The meeting was called to order by Director, Mary Ludden, at 10:01 a.m. Introductions including a fun question by Chat Pack. Two new members introduced: Lisa Dean College Relations Chair (Not in attendance), Teresa Gaustad Conference Shadow for legislative conference Minutes Minutes approved. Moved by Scott. He has been out in OUR Washington introducing SHRM Advocacy Program to members. David goes out to train individuals to advocate in their Congressional District. The goal is to get legislators to say What does my HR person think about this? before acting on legislation that impacts HR. Washington was one of the first 10 states in which this was rolled out. There are now identified volunteers for this program in about 25% of the legislative districts in which this has been rolled out. The Advocacy Captain role is to help enhance what SHRM chapters already provide in educating members to advocate for HR issues. David has already spoken at two chapter meetings SHRM Olympia (35) and South Puget Sound (40+) - here in the Puget Sound and tonight will speak to an event in Seattle ( HR Politics and Chocolate ) for members of the Snohomish 1
County, Lake Washington and Seattle chapters. About 210 volunteers have stepped forward, many as Advocacy Captains. Advocacy Captains are still needed in legislative districts 1, 4, 5, 6 & Year End Business SHRM Update Dianna Gould Dianna highlighted some of SHRM s strategic priorities. They include expanding their global presence. SHRM will be opening offices in Bangalore and Delhi. There are over 2,000 SHRM members in India, which has the largest number of members outside of the US. There has been an increase in membership dues. They went from $160 to $180. It is the first increase in dues in 20 years. There is an incentive that gives first time registrants a $15 break in their dues. SHRM also has a transition benefit that unemployed members can use. To make use of this benefit call member care. The SHRM National Conference deadline is coming up. Volunteer leaders receive a discounted rate if they register by April 15 th ($1070). SHRM is with organizations such as AARP and Family Work Institute as they continue work in the area of thought leadership on topics such as workplace flexibility. Volunteer leaders should be mindful of the webinars and virtual conferences that will be coming up throughout the year. Director Reports Workforce Readiness - Audi Ritz 14 of the 17 chapters have Workforce Readiness positions or representatives on their boards. Audi and Claudia Malone went to Olympia and met with Elani Papadakis Executive Director of the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board and with Carol Melby, Program Administrator of the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges. They discussed possible partnering /involvement of the SHRM Chapter Workforce Readiness Director with the applicable Workforce Development Councils. Another partnership Audi has been working on is Junior Achievement. It would involve conference calls for the different chapter Workforce Readiness Directors on how they can get their members involved with Junior Achievement. Audi has initiated several communications with the different chapter Workforce Readiness Directors or representatives to make herself available for support or to answer questions, communicate the WRD s Workforce Readiness 2011 Conference Call and Webinar Events Schedule and to communicate the Chapter Leader webinars. Audi did a brief follow-up questionnaire to find out if the chapter leaders had participated in the recent webinar, if they had a plan for the year and offered her assistance. College Readiness Mary Ludden on behalf of Lisa Dean 2011 Pacific West Regional Student Conference will be held March 4th and 5th at Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland. Pacific West SHRM Student Conference agenda includes HR Case Studies and Educational Seminars. Lisa is looking for volunteers to assist with the HR Case Studies. Contact Maureen Flaherty Maureen.flaherty@shrm.org if you are interested in helping. Membership Mary Ludden on behalf of Marie LaMarche Columbia Basin Chapter, South Puget Sound Chapter and Lake Washington Human Resource Association received Super Star Designation for 10%+ membership growth. iroster is coming. This will allow each chapter to audit their rosters. If you do need assistance with an audit you can ask our SHRM Membership assistant, Melissa for an audit. Send her your list and she will check it. 2
