Church Street Station we re making an even greater impact through new Retail Stores, Donation Xpress Centers, Job Connection Centers and online shopping. Each year, thousands of Central Floridians turn to Goodwill for life-changing services and free resources that enable them to get back on their feet. All of this, of course, is possible thanks to your generous donations. When you shop or donate at Goodwill, you re funding services that help people find jobs and achieve economic self-sufficiency right here in our community. In 2014, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida continued to tailor our programs and services to our region s needs. From strengthening the local workforce to offering resources for both job seekers and employers, Goodwill serves as the right fit for our community. For the fourth year in a row, we ve been able to increase the number of Central Floridians served in our Job Connection Centers reaching 42,002 people with resources, support and training to help them find meaningful work. Additionally, we placed 7,079 people in jobs. Co-locating the Leesburg and West Melbourne Job Connection Centers with our retail stores has enabled significantly more people to find and use Goodwill s services. Employment is the most direct pathway toward improving family stability and building a strong local economy. With the generous support of SunTrust, we opened a West Orlando Job Connection and Adult Learning Center in the heart of Pine Hills giving residents access to life-changing job resources and training. This location provides a platform to expand services to Central Florida s homeless population in partnership with local employers. As many hard-working Central Floridians struggle to make ends meet with low-paying jobs, Goodwill has increased our focus on preparing individuals to move beyond entry-level positions. We are helping people plan for the future by offering programs such as English-language and GED-prep courses that allow them to earn stackable credentials and transferrable skills. From opening nine new Donation Xpress Centers to unveiling a solar panel installation at our Waterford Lakes store in partnership with Duke Energy to relocating several Job Connection Centers, we had a busy year full of openings and moves. Looking ahead, we ll continue to focus on making the donor experience even more convenient by opening new Donation Xpress Centers in neighborhoods across Central Florida. As always, the community s generosity is vital to these efforts. This year and every year, we re grateful for your commitment to changing lives in Central Florida. William G. Oakley President and CEO Maximiano Brito, AIA Board Chair William G. Oakley President and CEO Maximiano Brito, AIA Rhodes + Brito Architects Board Chair 1

Tackling poverty, one family at a time According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 25% of residents in the zip code live at or below the poverty level. Goodwill is making a long-term investment in this area with our West Orlando Job Connection and Adult Learning Center, which opened in fall 2014 with generous support from SunTrust Foundation. try Goodwill on for size In 2014, Goodwill continued to expand to serve Central Floridians in need of work. Across the region, we opened new places where people can shop, donate, and access job training and placement services. Located inside the Maxwell Terrace Apartments in Pine Hills, the Center assists disadvantaged residents including many transitioning from homeless shelters who previously had few options for job training and placement. At this location and our other eight Job Connection Centers across Central Florida, our vocational specialists focus on helping people take the next step toward self-sufficiency whether it s finding their very first job earning a certificate or credentials to advance beyond entry level or building the technical skills to compete in a rapidly changing workforce. The Center has already made a tangible impact. Since opening, it has: Served nearly 1,000 Central Floridians with job training and placement Hired an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructor to help residents acquire basic conversational and written language skills More ways to Locations that fit the bill This year, Goodwill relocated several facilities to enhance the shopping and donor experience while reducing operational costs by combining our vocational services under the same roof. This year s big moves included: As part of Goodwill s Made in America initiative, our West Melbourne Retail Store and Job Connection Center relocated to a 24,000-squarefoot facility built using 99% U.S.-made products and environmentally conscious construction practices. In Leesburg, we moved across U.S. Highway 441, nearly doubling our space in a new location that houses our retail store and Job Connection Center. This store was retrofitted with U.S.