June Meeting... Anniversary Celebration and Membership Drive A time to Remember Section 301: The get together for the June meeting is near and dear to our hearts because we had a very great representation of past members and chairs. This meeting will always be remembered. See Photos Below: 3
4 301 Section Experiences THE FAR REACHING HANDS OF QUALITY Section 301 has numerous members that have attained the certification status of CQA, CQM and CQE. Some members have had exciting quality experiences. Each month we will feature one our true leaders of quality. Quality in Education By Cynthia Scheetz, Scholarship Chair and past section Chair After 24 years in the chemical engineering field, I now teach high school chemistry. They say life isn t about the destination, it is about the journey. The most important thing is to be a life-long learner and what better way than to change careers and work with high school aged students! Some major differences between industry and education are that my school does not have many procedures or documentation control. It would help when you are assigned student center and learning center duties. Instead you have to ask another teacher. Even the curriculum or objectives are not dated and controlled. I arrived in Connecticut in 1989, when Mobil Chemical Co. transferred me from the Films Division Technical Center in Macedon, NY to be the Quality Control Lab Supervisor in Stratford, CT. The Stratford plant was recently closed by Exxon-Mobil. After eight years as a sales engineer at a privately owned manufacturing facility, with only 2 weeks vacation for 7 years, I decided to try teaching to stay in CT. The first year has had a steep learning curve and I need to get approval by the state of Connecticut next year (Beginning Educator Support and Training or BEST) and I will need a masters degree down the road. But all in all I am glad I have chosen this new career path. Cynthia Scheetz -An educational opportunity with a Pratt & Whitney engine at their training facility in East Hartford hosted by MIT Alumni for math and science teachers. 4
5 Welcome back to all members from a summer of some vacations, holidays, and work. As you may know, all local sections across the country follow a fiscal year, which starts July 1 st, but with summer vacations, really starts with the September meeting. We are fortunate to have Dr. Michael McGivern to speak to our section this month about Ethics a topic pertinent to all professionals. Most of our section committees are staffed with our committed volunteer leaders. I checked the section seniority list recently, and while I may be in the top 20% of the membership, I drop to the top 40% of our committee chairs. Wondering further if the profile of the leaders is different from membership at large: Yrs.Since Joined301 all volunteers Average Median Max Min stdev Chairman s Message September 2007 Yes, our volunteer leaders have been members longer, twice as long on average. But the distribution is skewed many of you may have noticed the large difference between the median and mean for both the volunteers and all the members. So, maybe not so much difference after all. And what does a time difference mean? Experience. And how to get experience? Volunteer! The Programs and Education Committees are OPEN, as well as the Vice-Chair position. Let me know if you are interested, all it takes is willingness, and the ability to attend half or more of the meetings. We also need speakers for several of the upcoming dinners meetings this year. I look forward to seeing many of you this month and those following. Sincerely, Mike D Onofrio CERTIFICATION EXAM REFRESHER COURSES SIGN UP NOW!
