Transit times will 16 and 17 days respectively. This new service is up to 60 per cent cheaper than airfreight and up to 50 per cent faster than sea freight. Operations are both simple and highly flexible. We can arrange pre-carriages in China and door deliveries at the other end, including crossborder services. In addition GPS devices are available for protecting high-value goods as well as online cargo tracking and tracing. Strict neutrality is guaranteed. Now SACO Shipping has added two more destinations to its schedule: El Paso in the far West located at the borders with New Mexico and Mexico and Laredo in the South at the Mexican border. As the bi-weekly shipments leave from Bremerhaven, you can deliver your cargo either in (PCH) or (PCG). Transfers from Houston to El Paso will be by train and by truck to Laredo. Estimated transit times will be 22 and 24 days respectively. As for Houston and Dallas on-carriages can also easily be arranged for El Paso and Laredo. 3

The teams consisted of an operational dog handler and a dog, either a German shepherd or a Labrador with various training levels. Their task was to detect various drugs carefully hidden by the coordinating instructor in PCH s warehouse measuring approximately 280,000 square feet. The well-trained noses sniffed all hiding-places. Drug detection dog training usually spans over 13 weeks. Dual training to also qualify as protection dog takes 18 weeks spread out over a period of 18 months. The bond between a dog handler and his dog has no end; they also stay together when the handler retires. 4

Export companies not willing to undergo the complex listing procedures are obliged to have their cargoes checked prior to loading. However, if there is a dark alert or a shipment does not fit the X-Ray because of its size or weight it has to be unpacked, searched by hand and packed again. These four-legged experts only need three small holes in the packing to sniff explosives. Knut Sander, the multimodal platform s CEO and Markus Nölke, its Managing Director, welcomed some 80 participants of Northern German forwarding, logistics, port and shipping companies. Shortsea traffic not only is an interesting and environment-friendly alternative to truck transports, it also offers benefits for groupage services. From its start as neutral NVOCC in 1988 SACO Shipping takes advantage of shortsea traffic on behalf of its customers. In an interview with Eckhard-Herbert Arndt, deputy editor-in-chief of Täglicher Hafenbericht (THB), Andrea Briks, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of SACO Shipping, discussed milestones of SACO s continuing growth. In addition to its offices in, and Duisburg SACO also operates branches in Switzerland (Basle), Slovakia (Bratislava), Hungary (Budapest), Czechia (Prague), Austria (Vienna) and as of recently in Northern Italy. Having started with just a handful of staff 27 years ago the group now employs some 300 people. Hans-Jörg Brunsen, General Manager Import, and Dirk Wolter, General Manager Short Sea / Transshipment discussed particular aspects of Shortsea LCL transports in their presentations. One of their key messages was that for LCL shipments shortsea offers a distinct alternative to trucks due to variety of benefits. These include costs, predictability of transports, no toll charges and the ever more important aspect of improving the carbon footprint. Over the last few years SACO has continually extended its network of destinations. To achieve both market coverage as well as transport frequency SACO co-operates with a huge number of shipping lines. Hans-Jörg Brunsen explains: Today we operate 180 direct export services and 85 direct import services per week. This is a key concern for SACO. 7 Introducing Eckart Rauter The title on his business card is a job description in short: Operation Manager FCL Department, Project + Break Bulk Shipments. I m a logistician through and through, says Eckart Rauter. I enjoy being daily challenged with various kinds of cargo, I like communicating with others and to get things done. He has always worked in logistics, has moved tons of goods via vessels, trucks and rail and at the same time established and managed branch offices for some companies. When Eckart Rauter joined SACO Shipping just over nine years ago he was the first employee of the newly formed FCL department. Up to this point in time FCL shipments were handled by LCL colleagues but as the demand grew steadily SACO decided to widen its range of services. Every day is different At SACO there is no such thing as a typical working day, says Eckart Rauter. We don t know what will happen during the day. Work left over from the day before accounts for 30 percent at most. Everything else is new which is what makes our jobs and working in this department so exciting. Only one customer per container FCL is a product in its own right, states Eckart Rauter. There is a significant difference between FCL and LCL operations as we only have one customer per container unlike LCL where there are various. Our customers either order a container to load it themselves or they want us to pick up the cargo, load the container in our warehouse and then deliver it to the sea terminal for shipment. Which line a container is shipped with depends on many factors. For each and every harbour there is a carrier offering distinct advantages. Priorities are, however, the vessels provide ample space and their transit times are short. For him there is no it won t work Eckart Rauter is specialised in cargo that won t fit into standard containers because it is out of gauge be it too long, too wide or too high. Choices are then either Flats or OTs. There are items of freight, however, that are unsuitable for containers and can only be shipped with RoRo- or Break Bulk-vessels. In cases like these finding the best solution requires in-depth expertise regarding cargo, vessel specifications and handling operations from start to finish. When it comes to Break Bulk each shipment has to be calculated separately. To be able to do this you need experience and a network of tried and trusted partners around the world. In particular when customers ask for arranging preand on-carriages. This is when customers benefit from Eckart Rauter s long-time multimodal expertise and his ambition: For him there is no it won t work. 7
