2 WHAT IS RPL? An obvious question that is answered understood differently by various key stakeholders in the mining sector. (Employers, Organised Labour, state)

3 RPL IN PERSPECTIVE RPL within education and training, and within the workplace, has differing requirements, and its implementation across these different contexts must accommodate the specialised and formative nature of learning in these settings.

4 EMPLOYERS PERSPECTIVE RPL is part of an assessment process towards a qualification: It is not an end on its own It is not limited to years of experience in a specific practice It is part of the means to an end

5 SECTION 28 ARTISAN THROUGH RPL IN THE MINING INDUSTRY Not all sub sectors of the mining sector accept a person who is a Section 28 Artisan. The coal sub sector accept a Section 28 Artisan qualification on condition that the person has been trained in the sector

7 SECTION 28 ARTISAN THROUGH RPL COAL SUB SECTOR Proof of completion of N2 at an accredited Private or Public FET College Or Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics and Science with an official report card or Matric results. Certificate of an experience in your specific field from your company, preferably in the mining industry.

8 SECTION 28 ARTISAN THROUGH RPL COAL SUB SECTOR STEPS TO SECTION 28 ARTISAN EXAMINATIONS 1. Registration at Collieries Training Centre (CTC) for pre assessment to identify knowledge and experiential gaps. 2. Enrolled for a theory and practical course at CTC to address gaps and enhance knowledge. 3. On the job project work in a real workplace.

9 SECTION 28 ARTISAN THROUGH RPL COAL SUB SECTOR 4. Occasional tests both theory and practical to assess understanding and readiness for final examination. 5. Preliminary examination to build confidence in the learner. 6. FINAL SECTION 28 ARTISAN TICKET TRADE TEST WORK PLACEMENT AS AN ARTISAN

11 LEARNING POINTS ABOUT ARTISAN QUALIFICATION THROUGH RPL IN THE COAL SUB SECTOR Theoretical knowledge is critical (N2 or Matric Maths and Science) Experience in the field of study is critical Formal qualification is not negotiable Qualification is obtained through a

12 RPL FOR ROCK ENGINEERING IN THE MINING SECTOR PRINCIPLES FOR RPL No compromise of the Rock Engineering Certificate (REC) standards. Assessment process must be repeatable and measurable. Peer review committee is used to assess experience and competency. Professional Body (SANIRE) needs to acknowledge and approve the assessment process and results.

13 RPL FOR ROCK ENGINEERS IN THE MINING SECTOR ENTRY CRITERIA 4 year degree or relevant international equivalent in: Engineering Geology Geology Mining Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Minimum 6 months operational experience.

14 RPL FOR ROCK ENGINEERING CERTIFICATE IN THE MINING SECTOR ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Based on the COMREC syllabus. Self assessment of knowledge and experience. Demonstrate application of knowledge. Education Where experience was gained Reference reports Interview session by a panel of experienced