Diversity - Christine DeVere We are looking at partnering with Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for another conference. The format and topic would be similar to last year s disability conference. Strategic Conference Sherry Pelletier Alexis Herman has been confirmed to be the key note speaker for the Strategic Conference. Ms. Herman served as the Secretary of Labor for President Clinton. Andrew Crawford of World Café will be the closing session speaker. Legislative David Black HR Day on the Hill is scheduled for March 8 th, The HR Politics and Chocolate 2/18/11 is tonight. One piece of legislation that HR professionals should watch for is House Bill It would permit private employers to exercise a voluntary veterans' preference in employment. If it were to pass it would be the first in the nation. We have about 700,000 vets in the state. Public employers already have this. Another House Bill to watch for is It is a workplace anti-bullying statute that could potentially create a massive protected class.all employees! Employers would be responsible for not having harassment in the workplace. (The legislation is needed because we employers really like having harassment in the workplace.) SHRM Foundation Scott Washburn Scott will be reaching out to chapter Foundation Chairs. Participation pledges due by June. WSC SHAPE is due end of March. He may be contacting chapters for info in order to complete this. Employment Law Traci Sunday The conference is scheduled for March 23, 2011 at the Meydenbauer Center. The Keynote speaker is David Fram, formerly with EEOC and now with the National Employment Law Institute. This is a great recertification credit value! Dorsey Whitney continues to be a fantastic partner in this event. The registration costs are. $250 SHRM, $299 non-shrm and WSC board member pay only half the SHRM rate. HRCI certification hasn t been approved at the time of this meeting, but should be 6.25 credits. There were 143 registered at the time of this meeting. Global Mary Ludden on behalf of Carol Olsby See WSC website for calendar of the Global program series. Each is provided free of charge to members and provides GPHR credits! Communications Lisa Bliven Mary reminded us that the content on the website is not Lisa s responsibility. Council members are responsible for providing the content to Lisa to update, shoot her an if you need anything updated. Treasurer Melinda Dickie Melinda briefed the board and new members on primary revenue and expenses for the WSC. Last year was the first time we incurred some expenses for the Employment Law Conference. Additionally, we had expenses relating to HR Day On The Hill and the strategic conference. New to the budget this year is a line item to support our membership strategy. The budget presented does have a $5990 loss, but our reserve is still a very healthy $80,000. 3
Anne Raffetto moved to approve the budget. Lisa Dean seconded. The budget was approved with no additional discussion. Director Mary Ludden Mary reported that NHRMA is changing how chapters receive funds from NHRMA. They are requiring that chapters publicize the NHRMA Conference on the front page of their website in order to receive funds from the conference. NHRMA will be preparing more detailed instructions. Lisa Bliven is to get that information to forward to the District Directors. The information needs to be up on chapter websites by March 1 st. Anne will be sure the District Directors send to Communication Directors and Presidents. It was noted that NHRMA previously gave proceeds from NHRMA Conference to chapters based on their Merit status. With SHAPE changes this is changing. NHRMA also wants chapters to be sending out info publicizing NHRMA Foundation events. Mary brought to the group s attention that there is a group called SHRM Members for Transparency. They are bringing issues to SHRM board perks, search for CEO, and other concerns. This group is sending information out to chapters. If you are contacted and have questions, send Hank a question ceo@shrm.org. The group is apparently comprised of former staff, board members and volunteer leaders. Mary will send a couple of questions to us next week in preparation for upcoming summit seeking our feedback on some issues. Our District Director (South) had to step down to work considerations. Past presidents are ideal candidates for this position. Mary is looking for someone to step into this role. Please forward your recommendations ASAP we are looking to fill this position immediately. Professional Development Dianna Gould Dianna facilitated Healthcare Reform & HR, one of SHRM s meeting in a box DVD. It is suggested that each chapter have one of these on hand in the event a speaker doesn t show. It was worth one (1) HRCI strategic credit. (#75463 use 09/16/10 as the date) District Directors Report / Chapter Exchange Anne Raffetto, Kristina Hayek Eastern District Directors Anne Raffetto Anne has spoken with most of their presidents regarding their progress on the Chapter SHAPE report. SW District Directors - Deanne Hull No report. NW District Directors - Kristina Hayek No report. Kristina and Anne updated the group on the results from the Chapter President survey sent out via Survey Monkey. Total completed surveys (13) Initial feedback indicates Chapter Presidents are seeking information about WSC mission and it s connection to the Chapters; assistance in speakers, in-state networking opportunities, membership retention and succession planning. As a result of the survey, the District Directors will be putting together an activity for the June meeting to provide tools for Chapter leaders on Succession planning 4
The next WSC Meeting will be April 8 th. It will be a conference call. Meeting adjourned 3:12 pm Recorded by Doug Kimura, WSC Secretary 5
