2 The Emerging Leader Program Deadline to register is April 1, 2017 $2,800 for the first employee $2,600 for each additional employee from the same company The ABC of Wisconsin Emerging Leader Program is designed to provide education for future construction company leaders who need or want to enhancne their knowledge. This exceptional program offers day-long sessions on relevant topics selected by a taskforce of next generation construction business owners in Wisconsin. The program consists of eleven modules taught by top industry leaders, covering construction specific topics every emerging leader needs to know. The program will run over the course of a year. As part of the program, participants are invited to attend the 2017 ABC Human Resources Conference AND the 2018 SuperCon. Participants may choose from attend a wide range of sessions at these events. There will also be three networking opportunities for participants to meet with peers and other ABC members. Subject Outline & Schedule Classes held at: ABC of Wisconsin Training Center 5330 Wall Street, Madison 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted 26 APR 27 APR 24 MAY 28 JUN Transitioning From Employee to Leader: The Big Picture There is no doubt that moving up the ladder in a company takes a different set of skills than are required on the job site. Emerging leaders will examine the transitional leadership skills needed to become successful business professionals. 4:30 pm -7:00 pm: Networking Reception - Join your classmates and graduates of the previous Emerging Leaders program for refreshments after the first session. Interpersonal Skills: Know Yourself to Lead Others Great leaders need to know how they view the world before they can effectively work with others. Emerging leaders will take the DISC personality profile to provide a foundational understanding of various personality styles, starting with their own. From there, participants will study the impact interpersonal skills have within their construction teams. Labor Law & Compensation Presented by Dan Barker and Scott Dettmann Emerging leaders must know the proper response when an employee asks questions. Participants will review the critical and legal dos and don ts to these questions. In addition, participants will receive an understanding of compensation, a critical management component. Participants will review key information on this topic and how it relates to working in a merit shop environment. Company Culture & Employee Engagement Presented by Elaine Beaubien The culture of an organization is determined by the core values, behavioral expectations and actions of a company s leadership. Emerging leaders will identify key elements required to create reinforcement patterns within the company culture, allowing all employees to positively effect the bottom line. Participants will learn how to develop and foster a company culture that encourages employees to do their best every day.

3 Aligning Ethics, Integrity & Human Relations Great companies are efficient, effective, and ethical. Emerging Leaders will work though scenario-based training focused on integrity to achieve high ethical standards. Participants will learn how to approach employee and company-wide conflict while maintaining strong ethical principals. Construction Law, Contracts, Issues & Resolutions Presented by Josh Levy Understanding construction law and the contracts involved in everyday business is an imperative skill for emerging leaders. Participants will cover the basics of construction law, contract documents, and contract modifications. Common legal issues encountered by construction companies will be identified and solutions and strategies will be studied. Connecting the Dots: Branding, Marketing & Sales Presented by Jessica Drexler. Note: Location will be Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells What is the difference between branding and marketing and how to they work together to drive customer engagement and sales? By first understanding these differences, emerging leaders will learn the proper steps to generate new business and strengthen relationships with existing customers. Participants will explore how to leverage the potential of employees to serve as advocates for your company. (7:00 pm Networking Reception with ABC member HR professionals.) Human Resources Conference (Kalahari Resort) Each Emerging Leader will choose from a wide variety of HR topics. Bonding, Risk Management & Safety Presented by Jay Zahn and Don Moen Emerging Leaders need to have a comprehensive understanding of bonding. Participants will review construction surety bonds, including bid, performance and payment bonds. The discussion will offer insight on what is needed to secure surety credit along with contractor characteristics and relationships that lead to the most favorable credit. Participants will cover the importance of safety and risk management from a business operations perspective. Financial Management & Succession Planning Presented by Mike Somers & a Panel of Industry Professionals Budgeting and strong financial management are a part of business. Emerging leaders will learn to set up strong internal financial controls along with reviewing how to read, understand, and make decisions based on balance sheets and financial statements (and the difference between the two). Guidelines and advice on how to develop a strong working relationship with financial institutions will be examined. Succession planning strategies will be discussed by a panel of industry professionals who have successfully gone through the process. Strategic Planning & Your Professional Presence Presenter TBA. Note: Location will be Glacier Canyon Lodge in Wisconsin Dells Long range planning, creating a vision for the company, and building credentials are often forgotten, but important responsibilities for an emerging leader. Participants will learn ways to boost their presence as a leader, both within their company and within the construction community. (7:00 pm Networking Reception with ABC members prior to SuperCon.) SuperCon (Glacier Canyon Lodge) Each Emerging Leader will choose from a wide variety of leadership topics. Putting it All Together In this 4-hour session, Emerging Leaders will be challenged to use the skills and knowledge gained throughout the program.
