4 MTR Project Division - Materials Testing Laboratory 1. Established since 1975 (MIS) 2. Scope: Quality Assurance, Testing & Certification of Concrete & Steel & other Materials Construction completed (Concrete tunnel, building, depot) Project Lab (Safeguard & Quality Assurance) 3. Headcount: 150 (maximum at 1990s) vs 15 (now) equivalent to 70 (External Lab) Why so slim?? Public usage (Public safety and comfort) How to use existing resources to serve the new 5 lines projects? Develop a computer Material management system (MTS) & automation of testing process to provide high efficiency services (PS: MTS developed by Project Lab and MTR ITSD and launched in 2009) Page 4

15 Implementation Update Since 2009 Number of Test YTD Complete 738,000 nos. concrete cube and 152,000 nos. rebar for 70 MTR contracts, daily average 700 nos cube and 100 nos rebar Equivalent to 1 million m 3 concrete & 2.3 million ton steel Much more than the original forecast Why? In additional to BD s compliance test, additional test requested by Construction team for quality control and speeding up the construction cycle (PS: Foster fast-track construction program with reference to early strength cube for advance demoulding) Page 15
