2 Dear Students and Parents I am pleased to invite you to attend Rednock School s own Careers Convention to be held on Wednesday 15th March from 12pm to 4pm. There will be a large number of representatives from organisations available with whom you can explore various career options; a full list can be found in this booklet. Choosing a career is perhaps one of the most important decisions you have to make in life and it is not an easy choice. A Careers Convention gives you the opportunity to meet experts who are willing to give first hand information and advice about the industries and professions they represent. This is more important than ever in an increasingly competitive labour market. Please study the programme and decide on your priorities. It will save time if you know in advance which advisers to consult, as there will be a large number of students and parents attending the Convention. Try to decide on the information that you need from the advisers. A check list of questions to ask should ensure that the right information is obtained and we hope that this will help you to make an informed choice of careers when the time comes. We should like to thank the representatives of all the organisations for giving so generously of their time to assist our students. Many thanks also to all the advertisers in this programme. D Alexander Headteacher 2017.
3 CHAIR OF GOVERNORS MESSAGE Welcome to the Rednock Careers Convention This is an important step towards the world of work, but what does work mean? The relevant dictionary definitions are: activity involving mental or physical effort done to achieve a result work as a means of earning income, employment It can be said that you are actively involved in the first of these definitions as learners studying the subjects of your choice with the goal of achieving the best results that you can. This will lead or guide you to the second definition which comes into play when you leave education to enter the world of work. The world of work is changing and we are told that in the future we will have a number of jobs throughout our working lives. This seems a daunting prospect and how do we choose what we want to do in the future from the range of options available? Some of you may already have an idea as to what it is you want to do in the future, particularly if you have a vocation to do something for the greater good, or to learn a trade or become professionally qualified and you may already be thinking about the qualifications you need to do this or actively studying them. However, you may only have a sketchy idea of what it is you want to do and find it difficult to settle on a job role that interests you and you think that you will like. Enjoyment is the key to work and the Rednock Careers Convention gives you the opportunity to gather loads of information about a range jobs that you feel you may enjoy to give you pointers as to what these are really like. You will meet a range of experts who do the jobs you are interested in, and who can answer your questions about prospects, training requirements, pay and the qualifications you will need to start work. You may have several different careers in your working life, with a good likelihood that one of them will be doing something that no one has heard of yet. Wherever your career path may wander, however, you will always carry with you the experience you start to build up with your first job. On behalf of the Governors, the Staff and the students of the school I thank all the organisations that are represented here today. I hope that they too will find the Convention a profitable investment of their time. Peter Broomfield Chair of Governors
4 Careers Convention advice for students Wednesday 15th March 2017 Prepare for your visit to the Careers Convention 1. Look at the programme in advance. 2. Decide which stands you want to visit. 3. Does your company offer apprenticeships? What opportunities are there for on the job training? What are the opportunities for career progression within your organisation? What makes your organisation a good one to work for? What are the main things that you are looking for in a CV/ letter of application? What qualifications do you expect applicants to have for this job / area of work? What are you looking for when you interview applicants? Which A levels and GCSEs would you recommend if I want to pursue a career in XXX? Which university courses would you recommend / not recommend for a career in this area?