-made furnishings as part of the Made in America initiative. We moved our bargain outlet and online sales department including our rapidly growing e-books program from our headquarters on South Orange Blossom Trail across the street to a 33,000-square-foot facility. To make giving to Goodwill even more convenient, we opened nine more Donation Xpress Centers in five counties across Central Florida: Orange County South Orlando (13900 Landstar Blvd.) Colonial Plaza (2212 E. Colonial Drive) Seminole County Winter Park (1980 Howell Branch Road) Osceola County Boggy Creek / Kissimmee (2250 Fortune Road) St. Cloud (2009 Hickory Tree Road) Volusia County Deltona (901 Doyle Road) Cocoa (430 N. Cocoa Blvd.) Brevard County West Melbourne (1400 W. New Haven Ave.) Palm Bay (4250 Minton Road) Creating a brighter future In addition to making a difference in people s lives, Goodwill is committed to protecting the environment. This year, we continued to practice sustainability through our Made in America initiative in new store constructions. And, thanks to a generous grant from Duke Energy, we unveiled a solar panel installation at our Waterford Lakes Retail Store. The 14,000-square-foot, 580-panel array was manufactured in the U.S. by Suniva and provides a sustainable energy source meeting an estimated 76% of the store s power needs. By reducing our carbon footprint, the project will generate cost savings to benefit Goodwill s vocational programs. Goodwill s local economic impact in 2014: $121,151,705 Goodwill relies on the generosity of our community to support job training and placement services year-round. We d like to extend a special thank you to the Helen Van Tine Family Trust for its $50,000 gift, which will allow us to reach even more local residents in

the Finding right fit in the workplace Every donation to Goodwill directly supports vocational programs that help clients achieve self-sufficiency. With the help of donors, volunteers and community partners, our staff reached a record number of Central Floridians this year. At our Job Connection Centers across six counties, we served 42,002 individuals in need and placed 7,079 in jobs. 4 Building lives that work The vast majority of Goodwill s clients face barriers that make it challenging to fit into the workforce. When our staff connects them with jobs that match their skills and abilities, we not only meet their immediate financial needs we also give them confidence and a sense of purpose. At right are some of this year s success stories. Latreze C. Lee Anne R. Carita W. Gene E. Merritt Island Retail Store Employee In his early 30s, Latreze had never had a job. After years of being turned down by employers, he was unsure he d ever find a place in the workforce. Then he started a job-training program at Goodwill. Latreze s journey wasn t easy, but he was determined to succeed catching the bus each day and arriving at work with a smile. With the support of his co-workers and supervisors, Latreze built his skills and confidence. He was thrilled to be hired as a donations attendant at Goodwill s Merritt Island store, where he helps turn donations into jobs for other Central Floridians in need. Having a job to come to each day is the best feeling, Latreze says. Just a year ago, I never dreamed this was possible but Goodwill made it happen! Court-Ordered Community Service Employee Lee Anne served as an Army intelligence and counter-terrorism analyst for eight years before staying home with her young children. After the break-up of her marriage, Lee Anne struggled to re-enter the workforce, holding down several low-paying jobs just to get by. Then, she was referred to Goodwill through the Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Program. Goodwill staff worked with Lee Anne to find a job that used her abilities and talents. Now, she manages our program for court-ordered community service workers. In this role, Lee Anne not only earns a solid income to provide for her family she s also giving others a chance to redirect their lives after getting into trouble with the law. Lee Anne takes pride in her job, and it shows. Re-entering the workforce and regaining my confidence was challenging, but Goodwill was with me every step of the way, she says. donations = jobs and jobs change lives. Hospitality Employee Carita moved to Kissimmee from South Florida for a job opportunity, but when she arrived, the job had been filled. With no income, she soon became homeless. She found her way to a local shelter, where she started working with Andre, a Goodwill employment specialist through Goodwill s Homeless Services Network. Andre immediately noticed Carita s positive personality and her drive to rise above her circumstances. Through Goodwill s partnership with a major hotel chain, Andre connected Carita with a hiring manager. Carita was quickly hired as a front lobby attendant and is saving for more permanent housing. I m excited to come to work every day, Carita says. I m learning a lot about the hospitality industry, and I m hopeful for the future. Donation Processor West Melbourne Retail Store Born with cerebral palsy, Gene spent years searching for an employer to give him a chance. He began a jobtraining program at Goodwill, which introduced him to the world of work and a manager patiently coached him to meet his goals. Gene battled selfdoubt, but after Goodwill staff helped him prepare for an interview, he was hired for a full-time role as a donation processor at the West Melbourne store. Gene won the hearts of his co-workers with his willpower to succeed taking the bus each day and walking the remaining two miles to work. To ease Gene s commute, his job placement specialist recently arranged for him to receive a motorized scooter. Gene is grateful to have a sense of purpose for the first time. Goodwill has played a major role in helping me get to this place in my life, he says. I was apprehensive about starting this journey, but the Goodwill staff has been a constant support. 5

