Lesson Title/Topic: QR Code Kitchen Utensils Scavenger Hunt Lesson/Goals Objectives: The student will be able to use IPads, IPods, and Smartphones to scan QR codes to locate the items in the school s kitchen before we begin the cooking/baking unit. Curriculum Addressed: Students will be able to identify specific kitchen utensils and equipment from the QR code clues and then locate the items in the school s kitchen. Technology Addressed: Manipulation of QR Codes and scanner, IPad, IPod, or Smartphone and navigation of the Internet ISTE NETS 6.a: Understand and use technology systems ISTE NETS 6.c: Troubleshoot systems and applications ISTE NETS 6.d: Transfer current Knowledge to learning on new technologies (applicable to the lesson extension) Technology Required: IPad, IPod or Smartphone QR Code scanner app Camera app Internet Goo.gl (Lesson Extension)

2 2 Other Materials Resources: School s kitchen Sheet with QR Codes for scavenger hunt Pencil Student Prerequisites: The students will need to know how to manipulate their devices and how to scan a QR code, which is then linked to a website. Students should also know how to take pictures with their electronic devices. They also need to know how to search the Internet for an article. Students also need to know how to submit homework via the Dropbox feature in Sycamore. Lesson Starter: QR Codes are everywhere in today s society, but what do they do? How are they used and what can then tell us? We will use the QR codes to identify and locate items in the kitchen so that we know where items are kept before we begin cooking and baking. Student Focused Activities: 1) Students will work in pairs to complete the scavenger hunt. 2) Give each student a copy of the QR code handout. 3) Each pair needs an IPad, IPod or Smartphone with a QR Code scanner downloaded app store. 4) Scan the start code to link you to your directions. 5) Scan each code, #1-20. a. For each code scanned, you will be taken to a clue. b. Use the clue to identify the kitchen item described and then locate the item in the kitchen. c. Once the item is found, take a picture of it. d. Repeat for all QR codes

3 3 6) Once finished, return to the teacher to check answers (each is worth 5 points) and receive a score. 7) Using the Internet, locate an article about kitchen safety or the importance of good kitchen management. 8) Once the article is found, create a QR code and answer the following questions. a. Using goo.gl to create a QR code, take the URL address from the article you found and copy and paste it into the box goo.gl (You may need to log into your google/gmail account to make this work correctly) b. Click on Shorten URL i. After URL is shortened, click on Details c. Copy and paste the QR code created into a word processing program or into the dropbox via

4 4 d. Answer the following questions before submitting the code: i. According to the article, why is it important to keep a kitchen safe? ii. What are two new things you learned from the article you found? iii.have you done much cooking before this class? Optional Extension Activities: Create your own QR code scavenger hunt of the school kitchen. Select 10 kitchen items, 8 of which were not already used in this activity Create clues Create free account on Watch introduction to building your website Create a page for each clue Using goo.gl create a QR code by copy and pasting the long URL into goo.gl Click details next to the shortened URL to view your QR Code. Copy and paste the QR Code into a word document to be printed out later Student Assessment Evaluation: Students will be graded first on the amount of correct answers to the scavenger hunt. (100points) Students will then be graded on the article, questions and QR code creation portion of the assignment. (50 points)

5 5 How and why do the particular technologies used in this lesson fit the content goals? Students will apply their current knowledge they may have of QR codes and how they are used in today s society. If QR codes are new to the student, it will make them more aware of them and how they work. Students will also learn how to make their own QR codes to link to a website. It is important for students to know how these codes work, so they can scan them in their everyday lives and learn more about what the code is linked to. How and why do the particular technologies used in this less fit the instructional strategies? The students will use the technologies in order to learn where items are located in the kitchen. In the past I have told and shown them where things are and I still get many questions as to where things are. By having the students use the QR code scavenger hunt and find things on their own in the kitchen, they are more likely to remember where items are located, thus making them more independent in the kitchen. Another application for this lesson would be to have the students use this scavenger hunt at home, however, depending on the family they may not have all of the items in their home kitchens. Teaching the students how to be independent and basic home skills is a goal of Family and Consumer Sciences, because many students do not receive these basic skills at home.
