1 Learner Information Sheet 601/4234/0 ILM Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management (QCF) OVERVIEW Type of qualification This is a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) designed for new and aspiring department heads, regional team leaders and other middle managers. It helps learners to consolidate their management skills and experience, gain comprehensive business knowledge, and develop the technical skills they need to lead effectively at this level in an operational management role. You will gain a minimum of 15 credits on successful completion of the qualification. We expect learners to complete this qualification through around Guided Learning Hours of study within a maximum period of three years. What does this qualification cover? As a learner on this qualification you will learn and develop a range of skills required for working effectively as an Operational Manager while being taught the knowledge required to work successfully within this area of management. (Please note that the Operational Manager role may be described differently by different employers). You will gain and demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the core areas of management through a set of mandatory units, then through a choice of optional units allowing you to experience the different skills required to work within management and leadership positions in organisations. There are two mandatory units (a total of 8 credits), which focus on: Understanding the Management Role in Improving Management Performance; and, Planning and Leading a Complex Team Activity. Learners are then required to gain a minimum of an additional 7 credits from Optional Units Groups 1, 2. A maximum of 7 credits may be achieved from Optional Unit Group 2. Employers can work with learners to find the units that best fit individual and organisational requirements. 4 Who could take this qualification? This qualification is suitable for learners aged 18 years or older who are interested in a career in Management. There are no prior qualification entry requirements for learners wishing to study this qualification although ideally learners will be working within an organisation where they are able to gain the knowledge and experience to enable them to complete this qualification. Learners may also use previous experience of either working in an organisation or one they are familiar with. PROGRESSION FROM THIS QUALIFICATION Employment Management skills are applicable in all industries and sectors; applicable job titles therefore vary greatly across industries but may include the following key terms: Manager Operational Manager Senior Manager Specific job title examples include: Deputy Manager Unit Manager Maintenance Manager Senior Manager Team Manager Area Manager Team Leader Site Manager Office Manager Print Team Leader Production Manager Senior Carer Further learning at higher levels On successful completion of the ILM Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management (QCF) you could progress onto the following ILM qualifications: 601/4235/2 ILM Level 4 Diploma in Principles of Leadership and Management (QCF) 600/5853/5 ILM Level 4 Extended Diploma in Leadership and Management (QCF) 600/5855/9 ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management (QCF) 600/5854/7 ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management (QCF) You may also be able to progress to similar Ofqual regulated qualifications offered by other awarding organisations. Alternatives to this qualification There are no directly equivalent qualifications requiring learners to develop skills in the mandatory topics of improving performance and leading complex team activities. ILM does offer a larger qualification; the 601/4235/2 ILM Level 4 Diploma in Principles of Leadership and Management (QCF), where learners develop skills in the mandatory topics of: improving performance; managing personal development; implementing change; and understanding workplace relationships. 5 For middle managers wanting to develop their knowledge and skills in a range of specific topics, ILM also offers a range of shorter qualifications at Level 4. These include: 600/5850/X ILM Level 4 Award in Leadership (QCF) 600/5851/1 ILM Level 4 Award in Leadership and Management (QCF) SUPPORT FOR THIS QUALIFICATION Employers This qualification is supported by a number of employers such as Barchester Healthcare Ltd, British Printing Industries Federation (BPiF), Morgan Sindall Professional Services (Engineering and design consultancy), TL Care and Weatherstones House Nursing Home who use the qualification to demonstrate and ensure the competence and skills of their employees are at the required standards. This qualification is also supported by Skills CFA who are the standard setting body for Management and Leadership. Higher Education (HEIs) This qualification is not suitable for delivery by HEIs and no formal recognition pathways are in place enabling learners to progress to study on a higher education programme of study. Professional bodies ILM is a professional membership body for Leadership & Management professionals. Upon commencement of this qualification you will be eligible to become a studying member and upon successful completion would be eligible to apply for ILM membership at either Associate member or Member grade.
