4 Why is this discussion important? In many organizations there is an overlap of job responsibilities There is still much debate on who does what (and why) The Business Relationship Manager (BRM) is relatively new Some roles like PM or EA have been in place for a long time Now we have new players The IIBA just released a new update to the BABOK Many the roles overlap with one another 4

5 What are the duties of a Business Analyst? Understand how organizations function to meet objectives and achieve goals Define the capabilities required to provide products and services to external stakeholders In an effort to provide value to the organization Define how the various organizational units and stakeholders interact Describe and validate solutions that meet business needs, goals, and objectives Document business, stakeholder, and solution requirements Identifies and prioritizes business needs 5

6 What are the duties of a Business Relationship Manager? Acts as a liaison between the provider and the business partner Typically between IT and the business partner Helps shape the demand for provider services Recommends potential initiatives to meet the needs of the business partner Primary client contact 6

7 What are the duties of a Project Manager? Initiates, plans and manages the project Establishes clear and achievable objectives and requirements Balances completing demands for quality, scope, time, and cost Adapts specifications, plans and approach To address the different stakeholder concerns and expectations 7

8 What are the duties of an Enterprise Architect? Takes organizations business strategy and defines and IT systems architecture to support that strategy EA s need to understand the company s business and dive deeply into technology issues Work with stakeholders, leadership and subject matter experts to build holistic view of the organization s strategy, processes, information, and information technology assets Goal is to develop an architecture that supports the most efficient and secure IT environment meeting a company s business needs 8

How do you integrate the roles to improve project performance? 4. Do you think we all need these roles for project success? 5. How would you describe the interaction that need to take place between the various roles? 6. What is the single most important advice you can give us to ensure these roles integrate well? 9

10 Unfortunately there is no one answer First step is to have a clear definition/description for each role People might be unclear on their job responsibilities Challenge is when one group was there first and others added later Many wear different hats to get the job done Now with new people their responsibilities change Might not be happy about it!
