The Port of Seattle is divided into operating divisions, plus other departments that support the divisions and the broad mission of the Port: 1) Aviation Division, 2) Capital Development Division, 3) Real Estate Division (which is the home division of Marine Maintenance), and 4) Seaport Division. The Seaport and Real Estate Divisions own and operate approximately 1,200 acres of moorage, cargo-related, and cruise ship facilities. The Real Estate Division employs a maintenance staff, which is responsible for tasks such as facility upkeep, pier and moorage system repair, utility maintenance, and parks maintenance. The Sign Shop is part of Marine Maintenance. This job analysis is for an individual working as a Sign Painter for Marine Maintenance. Essential Functions: Workers in this position perform all sign paintingrelated tasks required by the Seaport and Real Estate Divisions. This may include creating, painting, and installing signs, decals and other graphics from large banners to posters, to traffic signs, to identification stickers on vehicles, to small stickers and decals on tools. Examples of Tasks assigned to the Sign Painters: Meet/connect with Crew Chief on a daily basis. Receive and or review written or oral instructions about assigned work tasks. Request supplies and or materials needed for projects.
2 Page 2 of 11 Prepare and or review job hazard analysis, as needed. Prepare and or review job plans and supporting documentation, as needed. Lay-out and or design sign or graphic. Work is generally completed on a Windows-based computer. Operate computerized sign-making equipment to print text and images, or cut text and graphics from vinyl rolls. Prepare surface upon which the sign or graphic will be applied. Text and graphics may be applied to metal, painted, plastic, wooden, or other types of substrates. Prepare and apply graphics, decals and/or lettering to prepared substrates. Deliver and or install signs as requested. Remove stickers and decals from vehicles. May remove graffiti from signs. Perform all tasks associated with photographic stencils for silk-screen printing and assembly. Clean and maintain all painting equipment and materials. Ensure that materials and supplies are stored and disposed of properly. Enter time by work order on a daily basis into job tracking system (Maximo). Enter description of work completed in work log. Send and respond to electronic mails. Attend periodic meetings during which training is provided and important safety issues are discussed. Assist other crafts as requested. Complete all required forms and documents. Necessary skills and abilities include: Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the sign and graphics trade. Knowledge of proper preparation, blending and application of coatings. Knowledge of basic computer and plotter operations.

Skills in the application, use and manufacturing of coatings, equipment and materials for signs, graphics and decals. Skills in setting up, applying and edge-trimming sheeting for a variety of shapes and surfaces. Skills in layout, block-out, cut-out and mock-up of photographic stencils for silk-screen printing and assembly. Skills in the use of coatings, materials and equipment for making signs, graphics and decals. Working knowledge of Windows-based computers, related accessories, time tracking software, keyboarding, data input skills, and electronic mail software.
4 Page 4 of 11 Machinery, Tools, Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment: Sign Painters use a variety of tools and equipment to accomplish their assigned tasks: Windows-based computers and software (CorelDraw). Computer printers and vinyl cutters. Transfer paper. Rolls of colored vinyl. Squeegee. Stencils. Masking tape. Tape measure. Pliers. Wrenches. Scraper with razor blade. Drill. Paint gun. Zip ties. Sheets of aluminum, corrugated plastic (Corex, etc.), and foam core (classified as substrates ). Stencils. Masking tape. Aprons. Sprayer/paint gun. Paint. Ladders. Manlifts. Bolts. Backing plates. Strapping tool. Metal strapping and clips. Zip ties. Pneumatic grinder with rubber eraser. Laminator. Work truck/vehicle. Office equipment, such as desks, chairs, file cabinets, work tables, shelving units, storage cabinets, photocopying machine, facsimile machine, and other items. General office supplies, including reams of paper, file folders, pens and pencils, ruler, stapler, notepads, document organizers, and laser/copy machine toners. Project management software (Maximo). Personal protective equipment (PPE) may include: face shields, safety glasses, goggles, respirators, hearing protection, gloves, and dust masks. Workers are required to wear safety vests when working. When working in a construction zone, workers are required to wear a hardhat and eye protection. While working on a manlift, fall protection is required. When working within 6 feet of an edge of the water (for example when working on a boat or dock), Sign Painters must wear a personal floatation device ( PFD ).
5 Page 5 of 11 Education / Training: The Marine Maintenance group generally seeks Journeyman level employees. Journey-level status can be obtained through the completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or equivalent experience. Sign Painters must be members of the Sign Painters Union (Local #1094), or join within 30 days of employment. A Boater s Education Card is required for all employees who perform work while in a boat or standing on a work float. Training and or enough hands-on experience with computers to have a significant knowledge of Windows-based computers and related accessories. Working knowledge of time tracking software, keyboarding, data entry, and electronic mail software is also required. Climbing Stairs/Ladders S The computer room where signs and graphics are designed and lettering and graphics are printed and or cut is up a flight of stairs on the second floor. Workers may work on a ladder to height of up to 6 feet, or use a manlift to install signs or banners. Working at Heights/Balancing S While working on a ladder or in a manlift. Bending at Waist F While working on signs at a work table, applying decals, performing computer work, reaching for items stored around computer station, working on tasks or gathering supplies at or below waist level. Bending Neck F Neck movements are needed to perform many of the tasks assigned and completed. While working on signs on a work table, performing computer work, designing and laying out signs, applying decals, and cleaning substrate. While working from a ladder or manlift, or driving. Crouching/Kneeling/Squatting S Potentially while working on tasks, or gathering supplies and materials, at or below waist level. Potentially while working on large signs/banners on the ground. On most occasions the worker can alternate kneeling with bending or squatting based on preference. Reaching (up to shoulder height) Reaching (above shoulder height) F S Work surfaces/tables are approx. 40 from the ground, which allows drawing/design work and sign construction to be completed at approx. waist level. Reaching may be needed to clean substrate, pick up supplies/tools on the work table, apply and squeegee decals to substrate, apply decals on and remove decals from vehicles, install signs (from ground, ladder, or manlift), paint surfaces, and work on signs placed on the ground. Reaching also while working at a computer, retrieving printouts, gathering supplies and materials, and potentially if silk screening signs. While working at a computer, pulling rolls of vinyl from storage racks, applying decals on and removing decals from vehicles, installing signs (from ground, ladder, or manlift), and gathering supplies and materials stored at above shoulder height. Driving S While driving work truck or other vehicle to installation site, or moving vehicle that needs to have decals applied or removed.