Well-suited to support our community Some of this year s highlights include: During the Fill the Need drive with Second Harvest Food Bank, our shoppers and donors contributed nonperishable food items to bins in Goodwill stores collecting a total of 1,295 pounds of food (or 863 meals) for hungry local families. In September, CEO Bill Oakley and our senior staff took the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Ice Bucket Challenge, in honor of an employee who lost her battle with ALS. In addition to raising awareness about the disease, the effort generated over $600 through on-site and online donations. In October, 33 Goodwill employees participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk at Lake Eola in Orlando raising funds to support breast cancer research through the American Cancer Society. Thanks to an in-kind donation from C.T. Hsu Architects, we designed and built a Goodwill storefront at the Children s Safety Village a realistic miniature city located near the Central Florida Fairgrounds in west Orlando. By visiting the storefront, families can teach their kids the importance of giving back starting at a young age. In the fall, we had 100% participation from Goodwill staff in a fundraising campaign to benefit the Heart of Florida United Way, which reaches Central Floridians in need. Goodwill s impact extends beyond the four walls of our retail stores and Job Connection Centers. By partnering with corporations and other nonprofits, we re helping to meet our community s needs one individual or family at a time. More ways to make a difference Since it launched in 2013, our volunteer program continues to expand with individuals and organizations across Central Florida rolling up their sleeves to make an impact. Whether processing donated items in our warehouse or holding community donation drives, volunteers play an invaluable role in achieving our mission. Highlights include: Employees from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Orlando at SeaWorld assisted Goodwill staff by processing donated items in our warehouse. They appreciated getting a behind-the-scenes look at how Goodwill turns donations into jobs. In April, nearly 90 youth from Boys & Girls Clubs across Florida helped organize items in our Orange Blossom Trail Retail Store and sorted books in our warehouse. In July, a group of volunteers from Universal Orlando Resort worked in our e-cycle department processing donated electronics for resale in our retail stores. Thirty Siemens employees logged volunteer hours during the month of August working in our warehouse, listing items on shopgoodwill.com and helping out in our main office. Universal Technical Institute built 30 tricycles during a staff development day and in turn, Goodwill provided them to the Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, benefiting children in at-risk situations. In 2014, 355 volunteers logged a total of 10,443 hours a value of $196,851. I volunteered in Goodwill s public relations department to earn college credit. Once my credit hours were complete, I wanted to continue! I learned skills that will prepare me for my future. I encourage everyone to volunteer for Goodwill, because the experience will change your life forever. Tiffany 6 7

A year for celebrating In July, we relocated our Leesburg Retail Store and Job Connection Center under one roof moving across U.S. Highway 441 to a more spacious, convenient facility. From hosting a national Goodwill conference to engaging with bloggers across Central Florida to celebrating our employees, Goodwill hosted many impactful events in Among this year s happenings: During August, Goodwill held a back-to-school campaign in partnership with bloggers across Central Florida. Eight bloggers shopped at Goodwill for their children s school gear, then shared their experiences via blogging and social media. The campaign reached hundreds of thousands of Central Floridians through blog posts and social media, introducing them to Goodwill s mission and sharing ways to get involved. Throughout the month of March, we hit the road to host employee appreciation events at our retail stores. At each location, four food trucks served free meals while Goodwill leadership presented staff with goodie bags and T-shirts. At Goodwill s Annual Employee Recognition Banquet on April 2, we continued to celebrate the hard-working staff who carry out Goodwill s mission each day. This year s theme was I Make it Work, and the award winners proved that to be true with kudos going to many of our programs, retail stores, Job Connection Centers and employees. In August, we hosted the Goodwill Industries International (GII) Summer Conference at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. At the event, called Envisioning the Future of Goodwill Together, nearly 900 people from Goodwill organizations across the United States gathered to network, learn about best practices, and discuss industry trends and solutions. In October, we hosted job fairs at nine Job Connection Centers where 3,000 Central Floridians met with local employers hiring for a variety of positions. As a result, 287 people found work. In December, the 12th annual Give a Little Goodwill holiday campaign invited shoppers to buy a paper truck with a donation of $1 or more raising $31,000 to benefit Goodwill s vocational services. 8 9
