Currently, profitability is on the rise while de-risking of bank balance sheets has generally reduced enterprise-wide risk. This lower level of risk coupled with a build-up in capital has created excess capital levels. In contrast to these favorable developments, the strong loan growth experienced through the last decade among community banks has begun to produce incremental pressure on liquidity positions, especially as deposit growth has begun to slow. Additionally, online depositories are attracting yield hungry customers away from traditional banks.
